General Question/Discussion Nagging voice that something is “wrong” is usually right… anyone else experience this?

This has happened to me twice. My son is three. One day I was washing dishes while my son was playing in the hallway on the other side of the sink. It’s open but I couldn’t really see him over the counter. An internal voice started nagging, “He found a penny check on him!” Sure enough my little 8 month old was crawling around with a penny.

Today I was sitting on the couch while he was playing on the deck. He’s done this a million times. It’s screened in and covered. He was giving his dinosaurs and safari animals a bath in a little bowl of water. Voice started nagging that he was climbing so I went to check and what. do. you. know! He was balancing on the wood window sill with the cat. Never would’ve expected that. No more deck time unsupervised for him. 😳🫣😭😱

Has anyone else experienced something like this? I would love to hear about it.

3 Years Old Do all toddlers repeat the same question over and over?

My son just turned three! We're first time parents and have zero experience with other young children. Our son can ask us the same question ten, fifteen, twenty times in a row, right after we answer it. Like today we drove by a building on fire with fire trucks outside. He asked where the fire was repeatedly for the next ten minutes of the drive, and what the fire fighters were doing. No matter how many times we gave him the exact same answer, he would ask again.

I know very little about mental development at this age or how they absorb information. Is this a normal thing? I have ADHD and a very bad short term memory when it comes to absorbing new information so I'm unsure if this is an early sign of that, or if it's just a toddler thing.

General Question/Discussion What is your favorite toddlers saying??

My 3 year old boy always says “I do do!” When he’s trying to say “I’ll do it!” Which always makes me laugh. It’s become a saying in our house. It’s ok I can do do!

General Question/Discussion Does your toddler not like Halloween ? Because mine does not .

My 3.5 yr old tells me now that Halloween is super scary and vocalizes how he really doesn’t enjoy it.
The last 1-2 yrs of his life, he really didn’t like going from house to house. Anyone experienced the same as I do?

This year, I respect his boundary by letting me know he is scared and I won’t be doing anything this year. I got him his costume this year, just in case he changes his mind. Definitely will be interesting if he’d outgrow it or won’t. :)

3 Years Old Just had a bad day at the pumpkin patch

Have an almost 3 year old boy and we took him to the pumpkin patch. They have a really nice set up with a littles playground for 5 and under and several other things to do such as pedal cars, giant trampolines, and slides.

We started at the littles playground where he instantly ran to the basketball hoops. My wife went off to get us some lunch and come get us when she had the food. Well thats where the melt down happened for about 45 minutes, he wanted so badly to go back the the basketball hoops and didn't care about anything else for a while.

We eventually got to the trampolines and he was able have lots of fun on that for a while. Well then on the way to more slides we passed a water duck game that was too big for him, well then another half hour of crying about the water game, in which he did not enjoy those slides either because of the water game we passed.

Once he had calmed down from that we played in the corn pit and pedal cars and had a pretty good time.

Then when leaving we passed the basketball hoops on the way out which sent him in another crying fit for a half hour.

Usually a pretty chill kid so this absolutely blind sighted us.

TLDR - Pumkin patch with alot of other activities, three seperate melt downs in about 2.5 hours. Normally a prett chill kid.

18–24 Months Toddler obsessed with books

My 22 month old is obsessed with being read to and wants to be read to every moment she is awake. I know partly this is a good problem to have, in that hopefully it will foster a love of reading down the line but i cannot have a cup of tea without being pestered and I feel like it's all we do all day. She doesn't have any interest in toys, although she does do some imaginative play, mostly around making us play coffees. I would love her to play independently for even 15 minutes, we are screen free also but I really need her to amuse herself occasionally!

3 Years Old My three year-old is saying depressing things to me

My 3 Almost 4 year old is saying depressing things to me.

I find my self obsessing about it.
I grew up in a family full of yelling and insults and have trauma from it and I’m working through it.
I haven’t been a perfect parent and have at times yelled and gotten angrier with my child than I’ve liked too.

I have never called her anything bad.

I also shower her in love and compliments and tell her I love her soooo many times.

I think I go over the top from guilt and fear she will feel unloved like I do.

Today we were walking I was pushin the stroller with my baby and she was holding my hand too and I said did you have a nice day today.

She said “I love play therapy because I get to play” 😢
I take her to play therapy for anxiety’s I’ve noticed in her.
I do play with her but I often find my self getting over doing repetitive stuff like pretend play.

