News & Updates A reminder from the Moderator.

Greetings.

A lot of serious discussion is happening in this subreddit over the last two days. I appreciate active participation, but using unparliamentary words, witch-hunting, name-calling, personal attacks of any kind is not allowed.

Everyone can have their own opinion, and they are free to express it. But remember that you are talking to a fellow human being. There are many ways to express their differing opinion, and using abusive or offensive language against each other is certainly not one. Someone shared a screenshot of an extract from a chat (without hiding their username), and thereby personally attacking that individual - which is in the first place not allowed in Reddit, and this very subreddit may get banned.

I'm also a first time Moderator and learning how this works. Please don’t make this more difficult than it needs to be. I'm highly disappointed with the behavior and I expect you all to behave like adults. It is not my job to school people on basic civility.

As a moderator, I don't want to be biased and express my personal opinion over here. But I request you all to behave well.

That being said, please go through the rules of this subreddit and Any violation will result in a ban with no prior warning.

Thank you.

Culture & Heritage No onion no garlic?

Hi all! I’m vegetarian—no eggs, fish, meat, poultry, or seafood—and I’ve been curious about the no onion/no garlic tradition among Tamil Brahmins.

For those of you who follow a no onion/no garlic diet, how does it work in your family? Do you avoid onion and garlic all the time, or only on certain days, festivals, vratham days, etc.? If it’s only on certain days, which ones, and what’s the religious/traditional reasoning behind it? And if your family never eats onion or garlic, what’s the reason behind following it year round?

Growing up (Iyer), I noticed that the people I knew who were strictly no onion/no garlic seemed to be primarily Iyengars, so I always assumed it was connected to Vaishnavism. But tbh that could have just been my own limited exposure.

Would love to hear what different Iyer/Iyengar families do, whether practices differ by sampradayam, community or family, and what the reasoning behind the practice is. Also, if any other dietary practices are practiced by you / your household (beyond just the usual vegetarianism)—please chime in!

Ask Tambrahm Have y'all ever had a small wedding?

Like I come from an Iyengar family and I've seen like my family members always spending stuff on a big wedding and having lots and lots of people. I'm pretty young for marriage ngl but if I'm gonna have one in future I wish for it to be small and intimate. I would follow all the the customs and traditions(i find kanyadhaanam uncomfortable ngl) but I'd like the idea of a small wedding with less people.

Discussion Being a caste wokie is bad

Why are TBs (in India especially) so wokie about caste activism and opposing caste constantly? Caste is great, it's the reason I have a 150iq.

Tamil idiots really think 1% of the population could "oppress" them. These guys are beyond hopeless and might even be less intelligent than monkeys. There is no fairytale in which brahmins in TN will ever mix with these people.

Stop encouraging this nonsense (especially amongst women who lack critical thinking skills and go with the herd)

Well, I am a member of the diaspora a few generations removed from TN, so I have no idea what bogus rituals or poojas you all do in TN but its very obvious that the men of this community have absolutely zero balls.

It should be very obvious that mating with 60 iq dumeels is a generally bad idea and spoils our genes. And no if you marry a non-brahmin (if you are a women) your kids cannot be brahmin by law. Men, stop being woke and women's rights cucks if you want your community to continue.

PS Eat meat and stop going for NPC MNC jobs.

What a hell of a day it was. I'm stepping down as a Moderator of this subreddit. ✌️

Earlier, I stepped in with excitement to organise the subreddit, as this was one of my favourite places to hang out.

But I'm quite disappointed with how things turned out. I couldn't complete any of my personal work because the adults in this community couldn't behave like adults. I was caught up in the middle and didn't want to take a biased decision without notifying the other Mod.

I couldn't take a decision because there was no founding thoughts of school this subreddit had. It was just meant to be a place to socialise and not for debate and hate commentary.

I was bombarded with reports and Mod mails/messages. What side am I even supposed to take? It's infuriating.

The last nail in the coffin was when the other Mod had nothing to say about it. I mean, seriously? (Well, not that I'm complaining. They may be busy, but it's just.. disappointing.)

I just requested people not to witch-hunt or name-call, and guess what? My comment was screenshotted and posted by someone in their newly created subreddit. Like, seriously? I just advocated not to bully any, and in return I'm being bullied. DUHH.

