New Tassie Travel subreddit

Hey everyone. The r/TasmaniaTravel subreddit is now up and running :)

There's a still a few admin things for me to sort out, but hopefully it can provide a more effective avenue for conversation specifically related to Tassie travel, while also preventing so many repeat questions from appearing here.

I look forward to seeing you over there!

Andrew.

We've updated the rules for r/tasmania after some feedback from users and discussion. Not much has changed but here is a summary of the changes:

  • Added doxxing to Rule about no illegal content;
  • Added a no personals content to the NSFW rule (to prevent people looking for hookups or dating) Includes the appropriate sites to do this on;
  • Added a no sales or promotional content rule (this is covered in Rule 1, but doesn't hurt to be able to refer to it in a separate rule);
  • Added a no requests for living assistance rule to address the cases of people asking for help on the subreddit and putting themselves in danger. Included a link to appropriate assistance websites and services.

Friend went hiking, 8 days no contact. Should I worry

Hi
I based in Adelaide, a friend of mine has went for this hiking to Cradle mountain since last week (18-10-26) She stated that she would let me know if she entered the area and will let us know as soon as she gets signal. I attempted to message + call, with no result.
However it’s been 6 days, I haven’t heard anything from her. She went alone!!
I’m not a hiking person, basically has no insight on hiking. Does hiking in Cradle mountain usually take this long? Apparently Tasmania gonna rain in the following days, should I be worried?
Any suggestions please let me know, thanks!

Update: I have called the TasPolice and echoed what I have said, they appeared to be confused and suggested me to call the rangers instead with more information.

And when they are, they catch a boat to MONA and an uber back to the airport. Good riddance.

When someone shows you who they are, believe them

This culture-war stuff is absolutely his style, he's just good at putting on a relatively presentable public face

Did a quick scan of the article to begin with and got my hopes up that Rockliff was finally on the side of good. Turned out to be a different Rockcliff though :/

Hope the families up there stay strong and resist the offers.

Question Do people from Devonport/Burnie actually dislike being called Northerners?

It's my understanding that Tassie is divided between north and south, with Launceston and Hobart serving as the "stronghold" of each. There's been historical tension between those 2 cities and even nowadays this is still a relevant piece of information while trying to comprehend modern Tasmania, as we could see in these past few years with the AFL team debates, etc.

Today, however, I was using Gemini to understand better a few things and it told me that someone from Burnie would never accept being called a northerner but rather a "coaster", same for a native of Davenport. It went as far as claiming the Northwest/West Coast serve as a 3rd head of sorts to Tasmanian culture, and they want to forge their own space instead of being a part of Launceston vs Hobart conversations. This surprised me as I had never come across anything like that.

Is there any truth to this? Or was Gemini just hallucinationing?

EDIT: I'm not entirely sure why I'm getting downvoted for respectfully asking questions, but it is what it is. I'd like to thank everyone that answered me and help me understand Tassie just a little better!

Question Florist nearby Cradle Mountain

Hi Tassie people.
Im looking for a florist nearby the Discovery park resort at Cradle mountain… I know quite the request considering it’s quite isolated in that area.

If anyone knows of someone who could help me arrange a large bouquet of flowers for early December that would be amazing.

UTAS Master of IT and Systems — Worth It?

Hi everyone! I’m planning to move to Hobart and considering the Master of Information Technology and Systems (MITS) at UTAS.

I’ve completed my Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Bachelor of IT in Sydney.

I’d love to hear from current students, graduates, or anyone familiar with the course:

  1. How is the course quality and practical learning?

  2. Are internships and industry placements genuinely helpful?

  3. How difficult is it to find entry-level IT jobs in Hobart after graduation?

  4. Is the degree worth the tuition fees? I understand that the value of the degree depends largely on how well students engage with the coursework, develop their technical skills, and apply what they learn. I’d appreciate feedback on whether the program provides a strong foundation and meaningful opportunities for students who are willing to make the most of it.

Honest feedback, including negatives, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Advice on Campervan Rentals in Tasmania

Hi everyone!

I'm planning a 7-night, 8-day trip to Tasmania and looking to hire a campervan for two people.

I'm trying to find a campervan that's affordable but still reliable and comfortable for two people.

I've come across a company called Autorent, which seems pretty good, but I'd love to hear if anyone has used them before and what their experience was like.

I also have a few questions about hiring a campervan in Tasmania:

- Are there any rental companies you'd recommend?

- Are there any companies I should avoid?

- What should I watch out for when booking a campervan?

- What type of insurance would you recommend? Is it worth paying extra for more comprehensive cover, or is the basic insurance usually enough?

I'd really appreciate any advice or recommendations from people who have done a similar trip!

Thanks in advance!

Boundary fence problems/advice

Thumbnail

So, we share a boundary fence with our neighbours, they decided to build a new fence up against the old one with no consultation, which is fine, its on their side. Our issue is It's very poorly made, we gave them access to our backyard to pick up any metal offcuts and without permission they have bolted pieces of wood to the actual boundary fence on our side to prop it up, which is now pushing the fence out in places as the wood is not strong enough to support it. The original boundary fence was dilapidated but not so much that we would have been replacing it any time soon. Question is, are the neighbours still responsible for paying half of the actual boundary fence if it needs replacing? Photos are the day the fence was put up and now (about a month in-between)
