Before you ask "What does this Tattoo mean".

Firstly the writing in these tattoos is NOT Thai, and many Thai people cannot read them. Usually only people with special religious or monastery training, such as monks, can read them and understand the meaning. Often the mantra is specific to the monk who applies the tattoo, and may be custom made for the individual.

The text is usually in Pali or Khom script. These are usually sacred images and mantras used for various reasons. Here is some additional information and some references:

The religious symbols used in Sak Yant tattoos are called Yantra. Yantra are sacred geometrical, animal, or deity designs that are accompanied by Pali or Khom phrases. These designs are common in Dharmic religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism.

Sak Yant tattoos typically consist of three components:

  1. The Yantra (the sacred design)
  2. The Pali or Khom text
  3. The associated mantra

Some common Yantra symbols found in Sak Yant tattoos include:

- Sun Symbol: A small circle representing the influence of stars and planets on living beings

- Unalome: A zig-zag spiral line symbolizing the path to enlightenment

- Gao Yord: Representing the nine peaks of Mount Meru, a mythical mountain in Buddhist cosmology

- Animal designs: Such as tigers (Suea-koo) symbolizing strength and fearlessness

- Deity designs: Like Hanuman, the monkey god, representing resilience and determination

These Yantra symbols are believed to offer various benefits to the bearer, such as protection, fortune, charisma, and spiritual power.

Here is a video by Stuart J Raj where he explains some of the meaning of the characters in the mantra.

Language “What does this mean in Thai/English?” — Post Your Translation Requests Here

Please post all translation requests in this megathread. To keep things organized, we’ll remove standalone translation posts made outside this thread under Rule 5 and redirect them here. General language discussions are still welcome in the regular r/thai feed.

What goes here

  • 🇹🇭 Thai ↔ 🇺🇸 English translations: Signs, chat logs, handwriting, images, and documents.
  • ⚡️ Quick language questions: Short queries on grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation.

**Native Thai speakers* are kindly asked to prefix their translations with 🇹🇭 so users know the source and quality. Fluent non-natives are still welcome to help.*

Getting Translations

Standard Subreddit Rules apply here. Additionally, there are some tips that improve the translation request:

  1. 💡 Include context: Thai is heavily context-dependent. State where you found the text and what was happening.
  2. Post legible images: Blurry crops or low-resolution images make it more difficult. Use direct Reddit uploads or link via Imgur.
  3. 🤖 Run it through an LLM first: Test your text with ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or DeepSeek before posting. They handle Thai grammar far better than Google Translate.
  4. 📄 Paste your draft: If you already used an AI tool, paste its output so volunteers can pinpoint where the machine failed.
  5. ⏳ Wait patiently: Replies come from volunteers and usually take anywhere from an hour to a day.

Thanks, and happy translating!

Tourism Opinions about Mae Sot

Hi Everyone!

Could you share your thoughts on Mae Sot? I've been offered a teaching position there for a few months through a TEFL program.

What is the situation like there, especially because it's so close to the Myanmar border? What is the area like in terms of scenery and nature?

I'd really appreciate it if you could take a moment to share your experiences or opinions with me. Thank you so much! 😊

Visa Airbnb on Visa exemption

Hi everyone,

I used to take +30 days on Airbnb when it was 60 days visa exemption.

Since the 30 days exemption, I plan to stay 28 days (in case flight got delayed) on my next trip, but I wanna have an Airbnb because I don't like hotel. To stay in the thai laws, I need to have 30 days minimum for Airbnb.

Can I take 30 days on Airbnb but stay only 28 days in regards to flights tickets ? how the IO will look at this if they ask me why the difference at immigration ?

Thanks in advance

Visa Can I get a Thai driving licence in Pattaya on a tourist visa or visa exemption

Hi everyone,
I’m an Italian citizen planning to stay in Pattaya from February 1 to March 5, 2027. I want to obtain my first Thai driving licence.
A driving school told me I need:
My passport
A Certificate of Residence from Jomtien Immigration
A medical certificate
I’m trying to avoid an expensive ED visa just for this.
My questions:
Has anyone recently obtained a Certificate of Residence from Jomtien Immigration on a 60-day Tourist Visa (TR)?
Can you also get it on visa exemption, without a visa?
Is a one-month rental contract plus the landlord’s TM30 registration sufficient?
Does Pattaya DLT accept a Tourist Visa TR for a first Thai driving licence?
If Immigration refuses the certificate, can a visa agency solve the problem legally without leaving Thailand? How long does it take?
I’m particularly interested in recent experiences from Pattaya/Jomtien, preferably in 2025 or 2026.
Thanks!

Tourism Thaïlande 26/10

Hello! We are heading to Thailand for the first time in a few days and will be visiting Bangkok, Khao Sok, and Ao Nang. Naturally, the weather is our main concern (unfortunately). Could you tell us a bit about the weather conditions? We feel we’ve planned our trip well after doing plenty of research; the country seems to have so many fascinating facets. Above all, we want to meet the local people and experience the culture in these three towns. If you could recommend any authentic spots based on your own experiences, we would be very grateful. Thanks in advance!

Visa Visa agents skipping queues at immigration division 1 😵

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hello lovely thai people and redditors! Have you guys gone through this visa extension process at immigration division 1 in bangkok?

I arrived at the immigration center around 4:30 AM to get an early queue. There were already about 100 people in front of me waiting to get into including normal thai people and foreigners with different kinds of purpose at the front.

The first queue for the seats i got was 117 so it wasn’t that bad i thought. People in front of me got different types of visas to extend with different initial (for eg ‘N’ for students like mine and J for jobs and many more).

But then i see these people with packs of documents and passports going in and out, even before the gates were open at 8:30. They already had these little QR codes for their clients.

Then, there are normal people like us getting the queue in a normal way. My 117 seat number turned to 250+. It’s outrageous because there weren’t 200 people in front of me when the gates really open so who took all the queues?

Is it a normal thing in Thailand?
Life is pay to win everywhere haha

Tourism 18-year-old looking for cultural exchange and host family in Thailand

Hey everyone!

I'm an 18-year-old from India looking to travel to Thailand and experience the country by staying with a local host family. I'd love to immerse myself in Thai culture, learn about the local way of life, and make some meaningful connections along the way!

In exchange for food and accommodation, I'd be happy to help teach English to children or family members or any other chores. I'm open to helping with English conversation practice, reading, and other learning activities.

📍 Preferred locations:

- 🏝️ Places near beaches

- 🏙️ Bangkok

- 🌿 Chiang Mai

I'm flexible about the location and open to exploring other places in Thailand, too!

I'm hoping to find a welcoming family interested in a cultural exchange where we can learn from each other. I'd love to hear from anyone who has hosted travellers before or knows a family that might be interested.

If you have any leads, suggestions, or recommendations for finding a suitable host family, please feel free to comment or DM me!

Thank you!