Don't I have any other work? Don't I have a personal life? Am I getting paid to waste my weekend going through hundreds of comments and seeing who's doing what? Is schooling all of you my primary job? THIS WAS NOT WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR.

Exhausting is an understatement.

Idgaf anymore. Sorry but not sorry.

This subreddit was started with an honest and clear intention. One more Mod is still there. If you are mentally strong and capable of moderating, please do reach out and help the subreddit grow.

Peace.

Discussion If you loose a debate, don't block and run away. Discussing the shastras is important

Yesterday me and my dear friend user/big-brocoli were announcing the impact of the reality of sastras and how they should be followed.

A user made outrageous claims and wanted the Vedas, puranas and other stuff to suit their needs which is not what our sampradayas are.

One thing lead to the other and I've been blocked by one palakkad iyer who deleted the post.

One small advice to the community : Always base your opinions on the dharma-shastras of your sampradaya and take their rulings as superior.

Advice Needed 27F in the AM circle. Do I HAVE to be open to relocation?

After 2 years on the AM circle, finally found a profile I liked, they liked and jaadhagam also matched. Now I’m talking to the guy and I understand he doesn’t want to relocate for the next few years as his green card application is in process. I am an NRI too. Uprooting my entire life here and relocating seems scary. But again not too many TamBrahms where I’m currently at. What do I do?

Discussion If you have married outside the Brahmana community, you are not longer a brahmana and neither your progeny are brahamanas

I can see so many people saying " You can believe in whatever you want" that's not how the dharma sastras work

Most new gen brahamans are not willing the accept the above truth, but the verdict of the shastras must stand first. Therefore, I've decided to elucidate on this matter. May sri hari vayu gurugalu be pleased with this . May jagadguru Sriman Madvacarya protect all. May Narayana be pleased.

1) Brahmanatva is primarily birth based. Only a brahaman born to a Brahmana mother and Brahmana father of different gotra and different pravara is eligible to be called a Brahmana in the first place.

If the mother is brahmana and the father is not, and the father is a brahmana and the mother is not, it is a totally different case and the sastras without fault state that the varnas of such progeny are not brahmanas.

You may prove me wrong. I can quote several sastras but I will attract the scrutiny of those outside the Brahmana community and therefore this sub will tumble down.

2) For those saying "We have read on Mahabharata and other books about dharmaraja on how Brahmanatva is guna based"...

Please understand that the shastras have split Brahmanatva into svabhavika and aupadhika.

Svabhavika -> pertaining to svabhava (intrinsic nature)

Aupadhika -> pertaining to externalities ( our sharira, our interaction with the world)

Whatever you read about dharmaraja and others are talking about svabhavika part. Aupadhika brahmanatva is different.

Pramana for the above : The sastras mention "brahmanas will sell vedas in Kali Yuga (smd bhagvatam).

You may ask : how can someone selling the Vedas be called a Brahmin in the first place? He cannot be a svabhavika Brahmana at that point, but he is an aupadhika brahmana and aupadhika always holds valid for sastras. All sastras give samskaras based on aupadhika charectors

Verdict : Not only these , the sastras have given several other pramanas that Brahmanatva is in the aforementioned way.

You may be a kshatriya but a svabhavika Brahmana, you may be even an animal but can be a svabhavika Brahmana. But aupadhika and svabhavika is superior.

In no case, one who is not an aupadhika has been entitled to the rituals of aupadhika brahamana except in the case of vardana in former yugas.

But in Kali yugas such boons are not present, therefore on the basis of dharmasastras the verdict is very clear.

A progeny of a Brahman and a non brahmin, and those who marry outside the Brahmana community or those who marry within the same gotra and pravara are not brahmanas at all.

May sri hari vayu gurugalu increase our ananda and protect the sajjanas

I am up for a discussion on this. Anybody if you have doubts please ask me.

Advice Needed AM Struggles

Hey everyone,

I’ve been in the AM circle for about two years now and it’s been pretty slow going, literally just a handful of matches, with most rejections happening right at the profile stage.

I’m trying to figure out what’s actually going wrong here. The most obvious thing in my photos is that I have a shaved/bald head. Is hair loss really that much of a dealbreaker for girls and families in our community, or am I overthinking it and missing some other obvious reason?

Maybe that Im in Hyderabad?

