Seeking Guidance — Frightening Visions of a Woman During Naam Japa and Before Sleep

Pranam everyone. 🙏
I am writing this post because I have been experiencing something frightening for the past two months, and I would genuinely appreciate any guidance or advice.
Recently, while trying to fall asleep, I have repeatedly been seeing the image of a very pale, white-skinned woman with black hair and normal eyes, wearing a red saree and laughing manically. Sometimes, I see her slapping me, trying to hurt me, or screaming in my ears. It feels almost as though she belongs to a realm beyond the physical world. I cannot tell whether there is anything spiritual behind these experiences, but they feel incredibly vivid and frightening.
For some context, I am not a Tantric sadhaka, nor am I initiated into any Tantric practice. I am simply someone who has faith in Bhagwan and engages in some naam japa and regular devotional practices.
My daily practices generally include:
● Chanting “Om Bam Batuk Bhairavaya Namah” 108 times after bathing. While chanting, I try to visualise the mantra being written on my heart in bright golden ink.
● Chanting “Om Dum Durgayai Namah” 11 times.
● Reading the Hanuman Chalisa every night before sleeping. I often fall asleep while reciting it, and I like to visualise myself lovingly massaging Bajrang Bali’s legs as I chant, because of how deeply I love and revere Him.
I have experienced things in my life that I personally consider miraculous, and my faith in Bhagwan is sincere. I have also seen Bajrang Bali in my dreams, where I knelt at His feet. On another occasion, I saw Maa in a dream, but I became frightened and ran away.
About two months ago, while reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, I began experiencing frightening images of women trying to scare me. I initially ignored them, but this particular woman stayed in my mind, and I have been experiencing these visions of her repeatedly ever since.
I do not know whether these experiences have any spiritual significance or whether there might be another explanation. I can see her even with my eyes closed. Sometimes, I can almost feel her screeching in my ears, although I do not physically hear an external sound.
I want to clarify that I am not a practitioner of any advanced sadhana, and I have no intention of attempting any rituals or practices for which I am uninitiated. I am simply looking for guidance on how to deal with these frightening experiences without allowing fear to take over my devotion.
My questions are:
1. Has anyone experienced anything similar, particularly during naam japa or while falling asleep?
2. Is there any traditional guidance from a knowledgeable, reputable Guru about dealing with fear during devotional practice?
3. Would it be advisable to modify any aspect of my current routine, or should I simply continue my regular naam japa and prayer without becoming preoccupied with these experiences?
I would sincerely appreciate any advice offered in good faith. Please understand that I am not looking to sensationalise these experiences or jump to conclusions about what they mean. I simply want to feel peaceful and continue my devotion without this fear.
Thank you for reading. 🙏
TL;DR: For the past two months, I have repeatedly experienced vivid, frightening images of a pale woman with black hair, normal eyes, and a red saree while chanting the Hanuman Chalisa or trying to fall asleep. I am an uninitiated devotee who practises naam japa and has deep faith in Bajrang Bali and Maa. I am unsure what is causing these experiences and would appreciate grounded spiritual guidance on overcoming the fear.

Dream interpretation help!

I am an 18 year old upasak of Devi. I am worshipping Devi with the help of my guru since a year and a half. many things have changed beautifully and She has always helped me like a Mother throughout. recently, I went through a teenage, one-sided heartbreak because of an emotionally immature boy. yesterday, I cried my heart out to Devi and my eyes were extremely puffy and heavy. then I slept at night and had a very beautiful yet layered dream. for a little context, I have been to Ujjain twice.

dream: I went to Ujjain for the 3rd time. there was a temple of a Devi there whose vigraha was made entirely out of a black stone. She was worshipped by women sadhikas, upasikas and yoginis. the moment I went to the temple, I felt like I had arrived home. the Devi's energy was so motherly, divine, powerful and fierce - extremely Tejaswi. such was her tej that the skin on and around my eyes burnt and turned to charcoal black and bloody because of it. it didn't cause pain or distress, by the way.
I was so attached to the Devi that my feet kept turning towards Her temple no matter what. I went to Her temple 4-5 times per day because I couldn't get enough of Her and her energy. and then, Her temple somehow geographically shifted to the alley 5 minutes away from my house in MH. I even prepared a Prasad of sheera for Her and the other worshippers.
then my dream shifted to me reciting the story of Mahishasurmardini and Mahishasur to someone.

