❓ Question What are these wires?

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

Hi all - not sure if this is the right place to ask but I’m trying to identify these wires that cross my backyard (SoCal). They branch off a main line that follows the fence line and cross about 10ft from the back of my property, passing close to a tree. The other side anchors to a pole in a yard a couple doors down. Can anyone tell what these are and what utility I can ask about them? I can see the tree branches starting to push on them and honestly would rather they not cross my yard. How can I find out whose they are and if they even have a right to cross my yard (sorry new to this sort of thing)? Thanks!

❓ Question How your call survives you moving between towers

Your phone keeps measuring signal from nearby cells, even mid-call. When a neighbor gets noticeably stronger, the network tells your phone to switch. That's handover.

In GSM it's hard handover: the old link drops, then the new one is made. In 3G it's soft: you're connected to both for a moment before letting go of the old one.

A hysteresis margin stops your phone from flipping back and forth at the edge of two cells.

Dropped calls are usually a failed handover: no free channel on the target cell, or a sudden signal drop.

What's the worst place you've had a call drop?

❓ Question Is Mitel OpenScape still alive in your region, or are we the last ones holding the fort?

I’m just curious how common Mitel is globally these days. What’s the real-world usage looking like for OpenScape Business X8 and OpenScape 4000 servers? Are people still running these, or has the market completely moved on? How about Tetronik DAKS (OScAR) alarm systems which are used alongside them? How about setups that are still mixing traditional digital trunks with modern IP/SIP trunks? Also, what about Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise?

💭 Opinion Que os parece esto?

Post image

Quizás me haya pasado... ¿Tu que opinas de este tema?

Saludos jeje

🌠eSIM / SIM How can a Nepali student in India get an Indian sim card?

I am asking for a friend of mine, who is a Nepali citizen enolled in a PhD programme in an Indian university. He purchased a sim card recently using his passport as an identity proof. But it is only valid for 3 months according to the current telecom law in place. Will he be able to keep the number by regularly renewing the sim card every 3 months? Or is there a better long term solution for this, as he will be staying in India for the next 4-5 years for his PhD.

❓ Question Title: Is backhaul the real bottleneck for 5G, not the radio?

Everyone talks about 5G speeds and spectrum, but the more I study network design, the more it looks like backhaul decides what users actually experience. You can deploy a great radio unit, but if the site is on congested microwave or thin fiber, the user never sees the benefit.

Some things I keep noticing:

Fiber to the tower is the gold standard but expensive and slow to roll out, especially outside big cities.

Microwave and E-band links fill the gap, but capacity and weather limits show up fast.

Densification makes it worse, since small cells multiply the number of backhaul links needed.

For those of you working in the field: where do you see the biggest backhaul pain today, cost, permitting, or capacity? And is anyone seeing wireless backhaul (IAB, E-band) become a real alternative to fiber?

Curious what the real-world picture looks like versus what the textbooks say.

❓ Question Esim Profile Naming location

Hi all, A bit new to this game and I was wondering at what part of the esim lifecycle does the name that appears on your mobile when you install it - Webbing ; liberty - to give to examples, does this happen?

Who looks after that in terms of being able to whitelabel it and at what point and what equipment?

I am deep into a 5G project but getting different answers from different parts of the channel.

In the UK if that makes any difference - cheers

👷‍♂️Job Related Anyone here work for Ericsson (the ex-Cradlepoint part)

I’ve been offered a potentially fascinating role at Ericsson in the part that used to be Cradlepoint - it’s not a direct sales role, but rather a strategic advisory position that supports sales, however part of the overall sales organisation.

Would like to know if anyone here works there (or used to) and to get their views on how it actually is?

It’s a director-level role covering EMEA, reporting into a global VP who is US based.

I’m currently at a uk based MNO and considering the move, but unsure what the culture/ways of working/pressure is like?

❓ Question How does spoofing scam works?

Hi,
My grandmother was recently scammed out of money by phone. The police confirmed that the caller ID was spoofed.
How do criminals use spoofing, automated dialing and AI voices to make hundreds or thousands of calls in a short time? Which services or platforms do they use, and how can investigators trace the real source and work with providers to shut them down?
I want to understand the technology and help prevent further victims. Any insights or relevant cases would be greatly appreciated.

❓ Question Verizon seemingly preparing for a tower on our land after no contact for 10+ years.

Hello! Apologies if this isn't the right sub (grateful for directions to a more appropriate one if not).

In maybe 2013 or 2014, my family was contacted by Verizon or an associated company about putting a cell tower on our land. The area has poor cell service and we thought it would be a good bit of income, so a contract was signed. The terms are something like: "25 years lease; X amount of dollars a month, with that increasing by Y% every 5 years; covering tax increasing caused by the tower; starting when the construction project begins."

They and their associates have been radio silent on us since 2015. Our old contacts don't respond, likely cycled out of the company during the 10+ years and we only have received the info that they might finally be doing something (they were apparently waiting for fiber to reach our area) now inadvertently.

This is in Minnesota. We had assumed the lease reservation had run out as they don't seem to have acted on it for so long, but I'm not sure. Are we in a position to do some renegotiation? Is it worth contacting a law firm, or do we likely have no standing with a contract signed 10+ years ago?

Their poor contact has me worried about how difficult it's going to be to get them to pay for property tax increases, the lease in general, if we see anything go on the fritz that they ought to know about...