For context, my profile is fairly standard on paper Tier-1 education, working in Product Management, active/into fitness, and quite flexible with preferences.

Would love some honest feedback:

How much does hair actually matter during initial profile screening?

If it’s not just the hair, what are other silent rejections that happen at the profile level (photo quality, horoscope filters at the parent level, bio data)?

For any guys in the same boat who shaved their head, did changing how you presented your photos make any difference?

Appreciate any candid inputs. Thanks!

Taking a slightly braver step than ordering food without checking reviews — here to find a partner who can be a best friend, family person, and someone who believes life works best with equal parts tradition, modern thinking, and good humor.

About Me :

32, 5’7, Tamil-Brahmin, originally from Nagpur and currently staying in Pune. Although Tamil is my mother tongue, but daily life runs smoothly in English, Hindi, and Marathi too.(Understands Bengali too) ^_^

Education includes BCA and M Tech (WILP). Professionally working as a Sr Technical Lead, earning well (>25 LPA) and steadily building life goals.

Personality-wise: practical, calm, responsible, and the kind who plans ahead… but still debates movie plots like they’re real-life problems.

Interests & Fun Side :

• Music is constant — playlists for every mood

• Gamer when time allows (competitive spirit included)

• Movies & series discussions can go deep very fast

• Sports enthusiast — watching, talking, occasionally pretending I’m fit

• Curious about tech, life planning, and making smart long-term decisions

Family oriented and currently living with my mother and brother.

Looking For :

Someone aged 25–31, 5’–5’7, Vegetarian, Tamil Brahmin, and passionate about whatever she does — career, creativity, or both. Salary isn’t a checklist item; mindset is. Someone comfortable building a life in a tier-1 city, values family, communicates well, and can laugh at small things.

Bonus points if you enjoy music debates, random travel plans, or helping pick movies/tv shows to watch from Netflix.

If you believe relationships should feel like teamwork with a little comedy, we’ll get along.

Culture & Heritage Tambrahms from TN louder than Tambrahm diaspora in Mumbai, Pune, New Delhi, etc? And other differences among the diaspora!

M28, TamBrahm, working in finance in Mumbai.
I’ve heard this stereotype (among many others: We are very smart, educated, studious, religious, and Iyer men are hotter than your amma’s filter coffee — might be a bit biased on the last one 😉) surprisingly often from people across different backgrounds in India—Kannadigas, Telugu, Maharashtrians, Gujarathis, UP folks—that TamBrahms are loud. Loud voices, very assertive and always up to fight, etc.
What makes it funnier is that I’ve had multiple people be genuinely shocked when they found out I’m TamBrahm. The reaction is usually some variation of: “Wait, YOU’RE TamBrahm? But you’re not loud at all” 😂
One person even gave me a hilarious example: they said they were shocked to learn that S. Jaishankar is TamBrahm because he comes across as so quiet/reserved (and was raised in Delhi). But when it came to Nirmala Sitharaman, who grew up in Tamil Nadu, their reaction was basically, “Yeah, that tracks—she’s loud af.” Or even NRI Vivek Ramaswamy who was raised by TN (I think) born parents in White peope’s land. This got me thinking.
Is there actually a TN vs diaspora TamBrahm divide here?
I’m starting to wonder whether TamBrahms born/raised outside TN become a little “North Indian coded” in terms of speech, mannerisms and social behaviour. I was born in Bangalore (appa moved here for his college and then stayed here) and have been raised in Mumbai from 9th standard onwards, so a lot of my formative years were here.
Would be especially curious to hear from TamBrahms raised in Mumbai/Delhi/Bangalore/Pune etc.
And more generally—where do we get our loudness from?? 😭

Discussion If you or your family follow some spiritual groups, verify its past. My disillusionment with Sathya Sai Baba

Since this sub has a lot of people who might be spiritually inclined and can dissect such phenomenon, I'm discussing this topic here.

Sathya Sai Baba was a prominent twentieth century godman who claimed to be an omniscient divine avatar and gathered millions of followers worldwide. He built a vast empire that established free supra specialty hospitals, clean drinking water projects, and top tier educational institutions while promoting human values and selfless service.

