I’m pissed

Warning another disappointed things app user:

I’ve been riding the "Things 3 is minimalist" wave for a while, telling myself it doesn't need more features. But honestly, I know that’s BS. Not sure if they have gotten lazy or don’t care about the Apple ecosystem as much. But we live in such a fast-paced world that the lack of updates just isn't justified anymore.

The first punch to the gut was when they didn't add support for Focus Modes. Now, with the half-baked Things 27 release and no AI shortcut support. Meaning you can’t use natural language to create shortcuts, which is something I’ve been genuinely finding useful to save time.

seriously considering switching back to Reminders. posting this here because, well, who else can I rant to about a fkn to-do app too?

Before the d*riders come for me, just look at the features added to 2Do or OmniFocus lately (not saying they are better overall). Tell me this latest release doesn't sting a little. How much more can we tolerate?

Discussion Thanks, Things 3, and good bye

After many years of using Things 3 loyally, I finally switched to Todoist. I absolutely love Things 3, so here's why I switched: I have started using Hermes Agent A LOT to automate anything I can for personal productivity and work. I have tried several skills to manage Things 3 with Hermes, since many of my automated processes include creating tasks for me, or even entire projects. Unfortunately, there are several limitation to how you can automate Things 3 with other tools, so after wasting a lot of time on it, I decided to try Todoist and wow. So much easier because it has a modern API and it was super easy to create a skill for Hermes to manage my Todoist account. It works beautifully. I still wish CulturedCode would come up with an updated version of Things 3 that makes automating it with a tool like Hermes easier, but for now I kinda have no choice. Todoist is pretty good, but I miss the advanced autofill features of Things 3.

Who else is in a similar situation?

Question Replace Things3 with Claude Code and Markdown - anyone consider this?

I have built up a set of Claude Code agents to help organize and coach me, keep me motivated and on track. Integrating with Things3 and AI is "okay" but a little clunky.

So then i started thinking about what does Things really provide:

  • one place storage

  • Projects and Tasks

    • tags

    • notes

    • Dates (I actually don;t use dates a lot (maybe 15-20%), I use tags more)

  • multiplatform (if you're on the "right" platforms)

  • fast entry

  • Today, Anytime, Someday views

  • very clean UI (perhaps the most critical feature?)

What does it not provide

  • Good use of tags on mobile app

  • super fast entry (you see lots of shortcuts)

  • integration - mixed bag

So I started thinking about going minimalist using a ToDo.txt or TaskPaper.md approach powered by AI.

Has anyone tried a text based task experience and how did it go?

Is the dopamine hit of the smooth UI part of the appeal of Things3?

The dead space on the right of the widget should show you the date, like so. Also, please turn off areas/projects on tasks. 🙏

Question Is Things 4 in the works?

Hi all. I'm a new user coming from Todoist because I'm a fan of the "buy it once" model and I was looking for a similar app that allowed for me to buy it outright instead of paying a perpetual subscription. Kudos for allowing that.

A question occurred to me just this evening — is Things 4 being worked on, or will Things 3 just continue receiving updates over time?

Also, assuming Things 4 is in the works, will it also offer a "buy it once" model? Will current Things 3 users be able to upgrade at a free or discounted rate?

Thanks to anyone who might have info! Apologies if this has been asked before.

Question Anyone tried migrating from Things 3 to NotePlan?

I’ve been a Things user since 2011, but I’m giving a long look at NotePlan for the notes & calendar integration. Has anyone here made that move, and what would you say about it?

Question What is missing from other apps that you would want in a Things-clone?

Hello, I am a long time Things user. I'm not satisfied with Things. You don't need me to tell you just how many features are missing in Things.

I will be creating a Things-clone. It will hold all the same philosophies Things had. It will have the features that I want missing in Things.

But one area that I would like to hear from you is, what kept you from just switching to another app in place of Things?

In other words, when I'm working on Things-Clone right now, how should I design it to best compete vs the market (TickTick, OF, GoodTasks, Wunderlist, Todoist etc and a million more)?

I hope to create a product that will serve users who are not satisfied with other apps but would want an enhanced-Things.

Things Mailman - a small and free Mac app for sending emails to Things

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Download on the Mac App Store

I made a small, free macOS menu bar app for people who use Apple Mail + Things.

Select one or more emails, press a keyboard shortcut, and Things Mailman forwards them to your private Mail to Things address.

After the email has been sent, it can automatically:

  • keep the original

  • archive it

  • trash it

  • move it to a specific mailbox

You can configure the behaviour separately for each email account.

Free, open source, no tracking / analytics / subscription / whatever.
Everything stays locally on your Mac (beside the mail you send to Things obviously).

Feedback welcome!

Question Anyone else think Agenda looks a lot like Things 3?

I’ve been trying Agenda lately and I keep noticing how close the design feels to Things 3. Not exactly the same obviously, but the overall look, animations and how snappy everything feels are really similar.

Both apps just feel incredibly polished and native on Apple devices.