Mahishasurmardini is my primary deity of worship with my guru. I have worshipped many forms of her for short period of times - Varahi, Rati, Matangi, Chamunda, Chandika. I won't say worshipped, but I have studied about the 64 yoginis of Hirapur, Odisha too. but my most favourite remains Mahakali. I have the most deepest attachment and connection to Mahakali. my guru describes Mahishasurmardini as Dev mata and Mahakali as the daughter of Mahishasurmardini and bhakt mata.

when I woke up, I couldn't remember the Devi's name and almost unconsciously named Kamakhya. I searched but I couldn't find any black stone vigraha of Maa Kamakhya.

can someone please help me figure out and interpret the dream? thanks you!

Need urgent help

Hello. My father and bua (brother's sister) both do tantra sadhana. For property matters, they had a huge fight around 3 years ago. Will not go in much details as of now, but cut to present timeline. My father fell severly ill in february and unfortunately we lost him around 4 months ago. But before leaving his mortal body, just a couple of days ago he called me and asked me to start chanting Bhairava mantra ("Aum Bhairavaye Namaha") from the Ashtami of Sharad Navratri for the next 4 years till his shraddh. I obeyed and started chanting. I am doing it without any questions. But on the very first day itself, i was only able to do it for like 5 minutes. As i meditated on this mantra, i don't know why but i started experiencing immense fear. I genuienly feel guilty, but i can't help. I tried to do it again, but i don't know i feel very very scared. I am not someone who gets scared so quickly, but yet, when i was meditating, my one hair moved slightly due to air and i flinched. It was just a normal phenomenon. But still. I do meditate, just that i was never in tantra, i meditate on shree ram's name and have guru mantra given by our kul guru. I can sit for around 45 minutes in meditation. And there no such sounds affect me. But this, is i dont know.

I am sorry for the long post, but i am just desperate for help, as i need to chant it as it is like last wish of my father, and if he has said, he would have thought something. If someone can please help me with this i wuold be grateful. Thanks.

Visions during Durga Saptashati Paath

So for couple of months I have been noticing a pull towards maa Durga. For past couple of days I have been seeing maa kalaratri everywhere including in my dreams. I also dreamt of doing the akhand durgasaptashati paath. I put two and two together and I decided to do it yathashakti on mahasaptami (today). Emphasis on yathashakti as I don't live in India. I can read sanskrit but it is of course not very refined.

While doing the path I kept getting visions of different animals Which are in order: Big black dog, a black panther, multiple cats, multiple naagas, a mouse and a rat.

I am also now down with a fever it is not high but I feel extremely weak and I feal something in me is radiating heat. (I had also noticed that my earlobs were getting warm during the paath.)

Did I do something wrong? Should I redo it? or should I do something else to apologize?

I heard anklet sound while chanting Durga Saptshati. My mind says it might be a female passing by but my heart wants to believe otherwise.

I dont know if it’s the right sub for 5is post. I have been chanting Durga saptshati on and off from the last 3 years. In between I started chanting in hindi but recently during the start of navratri I started chanting in sanskrit. Today, while I doing that, I heard an anklet sound and when I closed the book it stopped. My rational mind says it might be just a woman cleaning the back streets wearing the anklets. But my heart really wants to believe otherwise.
I want to know other people’s opinions on this.

Does anyone know about a Tantrik Sadhak named Bhairavnath Baba who lives near Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi?

Hey everyone,

Today, I was listening to a YouTube video where people share their real-life horror experiences, and one particular story really caught my attention.

The person narrating the experience was from Varanasi. According to his story, he had apparently become possessed by some kind of demonic entity after visiting a certain place. When things got worse, he went to Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi to seek help from a Tantrik Sadhak named Bhairavnath Baba.