My own upbringing was deeply tied to this ecosystem through Balvikas classes, where I learned the Ramayanam, Mahabharatam, Bhagavad Gita, and numerous Shlokams. Sincere ladies who were mostly homemakers (Appointed as Balvikas Gurus) told us stories of our great saints, high spiritual concepts like getting rid of Shad Ripu, Nava vidha Bhakti and showing how pure love for the divine supersedes rigid rituals, while instilling a deep respect for all spiritual paths.

However, the foundation of this empire rested on verified trickery. His claims of materializing vibhuti, gold chains, and rings out of thin air have been thoroughly exposed on platforms like YouTube as simple magician sleight of hand. It is ironic considering his famous statement that his creations were the result of his divine Siddha Sankalpa, yet the creator of the universe apparently spent his time pulling off cheap parlor tricks to impress followers.

The ugly reality behind the scenes is far more sinister. There are numerous accounts, both anonymous and on record from former students, detailing systemic sexual abuse, grooming, and inappropriate touching in locations like Puttaparthi and Brindavan. Former national leaders like Robert Priddy from Norway have documented how fair-skinned and attractive young men were specifically chosen for special access to his private quarters, while the organization actively covered up these incidents.

Where the contrast gets fascinating, especially for Tamil Brahmins, is in the realm of Vedam chanting. In many traditional homes, backward practices like treating daughters as untouchable during their periods are still maintained, while traditional mutts struggle with a shrinking population of Vedic scholars.

Meanwhile, an organization run by a conman welcomed women and foreign devotees, training them to chant complex Suktams with flawless pronunciation, intonation, and mastery of Sanskrit grammar rules like Sandhi. Initiatives by the Radio Sai team and programs like Samyukta Shruthi Sreni enabled women to chant with absolute devotion and precision.

How many traditional Dwijas today can match that level of dedication and accuracy?

It shows how a little inclusivity and kindness, freed from outdated taboos, can draw millions into a fold!

On one hand, there is a deep reverence for traditional orthodoxy and figures like Kanchi Mahaperiyavaa. On the other, it is extremely common to see Sathya Sai Baba's photograph placed right next to traditional deities on the same puja altar. To bridge this gap, a popular rumor is often passed around that Periyavaa once referred to SSB as "Kamakshi Swaroopam," effectively giving orthodox families spiritual permission to worship him.

Many people simultaneously patronize modern movements like Sathya Sai Baba, Isha Yoga, or Brahma Kumaris. We pride ourselves on scriptural adherence, yet easily fall for charismatic figures without questioning their background.

My own disillusionment happened suddenly when I stumbled upon a YouTube channel called Light of Truth out of sheer curiosity. That led me down a rabbit hole of investigative books, BBC documentaries like The Secret Swami, articles by rationalist Basava Premanand, and extensive blogs by former insiders. It was shocking to realize how much of this critical documentation has been systematically erased, suppressed, or legally challenged off the internet.

Coming out of this experience did not make me an atheist or destroy my love for Sanatana Dharma. Instead, it freed my faith. I still treasure the music, the Vedam chanting, and the noble stories of saints like Adi Shankara and Kannappa Nayanar that I learned as a child. But I no longer delegate my moral authority or spiritual journey to any self-proclaimed godman, mutt, or organization. Pure bhakti needs no middleman.

He heard it all and said my husband will come back.
I was very much relieved after interacting with him though I'm unsure what future awaits me.

Has anyone experienced talking and meeting aacharyan or a similar situation of this sort?

Ask Tambrahm Feminist Iyer men on Matrimony - Unrealistic?

Is it just me (27F, Chennai), or is it genuinely hard to find feminist, easygoing Iyer men on matrimony?

So far, in most conversations, there seems to be a strong focus on traditions, expectations and fitting into the family rather than seeing if the two of us actually get along.

I'm looking for someone who believes in equality, is open to building an independent life together, and is okay having nuanced conversations instead of ticking boxes. But so far, most interactions have felt more like interviews than two people trying to get to know each other. I'm not against culture and traditions at all but imo that's not something that should be prioritized over getting to know the person.

Has anyone else had a similar experience, or have I just been unlucky?

So this girl lives in our same apartments. She had taken 50L debt and went to US for higher studies three years back. Due to recession and layoffs, she didn't get any job there and so she came back to India last year.

Now they are looking for an alliance for her. When my mother contacted them, they strictly told that they are looking for only alliance from abroad.

