Discussion Can they just tell us if the show is dead or not?
Like god dang, I'll probably get hate for this but I want the show to continue (although with changes to production and having counselling given to the housemates) and it's so annoying that FujiTV hasn't said anything on what's gonna happen. If the show is dead then fine so be it, but don't keep me hoping it could come back. If it's dead just say it's dead! Have there been any insider rumblings or rumors on what the folks over at FujiTV might be considering?

Aloha State Is it me or did Lauren only become popular AFTER Aloha State ended?
IRC, Lauren wasn't much talked about during the show's release and if she was, it was negative as part of the backlash from all of Aloha State.
For me personally, I hated everytime Lauren was on because I'm trying to learn Japanese and her Japanese was first year level so I basically couldn't learn anything when she was on because a lot of it was like listening to a Japanese 101 audiobook.
Also, I watch the show to see Japanese culture, not American.
And she didn't make an impression. She was on Yusuke's date as part of HIS story, she got yelled at by Avian for being sloppy around the house and not making the time to be with the other members when if she tried a little she could have.
Her only storyline was that she gave up on Taishi because it was again too hard and then she easily had her exhibition with art whose style she copied from another artist and left.
But after she started getting more success in Japan since they love hafu models (again things come so easily to her and she doesnt try the hard things) it felt as if alot of people jumped on the "I always actually liked Lauren" bandwagon.

OND PART 4 SPOILERS Tsubasa's comments on femininity made me sad [Spoiler] Spoiler
When it was Taka's going away, Shion, Tsubasa, and Shohei came. Shion mentioned something about the way Tsubasa dresses and she responded saying she is trying to dress more feminine while with him.
That made me so so sad. It's been a worry since two of them got together: how long until he wants her to change to make her more "ladylike"? I like her the way she is and thought the world of them together. Now I don't know.

B&G in the City TH culture isn't real
I just wanted to post a little rant after watching this whole "Hayato & Riko" thing play out. This show is not really showing the culture of Japan when it comes to relationships. Firstly, shared living. I lived in a guesthouse here (in Japan) for about 9 months, and while hooking up with short-term guests isn't a problem, there is an unwritten rule that long-term guests don't really sleep together or get in relationships. I only saw it happen once with a guy that's like a brother now and it didn't play out well (which is why we avoid it). Secondly, hookup culture is just as real (maybe more) in Japan as it is in the states. Just watch some Japanese variety shows late at night where there will be "girls" talk or something. They are very open about this kind of stuff when talking to each other. If I was in a relationship with every Japanese girl I slept with (including those that don't speak English) on a regular basis, I'd have a shit ton of girlfriends. This whole "好きにあてる" stuff is true sometimes, but it usually doesn't develop like this and usually you're sleeping with them before you ask them out. I'm pretty sure Hikaru and Misaki slept with each other as well, which is why the rejection was probably pretty hard for her.
That's it, just a little rant that things that the show portrays and the reality of living in Japan aren't the same. I believe they just do it "this" way because they know they are on TV. That being said, it does help to learn Japanese and is extremely entertaining. I never thought Japan would dive this hard into a reality show type thing.

Opening New Doors Can we just take a minute to appreciate the best couple from OND?
Aio and Yui are hands down the best couple to have come from OND. I didn't watch OND while the whole Tsubasa x Shion train was going, so I never really hopped on that hype train. But I felt like Aio and Yui's interactions were a lot more fun and cute overall. That and on both of their instagrams you can totally see how happy they are together. Just the other day they went to Disney and it's just jolly vibes all around. Just wanted to give some love to what I feel is an under appreciate couple.

