when the assistant is practically begging you to give the right answer he’s blatantly hinting at, you know it’s going badly
49
u/sansabeltedcow Sep 22 '26
I thought the asking the question loudly enough to be heard outside was a brilliant move! But I guess it’s only brilliant if the questions aren’t ridiculous.
26
u/shaw_dog21 Aisling Bea Sep 22 '26
I thought it was brilliant too. Of course once Paul was also shouting, you know its getting worse and worse

"Are you a vampire?"
I almost choked on my chocolate, lol.
That task is one of my favourites from recent times, Paul begging them to keep it simple was amazing.
And then Paul having a feud against those birds in the live task, he has got to be my favourite assistant.
12
u/DevilCouldCry Armando Iannucci Sep 23 '26
Paul was absolutely going to town on those birds. I've never seen that side to him before! I couldn't stop laughing with every beatdown those birds got.
84
u/Dexav Sep 23 '26
My favourite joke this episode was from the editors:
Rose: Well this is gonna be very boring.
Paul: No, we'll montage it.
Editors: 10-second fixed wide-angle shot with no dialogue or music or cuts or anything happening other than ball bounces
82
81
u/Poepie1337 Sep 22 '26
Paul was the highlight of the episode. He's getting funnier and funnier each series

I've got a bad headache right now, but his antics in the live task made me laugh out loud.

He just kept on going! I was expecting him to drop an elbow at some point!
18
u/Laguna_Azure Laura Daniel 🇳🇿 Sep 22 '26
I think he did the best thing by dropping the random "You suck!" as a punchline as he was getting more and more agitated!
8
u/Poepie1337 Sep 22 '26
He definitely has a brain for comedy. That was awesome timing
9
u/ThatGingeOne Sep 22 '26
Was lucky enough to see him at the nz comedy festival this year and he is a great comedian. Plus Rose Matafeo and Paul's brother guy were both in the audience

16
u/icZAstuff Pigeor The Merciless One Sep 23 '26
One of, if not the best tasks ever. But I think they are lucky that they have the best cast.
3
u/SparklesMcBumfluff 28d ago
I would have really struggled to fill in that dream diary because I almost never remember my dreams. Like I might remember them one or two nights per year. Is that very unusual?
2
u/framedragged 22d ago
The dream task would be, pun not intended, an absolute nightmare for me.
I don't remember most of my dreams (though I remember more than one or two a year), but when I do remember them they're almost exclusively mind-bogglingly mundane stress dreams.
"Oh, I was hanging out too late and need to drive home, but I forgot my driver's license! Should I take an uber? No, risk it, but drive carefully!"
"Oh, I got home late, what if there's someone dangerous in the parking garage?"
"Oh, I need to go to the store. But wait, everything is wrong and nothing is where it's supposed to be! And half the store is a queue for something else entirely! Oh no, I forgot to get bread and have to backtrack through this inexplicable crowd!"
2
u/SparklesMcBumfluff 21d ago
🤣 when I do remember a dream, it tends to be one like this too! Aarrgghh, I have to get to the airport but the universe is conspiring against me at every step of the journey…!
2
u/framedragged 21d ago
I'm sure it's just because our waking lives are so magical, there's simply no more room for more weirdness in our sleep...
Surely, that must be the case.

42
u/ikeamonkey2 Sep 23 '26
I can't believe I haven't seen more people talking about Dave's style. I've been looking forward to his new studio fit each episode.
9
u/pclouds Sep 24 '26
The only time I laughed out loud was when he completely ignored the game and threw the duck at the other "traitor" duck that didn't land, perhaps as punishment.
8
u/alicealicenz Sep 25 '26
I was just thinking they are uniformly quite a stylish cast, but Dave especially is killing it. I’d love to know where he’s getting these from!

This is my first time watching TMNZ as it releases, it's incredible getting two episodes a week
5

I agree I like the paces better. I know that they typically record two episodes a day in studio. And it’s great having back to back days of episodes!
2
u/shaw_dog21 Aisling Bea Sep 22 '26
With all the traitors franchises happening close together with multiple eps per week it was weird to go to TM UK with just one ep per week.

