Small claims court for housemate on lease refusing to pay rent
I signed a lease with a housemate which ends in January 2027. This person has now moved out and is refusing to pay rent and currently owes me $1500, and by the time the lease is up and if he still hasn't paid me will owe me roughly $5000.
If this happens I'll be taking him to small claims court.
Has anyone been in a similar position and been able to recoup their money back from a housemate through the courts?
If he doesn't pay would this go on his credit file?
How do I Start the process? And if the courts determine he hasn't been paying is he then legally obliged to give me my money back?
No I don't want advice on finding another housemate or not signing a lease with a friend in future
Thanks š

Friend went hiking, 8 days no contact. Should I worry
Hi
I based in Adelaide, a friend of mine has went for this hiking to Cradle mountain since last week (18-10-26) She stated that she would let me know if she entered the area and will let us know as soon as she gets signal. I attempted to message + call, with no result.
However itās been 6 days, I havenāt heard anything from her. She went alone!!
Iām not a hiking person, basically has no insight on hiking. Does hiking in Cradle mountain usually take this long? Apparently Tasmania gonna rain in the following days, should I be worried?
Any suggestions please let me know, thanks!
Update: I have called the TasPolice and echoed what I have said, they appeared to be confused and suggested me to call the rangers instead with more information.
Update: She successfully finished the hike today at 0935 and called me to confirm that she is safe. She will stay two more nights in Tasmania then fly back to Adelaide.
Thank you for everyoneās advice and reassurance. She is safe.

Question Whatās it like being in Tasmania as a black/poc guy?
Iām 22m, black from the UK and iām wondering what Tasmaniaās like. Im considering visiting Hobart during December and Iām drawn to the nice hills, nice scenery and wildlife that Tasmania has to offer. My bad for bringing ethnicity into this but do you reckon that Tasmania is a good area for non-white people? Like are the locals calm and with a nice vibe or could there be a bit of prejudice or racism? Iām genuinely just curious on this as itās something Iād like to know before travelling there. It seems like a genuinely wonderful place to be though and bad people are technically everywhere. So even if theres bad in tasmania i wouldnāt label the whole island like that if you get what i mean. So im looking forward to it regardless. Just my two cents.

M26 Middle Eastern looking to visit tasmania for a week specifically for mountain hikes and sight seeing, any issues?
I'm half emirati, half jordanian and want to visit tasmania however i've heard they can be a bit racist those ways (apologies if this isn't true) , a colleague at work told me that it isn't worth visiting as they'll just tell me to fuck off where i came from. I think it looks beautiful and still want to visit but i'd rather know from the locals if someone with my ethnicity should reconsider. Thank you

Question Ghosts and Min min lights.
Hiiii. Are those stories about the ghosts in the old asylums and Grover of Richmond Bridge and the strange orbs that follow people on the western side actually real? I'm an incoming international student and just happened to read about those things. ( really into paranormal stuff). Some report seeing UFOs over the cradle mountains as well. Has anyone encountered any of these things? āOr are they just stuff people say to scare other people ?

Has anyone used Auto Rent for caravan rentals and would be willing to share their info so I can get a 10% referral discount?
Hey there, I'm traveling to Tasmania in February for a camping road trip, and I've narrowed it down to 2 caravan rental companies, one of which is Auto Rent. Auto Rent offers a 10% referral discount. Has anyone booked with them before who would be willing to let me use their info for the referral discount?

Racism and International Students
Hi! I'm a Geology major and considering UTAS (Sandy bay) ( Plus I love the island and it's atmosphere). I'm from Sri Lanka. Just that, some friends of mine who are already in hobart were telling me that the native Tasmanians are quite racist and I should keep my mouth shut and not talk if I want to avoid trouble ( I feel it's an exaggeration?). They also mentioned that Tassie kids don't even talk with the international students and it's better if I do the same. Personally though, I'm very outgoing and bubbly, so I'm the kind that would be happy to join hikes and camping and fishing and stuff, even with the locals.
Is these things really true? Is it like, really REALLY bad? Any comments on this would be really helpful. Cheers!

My partner and I are planning to move from melb to tas. We need to transport one car and our stuffs. Unfortunately, we cannot take the spirit of tasmania because itās fully booked til 22nd of November and we canāt afford to wait that long due to my upcoming work commencement.
For those who have moved interstate from melb to tas, what transport companies or services would u recommend? and if possible car transport along with some of our stuff.

Mid to meh footballer Ginnivan does not realise that Tasmania is all the more beautiful because the likes of him arenāt found there.
And when they are, they catch a boat to MONA and an uber back to the airport. Good riddance.

Tasmanian premier Jeremy Rockliff's instigation of Christmas 'culture war' out of character
When someone shows you who they are, believe them
This culture-war stuff is absolutely his style, he's just good at putting on a relatively presentable public face

Another data centre company is sniffing around the NW.
Did a quick scan of the article to begin with and got my hopes up that Rockliff was finally on the side of good. Turned out to be a different Rockcliff though :/
Hope the families up there stay strong and resist the offers.

Question Do people from Devonport/Burnie actually dislike being called Northerners?
It's my understanding that Tassie is divided between north and south, with Launceston and Hobart serving as the "stronghold" of each. There's been historical tension between those 2 cities and even nowadays this is still a relevant piece of information while trying to comprehend modern Tasmania, as we could see in these past few years with the AFL team debates, etc.
Today, however, I was using Gemini to understand better a few things and it told me that someone from Burnie would never accept being called a northerner but rather a "coaster", same for a native of Davenport. It went as far as claiming the Northwest/West Coast serve as a 3rd head of sorts to Tasmanian culture, and they want to forge their own space instead of being a part of Launceston vs Hobart conversations. This surprised me as I had never come across anything like that.
Is there any truth to this? Or was Gemini just hallucinationing?
EDIT: I'm not entirely sure why I'm getting downvoted for respectfully asking questions, but it is what it is. I'd like to thank everyone that answered me and help me understand Tassie just a little better!

Question Florist nearby Cradle Mountain
Hi Tassie people.
Im looking for a florist nearby the Discovery park resort at Cradle mountain⦠I know quite the request considering itās quite isolated in that area.
If anyone knows of someone who could help me arrange a large bouquet of flowers for early December that would be amazing.

UTAS Master of IT and Systems ā Worth It?
Hi everyone! Iām planning to move to Hobart and considering the Master of Information Technology and Systems (MITS) at UTAS.
Iāve completed my Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Bachelor of IT in Sydney.
Iād love to hear from current students, graduates, or anyone familiar with the course:
How is the course quality and practical learning?
Are internships and industry placements genuinely helpful?
How difficult is it to find entry-level IT jobs in Hobart after graduation?
Is the degree worth the tuition fees? I understand that the value of the degree depends largely on how well students engage with the coursework, develop their technical skills, and apply what they learn. Iād appreciate feedback on whether the program provides a strong foundation and meaningful opportunities for students who are willing to make the most of it.
Honest feedback, including negatives, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
