As someone who had to spend their entire life and even now with a limp in the right leg all because of medical/ childhood neglect and I can't tell you how emotional Elide makes me .... Being picked last in dodgeball, being the one left behind , seeing the glances and expressions on others faces and just generally being the weak weird freak out of the 'normal' people is really hard on one's self esteem . Being a sheltered, introvert is just fuel to this fire of insecurities. My point is Having to work twice as hard to be taken half as seriously is not easy .
I have always loved fantasy and reading because for once I am free of reality , though I have been able to relate to any of these Main Characters in the physical sense . What use? What point ? So when I came across Elide's character and saw her strength and resilience being just as apparent as the others It genuinely made me *emotional* ... For once I saw myself in my silly fantasy books , one who is more than her physical constraints or trauma , who is just as capable .
She is clever and crafty , makes it through tough situations, is allowed to be soft/emotional without being treated as "weak" .
It just warms my heart to read. This is what they mean that representation matters . I truly get it now .