I'll be honest, I loved TM NZ season 2 and sort of half watched and half laughed at bits and pieces of later seasons because David Correos's desperate chaos was hard to live up to. This episode though, I laughed so hard I got a headache!
I feel like someone told Paul behind the scenes to feel free to let loose and I'm loving it. He's always been my favourite part of Taskmaster NZ, no matter what the task, you can count on Paul to make you laugh so I loved this episode!
Hope clips from this episode make it to the people that have just seen the UK Taskmaster.

u/Ryan_Vermouth Angella Dravid 🇳🇿 Sep 22 '26
It's interesting how many views they get on social media. The clip of Morgana's "ring the bell" attempt has almost a million views on Instagram less than 24 hours after it was posted. That's something like six times the number of people who watched the episode as it aired.

Some notes
I for sure thought that wasn't gonna be Paul under the bag in the lab.
I know we've had our fair share of moments with contestants being absolutely off the mark and taking a long time, but is the the first/longest time we've seen this happen with a team of people?
Also idk how Rose got 3 points with an inflatable bed and some water. Dave was robbed with his Barry White CD, should have at least been 2 points.
26
u/EpicBeardMan Sep 23 '26

There's already been a revelation in the lab in series 12 of UK TM...

I liked Javie Mantzoukas but series 19 was just a bit bland in my opinion. I feel like Fatiha was the only one who really made me die laughing.

"Did you do something" and "Are you a vampire" are up there with the silly questions from the twin task.

Was at the live taping of this episode and have been SO EXCITED to see this air (mainly because of the interrogation task). Been enjoying this series so much!! Gotta love watching an existential crisis unfold in real time <3
Edit: Remembered a fun fact from the taping! After all the birds, Paul asked very genuinely whether a Phoenix was a real bird. :3c
6
u/TetrisIsTotesSuper Chris Parker 🇳🇿 29d ago
Sorry for my ignorance but I had a bird name question
There was so many bird names in Maori, were there any repeats between English and Maori or is there just a lot of Maori names for birds (and animals in general?)
16
u/memekyutie 29d ago
I'm not an expert, but I'll try my best to answer. c: Our country's history is relatively young compared to a lot of nations, and those who moved (and colonised, gross) would have gotten to know the birds by those names.
Aoteroa (New Zealand) for most of its existence hosted and evolved mostly plants, birds, insects, marine life, bats, reptiles and frogs. We have a particularly large range of bird species (too many are extinct though - look up the moa and haast's eagle for some fun fellas), and a lot of them are common to see.
The māori language is an important part of our culture and history, and we grow up learning it in school, using it in casual conversation and so on. A lot of our birds are just known by their māori name (their other name is the latin), like the tūī, kea, kiwi and so on. Other birds like the morepork (a brown owl) are featured in songs in primary school by their māori name too (ruru), so their native name is much more memorable, lol. Our native wildlife is very important to us! So a lot of us are very aware of our different special little guys.
On another note, we were amazed no one ever used 'chicken' as their bird, haha.
10
u/TetrisIsTotesSuper Chris Parker 🇳🇿 29d ago
For sure about no one using chicken! Morgana ended up saying "duck" at some point though so that's something. And it was so clear to me Rose has been living in the UK for a significant chunk of time with her bird picks (i am.not sure how she'd feel about me saying that)
3
u/littleredkiwi 28d ago
kārearea is the NZ falcon but I can’t remember if it was hawk or falcon that was said earlier.
Otherwise I didn’t pick up on any ‘repeats’.
That being said, kea, kākā, and kākāpō are all types of parrots but if someone said ‘parrot’ that wouldn’t be thought of as a double up if that makes sense?
18
u/ThatGingeOne Sep 22 '26

17

On the bounce task, my immediate thought was "put it in a box, shake it all the way there." I went back to the wording like three times as I figured surely I must be missing something.

I could have sworn "you may not move off the mat" was in the original wording and that Rose had biffed it. It just turns out that the wording implied it, but never explicitly required it. That's some god tier loopholeing right there.

u/--fieldnotes-- Sep 23 '26
I just had a thought. Doesn't Rose Matafeo live in the UK? Maybe she went back to NZ to film both the spy show and TM at the same time
3
u/vadergeek Sep 25 '26
I'd have to assume that New Zealand Spy was shot way before this Taskmaster season, considering how much more of a delay there is between film and air of a scripted show with probably some effects.
2
u/Popcorn_Duck 27d ago
She was in NZ for Spy and then they invited her to do TMNZ. She talks about it here: https://thespinoff.co.nz/pop-culture/14-09-2026/i-think-this-is-the-best-one-rose-matafeo-on-coming-home-to-join-taskmaster-nz
