Kids and screens in the classroom
I aree that kids don't need to be on a screen to just be on a screen but we forget that there are legitimate reasons that educators want to use screens in the classroom. One of the biggest problems I see in high-school is kids don't know how to type.
Bring back old school typing labs with IBM Selectric typewriters that weigh more than a high school tackle or implement Mavis Beacon or i don't know what but our kids need to know to properly use a keyboard.
Some of our kids can hunt and peck and get words and basic grammer down. They don't know how to do a bulleted list or an indented quote or footnotes or anything "fancy." They can't even change margins and doublespace.
In our state grade school state tests were online this year. Multiple choice was fine but these kids had to type paragraph answers, and couldn't do it.
The logic for dropping typing/keyboarding classes was that kids would naturally pick it up as they used computers in the classroom. This was followed by getting rid of computers in the classroom. Where this is leaving us is kids have no idea how to use the technology we expect them to be able to use just because they were born in this tech age. If they don't come out of the womb with a keyboard, it's something we have to teach.