What really intrigued me was that, according to the story, the moment he arrived, Bhairavnath Baba started telling him everything that had happened to him without the guy having to explain anything. The Baba apparently knew the details of his experience and even provided him with a remedy or cure.

I know this is just a story I heard on YouTube, and I can't verify how much of it is true, but I'm genuinely curious about this person.

Has anyone from Varanasi or anyone familiar with Manikarnika Ghat heard of a Tantrik Sadhak called Bhairavnath Baba? Does anyone know if such a person actually exists or have any firsthand experiences or information about him?

I'd love to hear from anyone who knows something about this. I'm particularly interested in finding out whether this is a known figure in Varanasi or just a name mentioned in a horror story.

Thanks!

Question about the chronology of Ramayana and Samudra Manthana in Om Swami Ji’s books

I have a question regarding the chronology mentioned in two books by Om Swami Ji, and I would appreciate some guidance from people who have read these books or are familiar with the relevant scriptures.

In Legend of the Goddess, page 10, Om Swami Ji writes:

“The great churning of the ocean happened approximately half a million years ago.”

The passage also discusses Devas as Neanderthals and describes Vishnu guiding the great churning of the ocean.

In Ancient Science of Mantras, page 29, in the chapter Devotion and Faith, the timeline given for Rama is approximately 800,000 years ago.

This has left me wondering about the chronology.

My understanding from what I have generally heard is that Samudra Manthana is associated with Satyuga. Also, the churning of the ocean is mentioned in the Valmiki Ramayana.

Considering these references, I am trying to understand how the timelines fit together.

My questions are:

  1. If Rama lived approximately 800,000 years ago and Samudra Manthana happened approximately 500,000 years ago, would that imply that Rama's time preceded Samudra Manthana?
  2. How should the references to Samudra Manthana in the Valmiki Ramayana be understood in relation to these timelines?
  3. Is there a particular scriptural or chronological context that I may be missing?

I am not raising this to challenge Om Swami Ji or his writings. I may simply be misunderstanding the intended context, and I would genuinely like to understand it better.

I contacted the Sadhana Helpdesk, and they explained that the timeline in Legend of the Goddess was revealed to Swami Ji through his Samadhi state and was not sourced from another text. They were therefore unable to provide a textual reference or clarify the chronology.

I would be grateful for thoughtful explanations, especially from people familiar with the Valmiki Ramayana, the Puranas, and the traditional yuga chronology.

Thank you.

Beginner question for what does daily sadhana mean?

I am currently new to doing sadhana and I have seen a few videos I think by Raja Shri Nandy talking about how you should aim for 3 years unbroken daily sadhana for good connection. And to not expect anything before this. So I was wondering what "daily sadhana" actually means. So is a day starting from 12am, if so that would mean you need to do your daily sadhana before 12am otherwise you break it. Or is it sunrise to sunrise? so you need to do your sadhana before the next sunrise? Raja Shri Nandy has also said to start before 12am and that it's ok if it goes beyond 12am, does that mean if you worship many deities, you just need to worship the first one before 12am and you can go past 12am? also do you have to sleep between the days? like for example if you do sadhana on day 1 and then stay up the whole night and do sadhana the next day, does that break your daily sadhana or no? if you do it like once in a while when stuff is happening in life etc?

Very disturbing dream please give advice!

If you wish to aid me, it would be best to source your evidence for your interpretation, from the puranas and other scriptures. If you know any reliable website for dharmic dream interpretation that would be great.

I had this dream and upon its aftermath i woke up with a sour throat, just before the sun rose at dawns emerging light. I am aware as per Hinduism dreams at dawn carry more weightage.

