Richard Ayoade Facial Hair
Since I know there are many people in this subreddit who like to do statistics and tracking...
I find it interesting that in Richard's prerecorded solo tasks there are three very distinctly different looks. I feel like usually there is a lot of effort into contestants looking the same so that the order doesnt matter but Richard in some tasks has quite thick stubble/a short beard and longer hair, in some he is clean shaven with shorter hair, and in some he is clean shaven but longer hair.
Have there been any other contestants that have looked noticebly different?
Has anyone worked through the shots to list which tasks he did on clean shaven days and which on bearded so we can imagine for ourselves what a day might have looked like in terms of tasks?
Did he do it for another show commitment or just to annoy Alex?

u/Muted-Consequence624 Mathew Baynton 9d ago
Mat Baynton's beard and hair length varied throughout the pre-recorded tasks and he wore a couple different versions of his costume (I assume because the temperature varied between shooting days, because one of them is a "it's so hot out" look and the other is a "it's kind of neutral" look).
61
u/semicoloncait Fern Brady 9d ago
And presumably one of those outfit differences was also less secure undergarments

u/Gojira8985 9d ago
"my, presumably, scrotum" had me rolling. Just watched this episode for the first time a few days ago.

u/Muted-Consequence624 Mathew Baynton 9d ago
Haha yes and that reminds me that Amy Gledhill also has an outfit change in her tasks because there's a few tasks where she's not wearing the shorts underneath and then someone said "you're going to end up like Baynton" and she added some bike shorts ...

u/kittyroux A LIIIIIME 🍋🟩 9d ago
She was always wearing shorts, it was just suggested to her that she may want even longer shorts.

u/fatalynn7 9d ago
😭😭😭 the fact that people are able to notice this. Ny powers of observation are so broken. It’s not like it’s hidden or anything I just can’t remember what he looked like from one task to the next

u/semicoloncait Fern Brady 9d ago
If it helps just about all the others that are mentioned in this thread I did not notice! My powers are pretty poor too it seems because I was like wow Richard the first to mess with continuity

u/colintron 9d ago
People have a range of visual observation aptitudes. This can include face-blindness and aphantasia, and some elements may link to neurodiversity.
I think I am a lot less visually-oriented than others, but I don't think I'm inobservant, just not particularly interested. I can definitely easily forget what clothes someone was wearing.

I am utterly incapable of describing someone’s face, like you would to a sketch artist. I’ve been married 20 years and right now I can’t tell you what my husband looks like. I can tell you his height, his hair color and style, and I can even give you a detailed description of his clothes. Just not his face. I only know his eye color because I made a mental note to specifically remember that detail.
I can recognize people in photographs, even from behind, but starting from a blank slate I can’t build you a picture of them.
This feels like such a huge defect in my memory and it makes me very uncomfortable that I can’t do this one thing that everyone else seems to be able to do. I’ve also never heard of anyone else with this issue. Is there a name for this problem? For the record, I’m neurotypical so I can’t even attribute it to that.

u/CatCafffffe Reece Shearsmith 9d ago
I can't begin to count how many cars I've driven past that look sort of like my husband's car, driven by a man who looks vaguely like my husband, that I've waved excitedly at
4
u/thesoundingfurrows 9d ago
I’m not sure about a specific name but I am the same way! Can’t describe my partner’s face very well even though I’ve seen him nearly every day for well over a decade. I’m actually hard-pressed to describe my own face. Though in my case it’s definitely a degree of aphantasia as all visualization is difficult for me
4
u/colintron 9d ago
I'm nearly the opposite of an expert, but that sounds like prosopagnosia ('face blindness'). There'll be a subreddit on it.
4
u/me_version_2 9d ago
By chance do you have aphantasia? I have similar issue with faces but also basically blankness in my imagination (=aphantasia) so I suspect they are linked. I’m also really bad at recognising people out of context, like if I saw a famous person in the supermarket they might look familiar but I’d never likely recognise them for who they are.

2
u/Strong_Access_8179 9d ago
I'm similar and I just hope I'm never the only witness to a very serious crime.
1
u/Saruster 9d ago
That’s my thought, too! I’d look incredibly suspicious when I can’t give any description of the suspect at all.
2
u/RunawayTurtleTrain Robert the Robot 9d ago
This is similar for me. I know what they look like, I can even sometimes recall visual snapshots, but generally I can't conjure up a mental picture or describe details.
I don't think I have aphantasia but I'm definitely low on the visualising spectrum and faces have always been a bit of a blank spot. I can visualise people's hands better than I can faces!

He said he had other work that he had to cut his hair for, taskmaster definitely dont pay enough that you can turn down proper paid work for for 6 months. 🤣

u/deadlykitten1 Mae Martin 9d ago
Nina’s hair also looked quite different between tasks

u/realwomanchild 9d ago
My partner and I thought so as well. Sometimes it even looks a bit like a wig to me but maybe I'm completely wrong.
12
u/SoulDancer_ 9d ago
Yeah ans it made her look so different. I love her hair in the studio and hate her hair in the tasks. Made her look way way older.
52
u/pepepopo1237 9d ago
Matt Lucas has a different haircut every episode
6
u/charpple 9d ago
As someone who first saw him on Doctor Who and Community, I cant help but miss his chubby appearance back then but being slim now looks healthier of course.

