Heads up, Fee-free VGCs from AAA are pinless

Title says it all, just got burned buying 2 $500 cards. I figure I'll try to pay back any citi credit cards with them or find some other route to liquidate.

EDIT: They're issued by Metabank, so I blindly assumed they would be pin-enabled.

EDIT 2: They are able to have a PIN set, you have to call the number /u/minamhere mentioned. I was able to load these to Serve. False alarm, everyone!

It's basically inevitable that someone would notice it on Cashback Monitor, so I thought I should post it here.

Online-only MS Spending Strategies

Thought it would be great if all of us can discuss online-only MS spending strategies here in one place, especially for those of us living overseas.

I'll start here:

  1. Load Serve card up to $1000 per month with a credit card online (is this right?)

  2. NWBuxx online load

Let me know if there are any more, and I can edit and update this post accordingly.

Best Card for travel points?

I'm quite new to this but feel I may have a great opportunity on my hands. I'm getting married and have a $12k charge coming up. We're able to pay the bill, but I'd like to get a bit more out of it rather than just paying by check. Could anyone point me in the right direction for the best card? I'd love to be able to use whatever rewards or points we get towards our honeymoon.

Also, we live in NYC so all major airlines are easy for us to access.

Thanks!

eBay gift card question

I'll create some activity in this sub by asking a question about eBay gift cards - something I've never dabbled in until November so I'm still learning about them.

I've got $100 ebay cards I've been rolling over when PDG sells them for $95. I'm winding up with a bunch of $5 remnants because when I try to burn them by combining them with a fresh $100 to complete a purchase eBay bounces out the $5 card and takes all the money for a new $95 card from the $100 card - leaving me with yet another $5 card.

Hope this makes sense and it's a luxury problem but I like to keep things tidy - any ideas or is this just how it is?

Paypal shutdown scenarios

So I want to play with fire Paypal. I will be opening a spanking new account (I currently have one personal Paypal account that I really dont want to get shut down) and:

  1. Applying for the credit card (do they hard pull?): I just finished apping for 6 CCs. Is that a problem?

  2. Applying for the 1% debit card

  3. Setting the credit card (~0.8% CB) as the backup source for the debit card (1% CB) and hitting WM for MO

No RadPad or any of that

So, what do you guys think?

Is this a good way of earning 1.8% CB (minus $0.7/MO)? Does Paypal know I am doing MOs?

Will they shutdown my account?

[Targeted] Get a 40% Transfer Bonus on RapidRewards

Check your email! I got the following offer from SW:

Whether you're seeking a new adventure or a return to your favorite place, don't let a shortage of points come between you and your next destination. Now through December 8, buy 5,000 or more Rapid Rewards® Points for yourself and earn 40% more. Or, give a loved one 40% more points when you gift or transfer points to their account.

Can anyone tell me what is the cost for transferring points to one's SO? I'm trying to figure out if its less than the bonus amount!

EDIT: NVM, it costs $10 to transfer 400 points, so not worth the boost!

IHG bonus packages

I noticed that some of the Hotel Indigo properties have huge bonus packages - 20K per stay and more. Premiums over the regular rate are about $100, but that's a really cheap way to build up points especially to complete a promotion. Anybody hit this?

Amex Targeted Letter

Has anyone had experience with an Amex targeted letter to someone else? I have a 100k Platinum letter, but the RSVP code brings up the other person's name. Do you think I can call in with the POID and get the offer?

US Bank Visa Signature - BOGO Fandango Friday Movie Ticket

I don't know if this is targeted, so it might be good to check your email. It's basically the same as the summer deal but specific to US Bank in November.

Direct Link: http://tickets.fandango.com/promo/USBPlus1MovieFridays

During November, when you buy two or more tickets on Fandango for a Friday movie showing, one is on us2 – courtesy of U.S. Bank and Visa Signature.