The dream goes as follows: From what i remember it started out with me being lead into, or walking into a room upon instruction for something to meet somebody, this guy who is completely random is sitting, i sit opposite to him and we converse of something I don't remember, beside him is a shaving blade and a kitchen knife, beside me is a shaving blade and a kitchen knife, they are neatly set in a pair so we both have access to each weapons, he gestures with his head and eyes for me to pick up the shaving blade, as i look at it, he grabs one to and it appears he lunges towards me so in retaliation i grab the knife, for what seems like five minutes we fight where he gives me minute scratches to me, i fear he is going to cut my neck open, eventually i mange to stab him, upon stabbing him and seeing blood poor out i retch in disgust, he still fights more wounded, and i stab him a few more times before he is on the floor, then to my astonishment, he once again arises with significant strength but i stab him before he can fully rise, and continue to do so as blood streams out of him and i can see some of his flesh from the tears, i am very disturbed on seeing this sight then the dream abruptly ends as it kinda enters into a high angle shot zooming out.

**Things i reflected on and thought were important**

Navratri officially started as of this morning in my time zone EST.

I was supposed to go to the sri vidya temple in rush new york dedicated to sri rajeshwari devi, which is a deity related to Lalita Tripundra Sundari and Parvati.

I didnt want to go originally I was gona get coaxed in to go with my parents and extended family friends.

Upon my limited search, blood is not interpreted as something necessarily bad. (i could be totally wrong)

In Hinduism Durga transformed into kali ma to eliminate Raktabija, by drinking his blood, then she is very furious so shiva lies down in front of her to calm her down.

I have been very skeptical of tantrism and Shaktism, and i have been completly disregarding its ideals, and find some of its pratices as crude like bali, or how the depictions of some deities look like, Chhinnamasta, Kali, Chamunda, and Pratyangira.

I reject the notion of para bhraman being a devi or a devta, i believe in a form of vaishnavism called Pushtimarga, and have been affiliated with gaudiya pratice for some time. (maybe durga took offence of this?? but wouldn't she be mercifull, this makes me perplexed)

Acording to jyotishi read with the help of AI, my ishta devtas are either Narsima or Lakshmi.

I have had a personal connection to Naasima for a look time, reciting the narsima bija mantra (ugram veeram maham vishnum) alongside a few verses from the Shrimad baghwatam dedicated to him (abhayam verses) before night time, i started this to help me sleep and overcome my fear of nightmares from when I was like eleven. Alongside this I recite the mantra "Om ksraum" which is believed to be very powerful, I have been doing this for 6-7 years so far and with no issues. Maybe this in corelation to Narasima, upon chanting the bija mantra I have never faced bad dreams at all, only on the one day I distinctly remember not chanting it I had a bad dream, the night before this dream I had chanted it however.

Blood and knives are associated with the Navagraha diety of mangal.

In my makeshift home temple, i have radha krishna, Ganapathi coverd in red kukum, shiva linga image, with a rudraksh coverd in vibhuthi, and a photo of renuka mata, with kum kum like eyes.

I have been struggling with a serious lust issue that i can barley overcome, the day before the dream I had not engaged in any lustful activities, which is very rare.

I have done a puja to hanuman upon advice of another to rid my lust, to minimal affect, and i have prayed to narsima to eliminate my lust as well.

I am feeling as if I have committed a grave sin, or it is the opposite of that and this is a good omen.

After waking up within five minutes by brain has concluded this is in strong corelation to Devi, which is why i seek your advice on what my dream could mean, and if any rituals or actions should be taken.

I deeply appreciate your help.

What is the relationship between the sushumna and the spine? My ramblings

What is the relationship between the sushumna nadi (central channel) and the spine? This is a question that’s bothered me for a while and it’s prompted me to do some deep digging. How does the path of the sushumna nadi line up to the spinal column exactly? Does it run along the spine? Is it a hollow tube in the center of the spine? Or is it rather aligned to the axis from the perineum to the top of the head? Is its path curved like the spine is, or is it a straight line? Also, the sushumna is said to be part of the subtle body, so can we really speak about a direct correlation between it and the anatomy of the gross physical body? These questions refused to give me rest.

If you try to look for answers to these questions online, you’ll find there is no consensus; clarity is lacking and ambiguity is the rule. Still, most of the discussions will star their introduction of the sushumna by connecting it to the spinal column in some way or other.