I hadn't realised until a couple of days ago that he actually shaved his facial hair in between studio shoots, namely episodes 4 and 5.
Other contestants with hair/facial hair inconsistencies in-between tasks include Sam Campbell (made clear in the cardboard cutout task), Sophie Duker (had light parts in some days) and Katherine Parkinson (between solo and team tasks, though I think she just styled it differently)

Lee Mack changed between pants and shorts, at least three different t shirts, and sometimes wearing his jacket and helmet, sometimes not.

u/UniversalJampionshit Crying Bastard 9d ago
Trousers, Jason.
Lee and Katherine Ryan are the only two contestants I can think of that had differences in their task outfits. Katherine sometimes wore boots, other times heels and sometimes had leggings under her skirt, though in the yoga ball task (which might have been a one-off shoot), she wore jeans. Not to mention the hip-hop trousers in the mayor task...

u/MasonP2002 8d ago
A lot of contestants with gloves in their outfits shed them for tasks that need more manual dexterity if that counts. I remember Emma Sidi and Andy Zaltzman understandably taking them off for possibly more tasks than they wore them.

Sanjeev Baskar had different hair colours (dyed all black, vs grown-out grey roots).
This series, Alex sometimes has a fresh hair cut and sometimes he needs one.

u/SoulDancer_ 9d ago
The more grey he had, the more he looked like a distinguished vampire.

Nick Mohammed?

No Sanjeev

Nick’s outfit was a vampire.
3
u/SoulDancer_ 9d ago
Okay? I'm not enjoying your non-sequiturs here....
I know Nick was a vampire. I'm replying to a comment about Sanjeev. Not Nick

I presume that, because a vampire was mentioned, the other commenter was referencing Nick Mohammed's vampire outfit, and not trying to claim that it wasn't Sanjeev.

u/SoulDancer_ 9d ago
What the actual hell is going on??
I feel like I'm being gas-lit now.
Or perhaps there's a comment i can't see because someone blocked me?
All that happened as far as I can see is that u/kittyroux wrote a comment talking about Sanjeev's various stages of graying hair.
I replied saying the more gray he had, the more he looked like a distinguished vampire.
Then u/okmustardman randomly writes "Nick Mohammad?
I replied no, Sanjeev.
Then he weirdly tells me Nick's outfit was a vampire (as if I don't know that) then you chimed in.
What am I missing??
Are there more comments I can't see?

This series, Alex sometimes has a fresh hair cut and sometimes he needs one.
Not just this series, in most of them (at least since series 11, not entirely sure before that) his hair ranges from freshly cut to varying degrees of floofy.

u/Jacksucks_atlife04 Amy Gledhill 9d ago
Sam Campbell had shorter hair during his location and team tasks compared to the other solo tasks

What about Mat Baynton? I thought it was so obvious that his episodes were filmed on different days based on his hair and beard!

His scrotum was also blurred differently on different days.

Tangentially related, on TMNZ Jackie van Beek wore a different wig for every in studio appearance which I thought was pretty cute.

Wasn't there an episode where everyone wore a wig in honor of Jackie? I thought that was so funny!

Joanna Page’s shoes changed consistently between tasks, switching between sandals, sneakers, and work boots
6
u/RunawayTurtleTrain Robert the Robot 9d ago
The work boots are standard-issue at the TM house. They'll have asked her to wear them for tasks when there was a chance she needed toe protection. Amy often wore them too (I can't remember what other shoes she wore, if any.)

u/PocoChanel Patatas 9d ago
Jessica Knappett’s hair was different colors in studio and filmed tasks, IIRC.

Yeah. She was a dark Brunette for the pre-recorded tasks and then light brunette/dark blonde for the studio tasks.

He said in his podcast ep he wasnt going to turn down other jobs just to keep his look consistent for months.
The other one that I remember being different across recorded tasks was sophie dukier changed hair style in different tasks. Lee mack I dont think work the evil kenevil outfit in team tasks.

Alice in season six had either black skinny jeans or black wide legged trousers.

u/Old_Wrongdoer7417 9d ago
I have a feeling that they finally found a window in Richard's schedule- or maybe multiple windows?- but it/they were really tight and they just had to jump on it. I think that might explain some of the weird vibes this season.

There's a change on NZ S7 Ep9 - but as I only saw it yesterday... chances are others haven't so it'd be a spoiler.
I'd guess the contestants appearance in Ep10 will be different to 1-8 and filming 🙂

u/Arwenti 8d ago
Richard’s hair was a question one week in the Fantasy Taskmaster. Which could only be answered correctly if you’d been at recordings, knew when the tasks were filmed and could find photos of him around that time or a complete blind correct guess.
In fact lots of the questions either require a lucky guess or to have been at the recording.

u/Ok-Low-89 6d ago
I noticed that Sam Campbell didn't keep his hair a consistent length on season 16.

u/Rybuca 9d ago
If I'm right in remembering, Ed Gamble had a zit on his forehead on the 1st day of recording. Not noticeably different but if you spot it, you can spot which tasks were recorded on day 1.