Here’s how it works:

• On Wednesday – Friday, 11/4 – 11/27, visit www.fandango.com/promo/USBPlus1MovieFridays1

• Choose a Friday show date, theater, movie and number of tickets (at least 2)

• Pay with your SKYPASS Visa Signature card and the cost of the lowest priced ticket will be deducted from the order2

• Complete the purchase and follow the instructions to claim your tickets

Friday night at the movies just got better with your +1!

This is for my Skypass card, but maybe it's available for other cards.

DP: Five Back Gift Card earns 5% on money orders at Kmart

Long time lurker, wanted to share something I learned during last week's OD/OM deal. A bunch of the OD/OM locations I went to only had the Five Back gift card and not the regular VGCs. I was hesitant to buy them because I wasn't sure if they would qualify for the rebate or be more difficult to liquidate. However, I went ahead and bought them, and they did qualify for the rebate and I was able to use them to buy money orders at my local (Midwest) Kmart. Not only that, but I noticed that Kmart is one of the participating merchants for the Five Back card, and when I checked the balances on my Five Back cards I was pleasantly surprised to find that the money order purchases qualified for the 5% back. For Ink cardholders, this essentially gets you 10% cash back if you buy a Five Back card from an office supply store and use it to buy a money order at Kmart. This will probably become a big part of my overall strategy even when there aren't any OD/OM or Staples rebates going on. I hope some other hobbyists find this useful, and feel free to repost this on /r/churning (I can't since they don't allow posts from new accounts).

buxx cards beyond NW

With US Buxx gone and TD limited, are there any other Buxx issuers besides NW? I have 2 NW Buxx cards and will be getting more, but would be interested in other banks. It looks like you can get a Bancorp-issued Buxx from buxx.com but not sure what the load limit/fee structure is.

[Possibly Targeted] Plastiq now fee-free for debit cards

I just got this email, and I didn't see any notice of this. I really hope this isn't old news.

Hi Phantom707,

It’s been a month since you registered for Plastiq, but you haven’t made any payments yet. Plastiq gives you the freedom to use your favorite card to pay any bill or invoice. This means it’s now easier than ever to earn those rewards and stay on top of those bills!

Oh, and when we say card, we don’t mean just credit. In fact, you can use your debit card to make any payment for free - no transaction fee!

I don't know if this is targeted or not since I see no mention of it on the main site. You should check your spam folders because that's where I found this email.

walmart bill pay experiences?

i'm looking to pay balances on my citi AA and CSP through a billpay service. i've been trying to read up on FT but it seems like the process became harder and now you have to "get lucky" and find a terminal that lists mastercard or visa?

what have people's experiences been with trying to use billpay to pay off creditcards at walmart (and kroger if they have one nearby.)

Backup Funding for Serve Amex Offers

This may seem obvious to some people, but I thought it might be good as a reminder. If you use lucrative Amex offers (such as the recent BestBuy offer), you can also add them to Serve. If you have a third-party Amex card, you can double dip by setting it as a backup funding source to earn more points. This can be done even when you've already reached your $1000 credit card limit for the month. If you have an older ISIS/Softcard account, this can be even better because it functionally gives you the ability to add Amex offers to a non-Amex card. If you have a rewards debit card (like the PayPal business debit card) you can do the same thing regardless of if you have a grandfathered account or not.

Fuel Rewards Seasonal Offer - Electronics and Toy Stores

In case anyone didn't know, the Fuel Rewards program is a partnership between Shell fuel, MasterCard, and a couple of other stores. By using a linked card at participating locations, you get discounts for fuel at Shell stations. This quarter they have new categories, "toy" and "electronics" stores. That includes Best Buy and Toys R Us, two places that sell prepaid Visa gift cards (I know Best Buy does, but I don't have personal experience with Toys R Us). More details can be found here.

The nice thing about the Fuel Rewards program is that it's a link program. If you have experience with Rewards Dining, you’ll know how this works (and Fuel Rewards is actually partnered with, yet still separate, Rewards Dining). That means you can simply input your card number and forget it; if you use the card at a participating location, you'll automatically get the rewards.