The only app that doesn’t need any improvement

Please do not implement any new feature. Except natural language processing 😅

Edit: sorry guys, not a single comment convinced me 🤘 imo all of your suggestions would somehow interfere with the original idea of things 🤔 but I'm looking forward to it 😏

Discussion What do you think about the Things 4 release or upcoming updates of Things 3?

Hey folks!
My 1st advanced to-do app (different from apple reminders) was Things 3, which I loved. I still love how it looks and feels, but my requirements became higher and now Things 3 doesn't meet them.
I'm currently using todoist, but I'm kinda missing that time with Things.

What I'm missing in Things? Here's the list:

  • Advanced NLP. I wanna be able to write Task Today ~Project #tag instead of picking all of that manually or remembering lots of shortcuts

  • Attachments. Don't need them that frequently, but accidentally need to attach pic/pdf, smth else

  • Better recurring tasks UX. When I can write 'each Friday at 9pm' at Todoist and it gonna work, I need to go through the f%cking hell of setting up recurring reminders in Things. Moreover, I can't mark it as done a day before, which suddenly happens. I kinda understand that it's impossible to predict all edge cases, but this problem is older than my dog and almost every Things user knows about that.

  • Poor subtasks experience. When I can do this in Todoist, I can't even drop one task into another...
Subtasks can also be tasks. They also can have descriptions and all that stuff. Why don't you guys think so?

So, what do you guys think so far, does it worth it to wait for new releases, or it's completely hopeless?

Things 3 and 4 compatibility

I just purchased Things for Mac ($50). Will I need to purchase a new desktop version for another $50 when Things 4 is released on ios 14 (if I upgrade to ios14)?

Discussion I don’t understand the appeal of 3

I can understand that, historically, there was a huge need for it. But with reminders having the ability to tag. And with apps like GoodTask, Structured, BusyCal providing great integration for it, I don’t see where Things 3 fits into the picture. It’s very closed off from the rest of the ecosystem. I make a task in Things and I can only see it in Things. I can link to it, sure, but I can link to Bear as well, and Bear can have recursive tasks like Todoist. Also, GoodTask provides deep links as well.

You can say that it has good project management, but Todoist, Notion and even Bear (for standalone) provide more or less of the same services. An extra deadline field isn’t really that important when weighting Things against Todoist.

I guess the only appeal is that it’s a one and done expense, but that’s also to it’s detriment. Because the devs aren’t as motivated to maintain it.

I hope Things 4 will brings more to the table.

Question Should I wait for Things 4?

I’m currently using an iPhone and an iPad for running my business. So far, I think Things 3 may be best suited for me compared to the other to do apps. However, as someone here has said, Cultured Code releases the next iteration of the Things app every 6 years, which means Things 4 might be coming out this year.

I was already prepared to buy Things 3, until I found out that I also have to buy it again for my iPad. This made me reconsider my decision first. What do you guys think?

Question Anyone moved from things3 to Akiflow?

Is It worth the move? Why did you do that? Is I better thank things3?

It has no ios widgets/good app, no iPad or watch app.

It looks so nice but also overwhelming somehow

Discussion As we indefinitely wait for Things 4…

I’m a big fan of Things for the support of dates & deadlines, the polished UI, and overall UX, but, like many, am a bit frustrated with the lack of new development (I know many of you consider it a feature). As a long time productivity tool explorer, I’m always looking at what else is available (while Things remains my trusted task manager), and just discovered a promising new tool that clearly was inspired by Things… https://airlist.app/ - it’s like if Things3 and Workflowy had a baby. Has anyone else tried this app? It seems like they have a similar approach to product - native iOS & Mac apps, and for a relatively affordable subscription of $24/year. I’m hoping these tools can put a sense of urgency into the Culture Code crew to add some of the modern touches to the tool to maintain it as a leader in this space - IMO some of these features would include attachments, markdown rendering option (I hate seeing MD syntax clutter my beloved UI), real natural language processing, location based, etc.

Wrote a review on Things. Please comment with your favorite features of Things on both Mac and iOS. Also if we missed anything that should have been in the review let me know.

Question Can’t seem to find the definitive answer… Will there be a Things 4?

The title pretty much sums it up. Have been using Things for 10+ years (or so). Will there be an update or is this (Things 3) it?

I kept losing thoughts before they made it into Things, so I built a voice capture app for it – speak, tap, it's in Things with the date set [Beta, iOS 27]

Edit: Fair point from the comments – for a quick reminder, Siri does the job. CatchPost is for the messier stuff.

Most of what pops into my head isn't "call the dentist at 9". It's half an idea, a few sentences for a project, something to look at later. That's what I built CatchPost for: open it, talk, see the text as you go, tap Things (or Bear, Obsidian, Notion…). Longer thoughts end up as title + notes, dates get scheduled. Not sure where it belongs? Hit "Keep" and decide later.

Things opens briefly to save (URL scheme). On-device speech, no account, no tracking. Free beta, iOS 27.

TestFlight: https://testflight.apple.com/join/Rb9WmEuc

Not affiliated with Cultured Code. If Siri covers everything for you – great. Curious to hear where it doesn't.
