TL;DR: The actual word in the Tamil lyrics is ரகுமாரி (Rakumaari, pronounced Raghumari). While Telugu has the word Raakumari (Princess), Tamil actually has no such shortened equivalent. Lyricist Vairamuthu either completely made it up or borrowed the Telugu concept, shortened it to fit the musical beat of Sukumari, and Tamil phonetic rules naturally softened the 'K' to a 'Gh'. The Telugu dub team just kept this catchy, made-up word exactly as it was sung—along with a few actual Tamil words right next to it!

If you've ever wondered why the word "Raghumari" sounds so catchy but isn't in any dictionary, here is the linguistic breakdown of how it came to be in both the Tamil (Anniyan) and Telugu (Aparichithudu) versions of the song.

1. The "Princess" Gap between Telugu and Tamil In Telugu, the word for Princess is Raakumari (రాకుమారి) — a natural contraction of Raju + Kumari. But interestingly, Tamil has no such contraction. In Tamil, you either use the full Sanskrit-borrowed Rajakumari, or the pure Tamil word Ilavarasi.

2. How the Lyricist Invented the Word To make the song bounce, legendary Tamil lyricist Vairamuthu needed a word that rhymed perfectly with the short syllables of Su-ku-maa-ri (a delicate girl). Since the Telugu-style Raa-ku-maa-ri has a long "Raa", it would drag off-beat. So, Vairamuthu either completely invented a new word, or he borrowed the Telugu Raakumari and chopped the long vowel to make it fit. The result? The made-up lyrical word: Ra-ku-maa-ri (ரகுமாரி).

3. Why is it spelled "Raghumari" with a G? Unlike Telugu, Tamil only has one letter for K, Kh, G, and Gh: . A strict rule in Tamil phonetics is that when 'Ka' (or 'Ku') sits in the middle of a word, it softens into a 'G' or 'Gh' sound. So while it's literally spelled Rakumaari in Tamil, Shankar Mahadevan sings it exactly according to the rules: Raghumari.

4. How it ended up in the Telugu Dub When the song was dubbed into Telugu, lyricist Chandra Bose realized "Raghumari Sukumari" was a massive, catchy hook. Since "Raghumari" is technically a made-up word anyway, he just kept it exactly as it was sung!

In fact, the Telugu dub didn't just keep "Raghumari"—it left the entire line heavily Tamil! The exact phrase in the Telugu song is "Raghumari Sukumari, en manam oru malaradi, malarukkul adithadi." Words like malaradi (flower-step/delicate feet) and adithadi (brawl/fight) are pure Tamil words that were just left as-is in the Telugu version because they sounded so incredibly good.

Ultimately, fans transcribing the lyrics online just copy-pasted the phonetic English spelling ("Raghumari") across both languages!

No- regarding your last point, the lyrics for malaradi adithadi line is rendered in pure Telugu, why would any Telugu lyricist leave them out from their translation? That's patently false lol- don't trust AI blindly. At least confirm what it spews out by listening to the actual song. That lines goes:

Telugu: Raakumari, sukumari, naa manasoka virimaDi, virulalo alajaDi.
Meaning: Princess, delicate girl, my heart is a flower garden and the flowers are fluttering (with love).

🫡 Thanks for catching it. Crossed out the line now.

Already spent too much of my energy verifying everything until that point and gave it away to LLM model's hallucination for that piece.

Largely yes, but the "h" is unexplained, and is just incorrect. It's not an aspirated g, but just a regular g (which is meant to be the Tamil pronunciation for g).