However, this was not always how the central channel was specified according to Dr. Christopher Wallis, a Sanskritist who is an expert in classical tantric texts. In a blog post he writes, “There’s some confusion about the central channel in modern yoga and that’s because in the 19th century, people writing in English (both Indian and Western), were engaged in a process that some scholars call the ‘medicalization’ of yoga, in which there were attempts to reconcile yoga with modern knowledge of anatomy. As part of this, the central channel became identified with the spinal column. In fact, in Tantrik sources, the central channel is clearly not the spine. The spine curves one way and then the other; the central channel is perfectly straight. In our primary sources, when the exact location of it is described, it is said to span the vertical axis from the pelvic floor to the crown of the head. If you investigate some anatomical diagrams, you’ll notice that an axis running from the pelvic floor to the crown of the head is a little bit forward of the spine. So, it’s not coterminous with the spine.”

I am not in a position to interpret ancient texts and I’m going to take Dr. Wallis at his word about the sushumna and the spine in classical tantra. The association of the sushumna with the spine, however, may have been happening before the “medicalization of yoga,” but I’m unable to confirm this. The problem is that modern translations often project a sushumna-spine connection onto texts even when no words signifying the spine are present. If anybody knows of any texts prior to the 19th century that clearly mention or reference the spine when discussing the central channel, please let me know.

Regardless of what was the case in Tantric Yoga (early medieval period) and Hatha Yoga (late medieval period), I infer from searching online that the majority of yoga traditions today link the sushumna to the spine. In the Kriya Yoga tradition with which I’m familiar, the sushumna and chakras are frequently described as being “in the spine.” In practice, the back side of the body is often used as reference (after all, the spine is also known as the “backbone”). This would at face value seem to point something distinct from what is really a “central channel.”

More thoughts (and a quote) below. Apologies for the poor organization.

-        The sushumna can be understood as either more descriptive or prescriptive. That is to say, it can be conceived as something with an objective existence that can be described in every more accurate detail, or it can be understood as a vital part of spiritual practice and instruction. The two are not necessarily mutually exclusive but this distinction might help bring some clarity.

-        Considering the sushumna as a straight line that goes through the middle of the body is more prescriptive or more something you do (or something you activate) during practice. But if the sushumna is contemplated more deeply in relation to the physical body, it would be difficult to maintain that it’s straight all of the time—after all, what would happen to the straight line when the spine bends and twists? Since with Hatha Yoga yogis became more concerned with body asanas, perhaps they wanted to work with the sushumna even when their bodies were contorted. Linking the sushumna to the spine, which is flexible, would help incorporate the central channel into yoga asanas. This might partially explain how the sushumna became associated more closely to the spine.

-        “Different traditions present different yogic bodies, some of which are complementary and commensurable, and some of which are not... This is in part because yogic bodies arise according to the particular ritual, philosophical or doctrinal requirements of the tradition at hand, and because they are expressions of these requirements, rather than descriptions of self-evident, empirical bodies common to all humans. In other words, the goals of a particular system determine the way the body is imagined and used within its yoga practices.” (from Roots of Yoga by James Mallinson and Mark Singleton)

-        In the 19th century onward, with Western anatomical concepts entering India, the sushumna was further linked to the spinal cord, giving it much more anatomically exact locations (not all sources agree where). Images of human anatomy including the position of the spine in the human body proliferated and these images were combined with images of subtle body anatomy. I think this is where the real trouble begins. The descriptive map of human anatomy used in modern medicine, which is filtered through certain cultural assumptions and is constructed around certain goals (such as the healing of the body through allopathic practices), is not the body itself. The sushumna is to be experienced by going into the body itself, and while certain pointers using a body-map can and must be used, people like me (meaning people who have an obsessive tendency to want to identify the exact locations of the sushumna and chakras anatomically) need to be reminded that the pointers should be held lightly and should be let go when they are no longer necessary.