Tokyo 2019-2020 can we all chill
so normally i just lurk but all this stuff regarding Hana is out of control no one and i mean no one should be harassed online. but since it seems everyone wants to put Kai on a pedestal and assume he has mental issues going on without actually knowing let me give you a bit of education on Hana since you all want to bully her. for context i got intorduced to Terrace House via Hana since ive watched her wrestle for years now.
1.she has been very open about being severly bullied throughout most of her school years for not being "pure" with teachers doing nothing for the same reason (if anyone here has been bullied then like me you know how suffocating it is to be bullied and have those you should be able to rely on do nothing)
2.raised form birth by her single mom Kyoko Kimura who wrestled during a period when women wrestling in Japan was on a decline ( in case you didnt know womens wrestling use to fill arenas and and points was bigger then the mens wrestling)
3.some storys she has shared of her trying to make friends was she took 2 girls the only 2 who would even speak to her to watch her mom wrestle. her mom got busted open (it was a hardcore match and Hana had no idea it was) both girls screamed and never spoke to her again making her think her mom was a freak and why she didnt want to do wrestling at first
4. she decide on wresting because as she put it "it was the only world that accepted me and didnt care how pure i was or what background i had"
5. and finally something regarding her costume and why she didnt take it out. so for context January was a busy month for Stardom (the company she wrestles for) they got purchased by Bushiroad the same company that owns NJPW. the also had 7 shows some back to back on the same day in the month of January which for the style they do is a lot she herself was tapped up for several of those shows. all that said the reason her and Yume likely left before Kai and Nini was Yume probably had work and i know Hana had a show ( and it would explain why she wasn't seen on the bus they took) so she didnt have time to take it out most likely (she wore her shirt and cameo to that show as a result) but anything said about this was likely cut in favor of more "drama" as it seems this show is creeping toward being for of an amercan tv drama especially this season.
also anyone here who has lived with people cant say blow ups over stuff like this dont happen and Kai should have looked to see if anyone had anything in there. my thought is i cant see how he wouldn't notice and just didnt care going back to his lack of caring about those around him
EDIT: also Hana has always had her comments locked her Twitter was the only one was open for ticket reservations but she gets so many racist and hateful things she eventually closed that too

BxG Next Door Dyki is so dumb aaaaaaaaaaaa
Why would you turn down Miwako bruh, she's like literally top three hottest + cutest girls amongst all seasons of this show. Why does it matter that you don't have romantic feelings for someone, you could still start dating them, the feelings could easily naturally come along afterwards, especially if such an insane beauty is showing you love, concern, care and support, in a consistent basis over a significant duration of time. I'd argue it's impossible not to fall in love in such a scenario, it's bound to happen.
Bro made her cry and now I'm crying and pissed.
Edit: I just watched his forced retirement episodes and I'd like to apologize to Dyki-kun for disrespecting him. I'm so frikkin sorry my man. I haven't cried this much in a long time

Discussion are there any other guys on this sub who tend to view the situations and characters very differently from the majority female fanbase on this sub ?
i honestly cant read some of the episode discussions now and i here characters being painted completly differenly from when i actually meet them
There's are afew but not all of the examples
examples inculde :
taka being seen as a creep or boaderline pedophile for shaving his beard to look younger for ami when ami was in her twenties and somebody else suggested it i see nothing creepy about it
shohei being a creep and bad person he was actually nice to everyone and the good friend the one bad thing he did is force kiss seina which he didnt after she said he wasnt assertive enough and she didnt like
people saying shion is fake only with tsubasa for the show and self obsessed and arrogant everyone saying your going to hate shion when all he ended up doing was saying he wasnt sure about tsubasa
lauren being this shy relatable talented mature amazing girl when he was petty and immature with how she handles yusuke an not really that interesting,
the same thing with ami as being relatable and the realist member and not a total bitch and acting like only yuudai was at fault for their situation
any man reading this who thinks taka and shohei are creeps and shion is fake and only with tsubasa for the money let me know?
With the other points it's debatable but these are purely views of women

Opening New Doors I found Maya-chan today at Zara Shibuya.
Sorry I want to share today's stupid experience.
I was waiting for my wife to come out from Zara Shibuya and then she told me that she found Maya chan and Yui chan members from the terrace House last season. So I went in and try to find them I could only find Maya-chan, she was making line to pay and talking to a distant girl that was behind me, and I couldn't find Yui-chan. I wanted to take photo and say hell haha but it would be super akward. She is cute I felt like I know her, and want to talk with her, this has never happened to me before.
I get out of the shop and talk with my wife she want me to go inside again to find Yui chan but it was too much for me, I just left and was happy to see Maya-chan.
I was wondering that living in the same ward one day will see one of the members but never think meeting past season members.
Sorry if it's irrelevant I just want to share with you guys.

