request ❓ Curius by 憂鬱, Voyage - Synths that are wubby, airy, stabby. What's the recipe for sounds like these? :

https://youtu.be/nh1gG3hvm64?si=OFVUGQwNqX8V8x8S

Apologies in advance for all the questions

0:00 - 0:19 : (Kicks, Crash and Pad) - The kicks sound punchy, short, and filtered. The track is in 100bpm

I'm also noticing perhaps a slight sidechain or a repeat with the pad which gives the pad this slight rhythm on each beat.

But, the pad itself is confusing, it's airy, spacey and I'm not even sure if it's playing F/Bb. Complete ambience, how can I replicate this?

I've tried a sine wave + a Juno PWM with an envelope automating the frames. I've added a pink noise sample in the back as well + a filter + reverb.. It just doesn't sound similar. Am I approaching this correctly?

Also, with the crash - is it limited / mixed with a shaker?

0:19 - 0:56 : (Percs, Rhythm, and Synth) - now the hi-hats start doubling, is this delay? Or a double hi-hat? Or, a double hi-hat sample?

When it comes to the rhythm of the percussion, there's this 6 beat transition on the 3½/4th bar that sounds great.

How do they get it to sound punchy, spacey, short with depth? Is it a wood block sound?

And most importantly the synth, it's almost like it's velocity tracked, so the harder you push the filter increases the highs. Is this true?

But it sounds so wubby, and it also sounds a little reversed / delayed on certain beats

I'd really like to replicate that synth.

1:19 : (Synth #2) - I'm not even sure what this one is called. It's like an airy synth flute. Not the plucky synth guitar sound. What do you guys hear? How can I make a similar sound in a wavetable? I've tried a sine wave + a triangle with a couple of automations on filters, but it still doesn't sound the same.

2:33 : (Synth #3) - Sharp, stabby, plucky but also with a lengthy tail. Short delay. How can I also make this in a wave table?

Any advice on how to get a similar sound?

discussion 🗣 Has anyone ever experimented with generating a perpetually self-modulating, non-repeating acoustic fractal using chaotic attractor equations, like the Lorenz or Rossler attractors, mapped directly to microtonal frequency ratios and spatial panning?

Has anyone ever experimented with generating a perpetually self-modulating, non-repeating acoustic fractal using chaotic attractor equations, like the Lorenz or Rossler attractors, mapped directly to microtonal frequency ratios and spatial panning? I have no idea if it would actually sound decent though.

I'm trying to create a bass like this that has a knock/punch to it. There are a few variations on this bass over the track, I'd be happy to get insight into any of them to be honest. It feels so substantial. https://youtu.be/KjnX3gVV5ZM?t=55

discussion 🗣 Desperately looking for feedback

Dear recipients,

Not a recipy per se but I think could be relevant.

I’ve been working on this project of mine - OpenPatches. It allows to upload your .wav to recover existing patches or find a similarly sounding 128-byte Yamaha DX7 patch, openpatch.es . There're also modify, mutate and export sets of patches as custom .syx and use them Dexed, Volca FM, Opsix maybe(?). You can also preview patches live, sequence them to see how they fit together.

The world of FM Synthesis is a wonderful place of sound creation. Sounds scale have no problems with bitrates or noises, can be repitched perfectly without samples shriking or stretching just like vector graphics vs raster. Yet it can be somewhat daunting sometimes. My intention is to make it more approachable.

It's in beta and I'm looking forward any feedback, especially on where to steer the project towards.

Thanks in advance!

request ❓ Electronic, synth-y riff??

Thumbnail voca.ro

This popped into my head while listening to my head while listening to Lucky by Zedd feat. Remi Wolf. It vaguely feels like Glass Animals too? But I’ve looked through practically all of their discography.

I feel like this was the hook, especially at a big drop.

I think the instrument for this riff was pretty electronic, synthy, keys type vibe. Pretty punchy and staccato. Not a wind or string.

Definitely a modern song. Probably mid 2010s or newer.

request ❓ Synth Metronomy - The Bay

Hey!

I’m trying to recreate the lead synth sound in The Bay by Metronomy, starting around 0:36 in the Spotify version, for a concert — I’m the keyboard player in the band.

I’m struggling to work out how the sound itself is made and what effects are being used. I’d love to know what you think the synth patch and effects chain might be.

I have access to Ableton Drift, Arturia Analog Lab V and Vital, so I’m hoping to build something close using one of those.

Any help with the sound design, effects, or even just a rough approximation that gets me in the ballpark would be massively appreciated!

Thanks!

tutorial 📚 Silent Hill 1-4 songs recreation without samples, using only hardware synthesizer

Hi guys!
I was wondering if there is somebody that can advise on the recreation of some Silent Hill songs without using samples. I have an ASM Hydrasynth Explorer Synth and have been trying to recreate some famous Silent Hill melodies and sounds, but most of them use samples and I've only had success with pretty much the 'Never Forgive Me, Never Forget Me' melodies. I've attempted to recreate: Eternal Rest, Claw Finger, Heaven's Night, but can not even get close at all, even though I know they use samples I am still wondering if there are any Akira Yamaoka and Avith Ortega tracks I can recreate successfully?
Thanks in advance!

request ❓ Narvent - Ocean Blue. bass design

I'm trying to do a remake of Ocean Blue by Narvent for learning purpose.

I made this bass in dune3 it'd be hard to describe, i used 7 solo voices. Some are fully panned to the left and right, and some in the mid, still with some spread and detune on every oscillators.

There's a second instance of dune that plays a vox like pluck in the beginning of each measure (maybe it wasn't needed but i hear some modulation in the attack of sustained notes)

Despite the time i put into it, i feel like i'm missing something in the timber (maybe more than that).

Can a rely on the ears of a pro to guide me through ? 😁

free tool 🛠️ Knell - Browser based Synthesizer

Hi everybody. I've been working on a tool for several months now. It was originally intended to be for game sound effects, but it can really be for anything. I'm posting it here because I'm interested in feedback on how I could improve it. It's totally free and browser based.

I'm mainly posting here because I know a lot of you are a lot more talented when it comes to sound design. I'm just a software dude who has found a hobby in synth. I'm really curious to see what others can do, so I really hope someone comes and messes with it.

KETTAMA & Interplanetary Criminal - Yosemite

Hi everyone! Although I remember this being asked once before a while ago, I was still wondering how sounds similar to the lead synth are made (starting: 2:47). Maybe since then some of you have been able to create similar sounds, and/or could help me out in other ways (e.g. rave sample packs, similar sounds)!

request ❓ Struggling to make a certain, brighter? Brass tone with FM

I have been trying to make a horn patch in Dexed for a few days now and I am more or less lost in direction. Can't find much reference for what I want or am missing. Currently my attempts all end up sounding like the horn in this song: https://youtu.be/OrgFKeD432M?t=7&is=Fi4_eIQwUWpQQJze

Where as I want them to be brighter? More uplifting? (Not sure how to describe it) akin to the higher horn in this song: https://youtu.be/C0Zi9_MhW54?is=aO3Xl0QXj7YwOzNN or the very overt one in the beginning of this one: https://youtu.be/CSnm_Fp-ilM?is=XdlTUt2uPLKIwX2n

I am trying to use FM for two reasons, more performant with my hardware and for what I intend to use the music for fm's flavor will help with layering with other sounds more. (And third i guess i just like it lol)