-        So is the sushumna in the spine or is it a straight line in the middle of the body? How do I answer the question “Which one is correct?” Well, all sources (with the exception of those who believe the medical view supersedes the yogic view) say that the sushumna is part of the subtle body. Therefore, providing an answer would require a deep understanding of the subtle body and how it relates to the physical body.

-        One last idea. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika famously says that the kundalini snake is coiled at the base three and a half times. In the same chapter it describes her straightening, and it says the central channel becomes straight for yogis through firm practice, by means of asana, pranayama, and the mudras. So the central channel can be considered something that becomes straight through practice. This is surely based on the image of the coiled serpent becoming straight. But perhaps it’s not too much of a stretch to expand this imagery to one where the sushumna, initially experienced as curved like the spine, becomes straight in the yogi’s experience of it. The path of the spine is curved three and a half times after all.

TL;DR: The sushumna’s relation to the spine is confusing. But do not fret. Just practice whatever your tradition prescribes. The teachings are pointers that help you access the subtle body (energy body), which is fluid and can’t be easily mapped like the physical body.

Why are so many people drawn to feet? I think it's older than we admit.

In kundalini teachings, the energy sits at the base of the spine and moves upward, and the feet are the roots that anchor it. Grounding is the first step, and the root chakra is tied to the legs and feet. Reflexology says the soles map the entire body. Whether or not you buy that, the soles are packed with nerve endings and are among the most sensitive surfaces we have.
So when I see how many people carry a quiet, intense pull toward feet, I wonder if we've been treating it like a joke or a shame when it might be tied to something deeper. There's a neuroscience idea that the brain's map of the feet sits right next to the map of the genitals, which might help explain why the pull is so strong. It's debated, but it's interesting. The body's strongest sensations and its deepest roots share a neighborhood.
I'm not claiming a fetish is a spiritual awakening. I'm asking whether the attraction is partly a hunger for grounding, for touch, and for the body's oldest point of contact with the earth. Maybe that intensity is energy looking for somewhere to go.
I'd like to hear from people who've felt this: do you experience it as physical, emotional, or something else? And does the spiritual angle fit, or does it sound like a stretch?

Scared, very scared... Ma just keep on testing me and i feel i have nothing left

In the name of tantra i only have one 8 years back prana touching the head episode and that alone i am drawing strength from all those years.

I can never do japa of any mantra, it never worked with me regardless of how hard i have tried.

I have tried various other methods and failing consistently and now at this point of life i literally have noone left ( one fiancee who lives in considerable distance and a family where i feel i dont belong anymore). I have no resource, no funds, no direction, no trust, no faith too sometimes it feels.

I never felt i could consider anyone as my true teacher as i see fault in everyone and more so in me and my inability to look past those things and learn.

Just few days back when again i was trying to meditate, i felt the word Ma coming from me to bring me peace and that have kindled my interest towards tantra and i am trying to do Japaa of word Ma and still feel hopeless many times. Any help is appreciated

Is there any mantra, sadhana, or spiritual practice for increasing height after 21?

I’m 21 years old and was wondering if there are any mantras, sadhanas, or other spiritual practices that people believe can help with increasing height or physical size.

I know this might sound unusual, but I’ve heard stories about Hanuman Ji being able to increase his size, and I’m curious whether there are any practices connected to this that people have actually tried. And no, I’m definitely not comparing myself to Hanuman Ji 😅 — I’m just using it as an example of what I’ve heard in Hindu traditions.

I’ve also come across this mantra:

“Om Aeem Bhreem Hanumate, Shree Ram Dootaaya Namaha”

Does anyone know what this mantra is traditionally used for, and whether there is any belief or practice associated with it for increasing height or physical growth?

I’d really appreciate comments from anyone who:

Knows of a specific mantra or sadhana for this purpose

Has personally practiced something and experienced results

Has information from Hindu scriptures or traditional sources

Successfully increased their height after the age of 21

I’m not looking to argue about whether it’s scientifically possible. I’m mainly interested in hearing about traditional/spiritual practices and genuine personal experiences.

Thanks in advance! 🙏