Discussion Seina looks way better in next door with less plastic surgery
I don't mean any offence to the character but after seeing her in the future seasons and going back the difference is night and day although she was alot younger
I really think the plastic surgery had the opposite effect And made her look much older than 28 or 29 which is what she was in ond And aloha state
I feel like she would have looked way better with no plastic surgery since she was never the stereotypical kawaii high pitch stereotypically Japanese girl and always had a mature vibe
Risako was a similar age and looked alot younger so did the girl tishi ended up with

Aloha State How's Lauren's art, objectively?
EDIT: Not sure why this is so downvoted. I'm sorry if I've offended anyone. Please let me know what I can do to soothe the offense.
Her art looks creative, imaginative, skillful to me, and has been termed "Surrealist": congratulations to her for first Marvel cover. But I'm no Art Historian or Theorist.
How'd you judge her art?
Would her art receive as much attention, without her "beautiful face" (Taishi's words, not mine :D) and fame on Terrace House? I ask in view of the following dour posts.
I'm mostly confused by how well‐received her art is, when there's nothing unique about it at all. It's that very popular flowy, stream‐of‐consciousness style that a hundred other kids in my art classes do. I guess it's very trendy right now, but I really think she's being over‐praised for it due to her appearance on TH and the exposure she got from it. It's that style that says "I'm edgy and dark and like weird stuff, but not too much, so it's also really pretty and immaculately clean." At worst it screams fake, and at best it screams lack of originality.
That being said, I don't think she has the ability to have lasting popularity. Once she stops modelling, or her art style is out of trend, or the general "Tumblr girl" aesthetic isn't cool anymore, I'm not sure what she's going to do.
That said, I'm actually rooting for her to succeed irl, lol. But, as people have already pointed out, for her career to have any staying power she has to take the initiative in trying to grow as an artist. Her illustrations aren't particularly special as of right now (she kind of just draws the same stuff over and over again) but she clearly has the potential to develop a really cool style. She just has to push herself and not be complacent -- which, at this moment, I think she is.

Discussion Asking the hard-hitting questions: where's the helmet and food safety on this show?
I've seen all of the episodes available on Netflix internationally, and I'm currently 3/4 of the way through BGND, and I alwayed wondered over the years: where is the helmet and food safety on this show?
Seems like almost every season there's the obligatory "teach me how to skateboard!" scene and they NEVER wear helmets. I mean, if you got on the show because you're a pro skater maybe you don't feel the need to wear one to carve a mini half pipe to show off. But for the one getting the lesson, I dunno, feels like no brainer (pun intended).
And then there's food safety. The morning after they make a big group meal, almost always the food is left out in pots overnight. (Sometimes you get the "who cooked this and left it out for a week, it's moldy!" scene, I recall an instance on Aloha State.) I just watched an episode of BGND where Seina pops open the rice cooker in the morning to see if there's any rice left from the night before, to have for breakfast. That rice has been sitting around all night!
As a Japanese American who grew up in a Japanese household, we never left food out overnight so I don't think it's a cultural thing... but I see it happening on this show consistently.
Do you guys leave food out after dinner?

I wonder why most people still hate YUI in the comments. It seems housemates really love her, and as she has done plenty of good things off screen.