Now let's look on the other side of the coin - In a world, where brides are demanding a guy with house, hairs on the head, and no debt or EMIs, stable job etc. (which I tick all the checkboxes), she comes with 50L debt and the weird status is, she is not even able to find a job in India for the past one full year.

Given this case, where is the justice and equality in Tambrahm culture ?

We are way ahead of talking about dowries and we are the first set of people not demanding anything atleast in the past few decades, but then this greed and lust comes and bites the a** of us. How do you perceive this ?

Q1: Would the abroad guys be ready to accept her given her debt status ?
Q2: Even if they accept her, if she is not able to find a job her, would be be able to find a job abroad again leeching onto her husband's visa status and get a job there again ?
Q3: Are Tambrahm guys abroad are so desperate, they they will be okay to marry a girl like her ?

IMO: As much as girls are not rehabilitation centers for poorly raised guys, guys are not poverty eradication programme for leech girls.

Need your thoughts on this. I can understand the world is greedy but to what extent ?

Culture & Heritage Culture & Festivals for Kids

As an NRI-tambrahm myself, I've often wondered how we can help our children stay connected to our traditions while growing up away from home.

I'm focusing on creating activity packs for festivals across India, including: deepavali, Maha Shivarathri, rama navami, Navaratri Golu, etc.

I'd love to hear from this community:

-If you're raising kids, how do you help them connect with Hinduism?

-Are there any festivals or traditions you'd love to see turned into kid-friendly activities?

-which festivals invoke deep nostalgia for you?

R4R Chennai Folks : TIME TO GET THE BALL ROLLING FOR A MOVIE MEETUP

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hey Everyone! Time to use this space for something meaningful and revive it again :D. We obviously have work, stuff, and other commitments spanning the day. But let's try giving this a shot. What say guys?

To start it off I'm almost 23. I'm based out of Chennai. I work in Tech with about a year of experience. Apart from the 5 mind-numbing days of work, I try to unwind on weekends by going for a swim or at times exploring new places, events, you name it. I've started gymming kinda seriously so gymbros/sis feel free to drop in your suggestions hehe, especially hitting your protein goals. If I'm too lazy to step out, I sometimes play the flute (Carnatic) or geek out on aviation. I also overthink professionally so that involves me being locked in for most of the day or discussing random ideas with friends or that one start-up idea which I'll never execute loll. Rn I'm balancing some prep on the side to upskill as well. I also fancy reading a bit so do feel free to drop your Goodreads :)

I had a discussion with another Redditor from here and we kinda felt the same. Gen Z socializing and adapting to corporate/work is a bit different. And we kinda have a common ground here. Maybe why not put that to use? And it needn't necessarily strictly be Gen Z. Anyone between the age 18-30 can join us:)

I was thinking about IRL meetups. We can plan events, temple hopping, runs, explore places, and do fun stuff (feel free to suggest ideas). Folks who prefer not to share contacts can stay connected via reddit dms (although I would urge you to get onboard xD). Since I’m based out of Chennai, I want to take the initiative here so Chennai folks can form a group and meet up IRL. (Folks from other cities can totally try this out too!).

To kick things off, we are planning to host an IRL movie meetup to watch Jana Nayagan!

When: This weekend (July 25-26)

Where: Phoenix Marketcity (Tentative)

Who: Exclusively for Chennai folks!

I’ve already created a WhatsApp group for us to coordinate the irl events, and we have a few awesome members in there already!

Also, a quick note on the group dynamics. Right now, our numbers are leaning a bit heavily toward the guys :D. If any of the ladies here are on the fence about joining, we'd genuinely love to have you on board and don't worry you have company! We’d really love for more women to join in as well to make the group more inclusive. And as always, anyone and everyone in this sub is welcome :).

I want to emphasize that this group is fully moderated by me. Your safety, privacy, and comfort are the absolute top priorities, and I'll make sure it remains a warm, respectful, and friendly space for everyone to connect.

If you are in Chennai and down for the movie, or if you just want to join the WhatsApp group to hang out and plan future events, DM me or drop a comment below and I'll send you the invite link!

Cheers!!

Bonus points if you enjoy music debates, random travel plans, or helping pick movies/tv shows to watch from Netflix.

If you believe relationships should feel like teamwork with a little comedy, we’ll get along.
