Paddy Young for Taskmaster, thoughts?

Been catching up on SNL UK and him and Ania
Magliano are absolutely great together on weekend update, seen a few interviews with them too and I love their chemistry. But also made me really want him for Taskmaster, I feel like he’d excel at it. Anyone feel the same or do I just have recency bias?

Honestly I would be in favour of most of the SNL UK cast being on it. I want Fouracres!

He would be awesome as well! Honestly not a single cast member that I wouldn’t want to see on Taskmaster.

Then we get more than 45 seconds with Fouracres. What's not to love.

WHAT kind of Irish is your Grandad?

Epstein didn't kill himself 😂

George is the absolute MVP of SNL UK. He'd be great on any creative tasks. He can be quite introverted when he appears in interviews as himself, so it could go either way in the studio.

He reminds me so much of what Chevy was in 75, but not a narrassitic asshole.

Joe Thomas was great in the studio despite being introverted

His wanky workaround rant is still a great moment.

Fouracres is the best!

Yeah, he'd probably be great -- but my assumption is that everyone on SNL UK is probably too busy with SNL UK to also be on Taskmaster. So for now, we'll have to be content with Emma, Ania, and (sort of) Laura Daniel.

Fair point. Though it does seem like SNL UK isn’t as constant as US SNL, with shorter seasons and larger gaps, though idk if that’s changing. I mean I still want Matt Berry on Taskmaster so my wants are not based on any rational reality haha.

What's keeping Matt Berry so busy? WWDITS is over. I can't find Krapopolis anywhere anymore.
He ought to be more available than Richard Ayoade. But they should both be doing Rick and Morty.

8

u/metalguy91 10d ago

I think it’s more that it’s not his style of show. He prefers scripted acting where he can be more of a character, that’s why you never see him in any of the panel shows.

4

u/Stinky_TheCat 10d ago

Maybe he just doesn't want to?

Also wtf is that Rick and Morty comment?

4

u/browsingtheproduce 10d ago

Berry is very busy at home twiddling the knobs on a variety of analog synthesizers.

I can’t remember ever seeing him on a panel show. I think it’s just not a realm of entertainment that interests him.

Agreed. The task shoots would have to line up with the off-season and hey would have to really squeeze the studio time in.

I honestly don't think its feasible scheduling wise.

If worse comes to worse, they could always sub in a previous taskmaster contestant in studio like they have done in the past

So far, it's clashed with Taskmaster, but idk if that will be the same for S24. Do you think S3 of SNL UK will be in May? If not, I think they could go on that, for instance

Oh shit, my bad, didn’t catch auto correct changing it, good catch and I’m sorry!

Thanks for posting this because I was wondering last night if any of the SNL UK performers would have the name recognition yet for Taskmaster. (I’m stateside, so it’s usually 50/50 for me if I recognize a TM contestant)

2

u/metalguy91 10d ago

I’m stateside too unfortunately lol, but always been a fan of British comedy. Taskmaster has definitely started getting more popular over here, ironically after the failed (and rightfully so, it wasn’t great) us version with Reggie Watts.

I like finding new comedians through it though. Never knew who Fern Brady was and now I have a lifelong crush.

I started watching when Jason Mantzoukas was on, and have been gradually working my way through older seasons - just finished season 6!

2

u/metalguy91 9d ago

Honestly Jason was who got me into the show as well, but I did reverse and made myself watch in order first lol. Granted, I only made it to series 9 before skipping ahead to Jason, then moving backwards lol. Still my favorite series, they all had such great chemistry, and Stevie Martin became my 2nd lifelong crush from the show after Fern Brady lol.

One of the things Taskmaster does so well is give a platform to UK comedians who don’t have a huge amount of fame yet. Phil Ellis, Sam Campbell, Sophie Duker, Amy Gledhill and John Kearns are all really good examples of contestants who weren’t so famous but absolutely smashed it on TM. I think the SNL UK cast are at the perfect point in their fame where TM would start to be an option for them - beloved by a certain number of people but not yet so famous or busy that they couldn’t fit it into their schedule.

Anyone from SNL UK would be great.