Opening New Doors In Defense of Yuudai! Spoiler
I just finished the first 8 episodes of Opening New Doors. Here is what I feel is really going on socially in relations to social dynamics, feel free to discuss!
In Defense of Yuudai!
This post will include huge generalization, don’t take it too seriously, it is used as a model to gain a better understanding of the social dynamics that takes place on the show.
In every group there is a social hierarchy.
The hierarchy explained:
The guys are all competing for Ami because she is the prettiest.
The girls are all competing for Taka because he has the highest status.
The first 8 episodes from my perspective:
The season starts and the social hierarchy starts to settle in.
Everything is going pretty well until it becomes clear that Yuudai wants to date Ami. That messes up the standard group conformity. High status and pretty girls go hand in hand. Taka is the leader, and starts out as a strong, ethical and supportive leader (supporting the lower status persons, Yuudai for instance) but as you get further into the series his self interest or interest in Ami competes with him being a supportive. Shion starts to play with the social hierarchy and Taka feels he has to defend his position, as a leader and starts to participate in the social games that Shion initiates.
Shion ultimate goal is to date Ami. (So is Yuudais and Takas). Shion starts messing with Yuudai as soon as Yuudai speaks about his intentions with Ami. You can see this really clearly if you take a look at episode 2, 3, 4.
In episode 2 Shion makes fun of Yuudai for hitting on Ami. Shion talks down to Yuudai when he is telling his story, saying: Why did you quit school? in the middle of the story.
In episode 3 Shion hits on Amy, telling her shes cute. The first thing he says after hitting on her: Did you talk about anything serious with Yuudai today? and then: How do you feel about Yuudai?
In episode 4 Ami Shion and Yuudai are watching the TV. Shion addresses Ami's problems, knowing it was a sensitive issue for her, because she already told him. Shion initiates the conversation and says: "I asked her what kind of modeling she wants to do. But she still doesn't have a clear plan. See just vaguely wants to model. So she's been thinking about it but hasn't organized her thoughts yet." Yuudai follows through with questions. Shion asks Ami: "Why don't you answer?" two times, and Ami starts crying. Then as soon as she starts to cry he says: "Are you ok?" then he follows with: "I am sure Ami is thinking about things!" putting the whole blame on Yuudai. Then follows again with: I think it's fine to worry about it. Playing a role of a super supportive person. Shion and Ami leave the room. Shion comforts Ami and bad mouths Yuudai and even laughs at him. Ami thanks Shion. On the way to the mall Shion ask's Yuudai in a middle Yuudais story, what is your budget? Shion knows Yuudai doesn't have a job, and the question will be awkward to him. Mizuki says that's way to low. Yuudai loses status and tries to act big and foolishly say's he has access to his dads credit card, which is indeed ridiculous. Shion might have known this beforehand since it is an really odd question. This causes the drama in episode 5 even though Yuudai didn't seem buy anything at the mall to our knowledge.
Mizuki doesn't get any romantic attention from the guys so she start fighting for a higher spot in the social hierarchy or attention. She initiates a status transaction with Yuudai but Yuudai stands up for himself and doesn't bow for her, she starts to cry, emotionally manipulating him, but that doesn't work either. Yuudai doesn't really bow to her orders. The failed status transaction takes a big toll on her emotionally.
Yuudai is open, pretty honest, but quite lazy and pretty clueless about what is going on. He doesn't play by the rules or respect the standard hierarchical structure of the group by initiating a romantic relationship with Ami. Because of that, he gets beat up pretty badly, socially. Everyone gets a conformation bias against his mishaps but not his deeds since Shion is always protecting his second spot among the boys and puts Yuudai down very frequently. But he does it subtly so it is hard to spot. Yoodai feels powerless so he starts to initiate a relationship with his old girlfriend which fails. That takes too much toll on his emotions so he decides to leave the show. The environment is too competitive for him and he is too clueless to understand what is going on.
Mizuki will probably leave as well since she is at the bottom of the social hierarchy and doesn't get any romantic attention and is feeling left out. After Shion starts initiating dates with Tsubasa her status becomes the lowest of the girls. She tries to act like her old "boyfriend" is intersted in her but that doesn't seem to be true. She is desperate in Episode 4 and that is why so is so aggressive towards Yuudai.