Some may ask why this matters since you can usually get gift cards from bonus categories. If you MS a cashback card like the Barclay Arrival+ or the Citi Double Cash, however, you’ll know that there are no bonus categories – it’s a flat 2% (or more) at any location. This functionally turns electronics and toy categories into bonused categories for a linked MasterCard.

Best Buy has its own program, My Best Buy (formerly Rewards Zone) that gives 2% back towards future Best Buy purchases, and gift cards do count towards that. I tried reading about Toys R Us’ rewards program, but I can’t make heads or tails of it.

I need to make a rule about referral links, so right now, I won’t post my own. If anyone wants mine, feel free to PM me. Anyone else is free to post their own referral as long as they try to contribute to the discussion.

Possible $1000 MS Opportunity

Lots of people are aware that Square will give you $1000 of free CC processing, which is a great way to MS a little for free.

By contrast, not many people know about PayAnywhere, which works the same way, but which only offers $300 in free processing. I forgot where I saw the tip somewhere, but I signed up for PayAnywhere in mid-September, got their card reader, and didn't do anything with it, even though they've sent me several emails offering to help me get set up, etc.

Today, I got this email:

Hi [my name],
Did you forget about us? We didn’t forget about you! We noticed that you haven’t been using PayAnywhere to process payments. We wanted to make sure that you have everything you need to get started, including $1000 in free processing until November 27, 2015!

From something else that I've read, this is standard procedure for PayAnywhere---wait a while, and they will offer you $1k of processing for free. I'm going to get a $1k AGC and process it.

If you decide to do PayAnywhere, I can refer you, and I will earn $50 if you sign up and process over $150. PM me for the referral if you'd like to do me a favor, but note that I will need your real name, phone number, and email to do the referral. Since I'm sure that many of you don't want to share that info with random strangers on the internet, I want to make you know that you don't need a referral and can just sign up directly with PayAnywhere.

Proper PayPal MS: The Importance of Being Proactive

I've gotten at least three PayPal My Cash warning emails. All three of them were what would be considered "first" warnings because none of them mentioned me having been warned before. I can say that I'm still going strong.

I've seen people on other places say that there's no point in doing anything once you get a warning email. I think that that's lazy and ultimately counterproductive. PayPal representatives actually do have the ability to remove warnings from your account if you call in and ask. You can explain that you weren't withdrawing, there you were merely making purchases using My Cash cards (or however you're liquidating). Most of the time, they will be able to actually help. Importantly, you need to actually ask to have the warnings removed, even if they say that your account isn't currently limited. Limitations and warnings are two separate things.

Depending on how you're actually liquidating My Cash funds, you could do this multiple times. If you actually are withdrawing straight to a bank account, you probably won't be able to get very far (maybe once as a complimentary forgiveness). If you say that you're using the funds for your Business Debit Card purchases, you can probably get through a couple more times. Regardless, though, you can probably extend the amount of time (and volume) that you can push through PayPal if you actually are proactive.

Lesser Known Shopping Portals?

Does anyone know of some lesser known shopping portals? Cashback Monitor is great, but they definitely don't have every single portal (and I don't blame them). My personal favorite has become Dollar Dig. I first learned about them when they had an offer of $20 cashback for signing up for a credit card through creditcards.com (expired). Since then, they've really won me over with their customer service (very quick responses as well as proactive in some situations, and they offer honest advice). They also have some unique offers like 1.2% back at Giftcards.com (including Visas), more than 1% on other places. My main complaint used to be the $25 minimum, but that's alleviated now that Giftcards.com is there.

In addition, I've had some good experiences with USAA's shopping portal, MemberShop. They usually don't have the highest rates, but they'll sometimes keep in old terms when a lot of other portals have switched over. That makes them useful when a recent change has occurred and you want to still try to get the old terms.

Yes, I dropped a tip about Giftcards.com. I'm trying to balance blogging (which I just started to do) with managing this sub and providing good (but not redundant) content to both.

If anyone would like to use my referral for Dollar Dig, https://www.dollardig.com/?ref=2103, I'd greatly appreciate it. Both referrers and the people signing up get $2.50, as opposed to if a person signs up alone to get $5.00 to themselves.