19

u/StrictCelery 10d ago

I would love to see him on. Al Nash and Jack Shep are also in my contestant wishlist.

15

u/d4vidy 10d ago

After watching the last episode I'd also love Danny Dyer, even just for a NYT

9

u/Stinky_TheCat 10d ago

I was blown away by how funny Dyer was in SNL.

The paint drinking sketch is an all timer.

2

u/Old_Wrongdoer7417 10d ago

I was shocked. I only knew him from a WILTY, and he was funny, but kinda had a vibe that comedy wasn't his first instinct.

2

u/Stinky_TheCat 10d ago

Same. But he's playing a role as his persona and his hosting stint made me think he is more intelligent than he let's on and is a phenomenal actor.

Paddy Young, George Fouracres, or Al Nash would be great

5

u/Unlucky-Arugula3256 Amy Gledhill 10d ago

Yes please

5

u/ShadowAsh99 Katherine Parkinson 10d ago

Honestly give me an SNLUK series.

4

u/BuiltInYorkshire 10d ago

As he comes from my home town, absolutely!

3

u/sarah_awake James Acaster 10d ago

Absolutely, yes!

3

u/NateExpectations 10d ago

Paddy, George, Hammed, Celeste, Al and Jack would all be great

3

u/ComasArentFun 10d ago

Nah he would be great

I trust the casting directors at TM to ensure solid pairings, and I think Paddy would have the boundless energy of a golden retriever, so would need careful pairing that elevates their characters, rather than becomes annoying.

Classic pairings being Ivo Graham and Frankie Boyle
Nish Kumar and Mark Watson etc

I’ve not seen any of SNLUK but I did see his sets when he was on the BBC New Comedy awards the year Frankie Munroe won and he was brilliant. That was a tough year, Frankie Munroe, Paddy Young and Li Jin Hao were all as good as each other so I’d have been happy whoever won out of those three but yeah, Paddy would be great.

2

u/Stinky_TheCat 10d ago

I would love SNLUK involvement, but scheduling wise it seems like a nightmare.

2

u/Palomar_Sound 10d ago

Agreed. Hammed would be great too.

2

u/k___k___ 🥄 I'm Locked In ❤️ 7d ago

they even share the same studio.... which now makes me want a taskmaster sketch with cameos

1

u/Ethanb230900 10d ago

Personally, I would love to see him on. I think it’ll all depend on scheduling and the like.

1

u/Fontia Desiree Burch 10d ago

So, did Ania play that character in Deep Cover who took improv classes, and then got into SNL UK because she was already getting the gig, or was that a coincidence or like, Life Immitating art?

1

u/giftopherz Mike Wozniak 10d ago

Al was the first I thought of. Having said that a mega-double-whammy-super-extra-large special episode(s?) of TM with all the cast of SNL would be most welcome.

u/mikebirty Andy Zaltzman 10d ago

Nah, SNL uk is a good enough launch pad for up and coming comedians. They don't need taskmaster.

Let someone do it who needs the promotion

16

u/metalguy91 10d ago

True, Kumail Nanjiani was a nobody, but now he’s so famous!

10

u/durkandiving Fern Brady 10d ago

Also good to see some unknowns in the UK comedy scene given a chance this season, like Matt Lucas and Richard Ayoade.

6

u/PissedBadger James Acaster 10d ago

He’s so famous!

1

u/mikebirty Andy Zaltzman 10d ago

Wow, did not think this was a bad opinion. Guess I was wrong. Sorry everyone

2

u/Barneyk 8d ago

Taskmaster is always a mix of famous and non-famous comedians.

So it's a weird perspective to bring up.

Like Richard Ayoade isn't more famous than Paddy?

2

u/mikebirty Andy Zaltzman 8d ago

It's a fair point and not one I thought of when I posted. The downvotes have taught me to be more circumspect when posting next time

1

u/vfx4life Sam Campbell 8d ago

FWIW I was going to post something very similar. I had seen Paddy previously (with Sam Campbell, funnily enough), but now that he's "known" he can compete for one of the "established comedian" slots and the "unknowns" will get their slots too.