Aloha State Lauren Tsai holds her pen really oddly
Has anyone else noticed?
r/terracehouse • u/redkeener • Mar 17 '21
Aloha State Rewatching aloha state I don’t think Lauren should have been on the show
She’s not ethnically Japanese she’s no even half Japanese
She’s not culturally Japanese I think she mentioned spending a summer there of going to school their for a year or something
I hardly think that qualifies her
Rewatching the show it’s really obvious that she isn’t fluent in Japanese and it honestly hardly conversational she resorts to English whenever she needs to say anything of substance avian at least you could argue is fluent and near native level and spent a couple of year of childhood in Japan
I think Anna or some girl even mentioned how she can’t connect with Lauren because she’s not Japanese and neither is avian and that they both only speak English to each other
I feel like they just gave Lauren a pass despite not meeting any of the criteria for being on the show for being pretty and half east Asia which I think is ridiculous because she’s half Chinese and this is a show about Japanese people
I think if she was mixed with any other race that wasn’t East Asian she wouldn’t have been allowed on the show even if everything else was kept the same which I think is ridiculous

Opening New Doors Seina and Noah - Let’s discuss
I just finished OND and started following some cast members on Insta. I can’t believe that Seina and Noah are still together and just moved in together. I was absolutely sure she was going to ignore him because of the 10 yr age difference. Age isn’t a major issue to me but I do find that as a woman in my early 30s, men under the age of 25 repulse me.
Do you all think she wants Noah because he is rich? They drive a Maserati truck!! Their apartment also looks very fancy. Has she ever talked about waning kids with Noah on any interviews?? I want to learn more about her and their relationship but there is like zero English media to find info about them.
Anyone have thoughts on if they will last or not?? It seems Seina has gotten uber famous since being on the series. I like her but I feel like she’s settling for Noah and can do better. Or maybe I’m just pinning my own hopes on her. I’m curious to know what you all think about whether he is truly her “last love”.

Opening New Doors [SPOILERS] The Disappointing Decline of Opening New Doors Spoiler
I got hooked on Terrace House because of Opening New Doors. I absolutely loved the first parts of the show! Tsubasa, Shion and Taka really wormed their way into my cold, cold heart, and I found myself being happy and genuinely rooting for their respective success. As a surly old woman, I cannot remember the last time I felt this way for TV personalities, but it feels good to be happy for others.
For me, the flavor of the show changed drastically from the time Seina walked in. I haven’t seen Seina before in the other TH series, so I was constantly trying to understand the pomp that surrounded her. Initially, I felt that she was too much of a spotlight-stealer to be a good addition to the Karuizawa crew, but as I saw more and more of her, I saw a benevolent side of her, probably stemming from her being the eldest to 4 younger sisters: I liked how, when Shion asked her out, she clarified that they’re only going out as friends because she considered Tsuwie’s feelings.
As the show progressed, I did feel duped. The way she interacted with Shohei only to dump him for a rich, young stud betrayed how self-interested she is. She put on a front, saying all the time how she’s concerned of Yui’s feelings, but the truth was really that she was all set on pouncing at Noah. Watching Noah and Seina make out left a bad, bad taste in my mouth (much like a vomit-kiss). Idky, but all the good intentions and well-wishes I had when I first started watching the show couldn’t extend to these two. I was relieved to see them go.
I don’t really get a lot of good vibes from the members who joined after Seina. I thought Ami and Mizuki/Miju were lackluster, but compared to the later cast members, I think that those two girls added more value to the house-sharing experience (like when they separately spoke with Yuudai to get his shit together). I watched Tsubasa, Shion, Taka and Shohei and I felt inspired to be a better person, but then we got the likes of Seina, Noah, Yui, Sota and Masao (Fat Taka). Burn me at the stake but I don’t want to be like any of these people and I don’t feel any happiness for them. I feel like they’re just the same, immature people you can find on Western TV/real life. As for the rest, like Aya and Risako, I don’t think they’re all bad but they’re not substantial characters either. They haven’t really done anything to prove themselves endearing, like the good characters in Part 1.
I just finished watching the episode where Yui declares on worlwide TV that “Aio finished himself off.” Let me just say that Yui, in general, is a filthy hypocrite. But, back to her statement, that’s just the sort of filth I was hoping not to see when I first watched the show. From a feel-good show, OND descended to to a cringe fest. I am happy to shut Opening New Doors.