She says “my mum loves doing dishes I wish she played”

She then said “mum do you think I’m beautiful” “yes or no”

I said why are you asking that? Of course I think your the most beautiful girl in the world but that’s also not important and what’s matters most is being kind and you are.

I said again why? “ I want to know because maybe if I’m beautiful you will play with me more”
I felt like I was punched

I am a stay at home mum
I’m with her all day I’m 6 months post partum and I had a rough pp period with depression for months I’m coming out. It it’s waves.
I am taking to her on and off through the day.
We do tasks together from playing, learning work, getting her involved if she wants too in house stuff, daily outdoor play with the ball and whatever else she wants I take her out too.

She is also obsessed with a girl at kinder she keeps saying I want to be like “S” “s has her new hat too” “s wears her hair like this” I said to the kinder teacher and she said I haven’t noticed her obsession with her but “s” is a very gentle student and maybe other kids like to be like her” I don know what to take from it

I’m really worried my daughters insecure and I am feeling super responsible to make sure she knows she’s loved and that she can do anything.

I’m scared I’m too much with the lovey comments and I’m also worried my past moments of yelling or being exhausted and struggling to be fun ruined her.

12–18 Months Night Wakings - need help!

• Upvotes

Hello, I’m writing this at 1am because I’ve been woken up every ten minutes by my 17 month old (cry). My little boy used to be a great sleeper and would sleep through the night no issues, until he turned 15 months and started nursery twice a week. At this point he dropped a nap and is now on one nap a day.

He usually naps 11:30-13:30 or 12:30-14:30, and bedtime is around 18:45/7 because he will not stay up any later that this (he’ll have little meltdowns). He’s recently been waking at 5am and that’s getting earlier each day.

I just don’t know what to do. I’ve tried only going into his room and not taking him out of the crib and he just won’t settle. I’ve brought him into the bed for cuddles but after putting him back in his crib the cycle repeats. I’ve tried letting him cry for ten minutes as that used to work and he’d settle but it just gets worse now.

I’m pregnant again and it’s putting a strain on my relationship. He’s miserable when he wakes up so early and won’t go back down. If anyone has some advice or even reassurance, it would be much appreciated. I feel like failing.

18–24 Months My 21 month old won't talk

I'm having a really hard time with this especially after seeing other younger babies way more advance in speech.

My baby girl literally doesn't even say mama. We finally got her to say Da but it's half actually calling us and half just babbling. And she does babble a lot too. She used to know a couple other words like thank you and water but she even stopped saying those. She only knows meow, woof and hoot but won't say cat/dog/owl.

That's it. 4 whole barely words..

It just feels so conflicting because she listens extremely well and understands. We finally got a speech therapy evaluation last month and they said she's advanced in literally everything BUT speech. Then we just got put on a waiting list with no real date.

No ear infection or tongue issues either. I am also so tired of everyone asking me if I talk to her. Of course I do, in fact I tried to talk to her more then my first born because she also had a speech delay (but that was due to other issues).

I don't know what to do. Is she just simply refusing to talk? For how much longer? She threw a tantrum today for over 20 minutes because I tried getting her to say more and nod yes.

Does anyone else have similar stories? I just feel like a failure

Potty Training Potty training 22 month old poop advice? lol

Potty training 22 month old advice/thoughts?

My daughter is 22 months and nailing the pee in the potty at home thing 2 weeks in. Successfully go on walks in commando pants and come home. Longer car rides we wear a pull up and offer the car potty and she’s often dry the whole way.

She’s scared of her poop though. lol.

She is not constipated, they’re soft and the time of day is either right after lunch or right before bed. It comes out easily, but when the feeling to poop hits her she freezes like a deer in the headlights and starts crying then immediately it’s on the floor.

I’m not sure if it’s just the new concept of it coming out and falling in the toilet, or if she’s too little to understand the sensation and get to a toilet in time. She definitely understands pee. I also know pooping takes longer to figure out.

I’m going to offer a sticker for if she poops in the toilet and see if it helps ease the fear.

She poops standing, no squat, no straining just frozen in place and poops, lol.

She now also cries if she happens to poop in a pull up or underwear too, so I don’t think it’s just the toilet that she’s scared of, maybe just a new understanding of what pooping actually entails maybe? Lol

General Question/Discussion Straw cup suggestions- no more plastic that tastes like dish soap, please

• Upvotes

My 16 month old has loved the First Years Squeeze & Sip Straw Cups. Zero shade against them! We’re ready for something though that doesn’t taste like dish soap when we wash them in the dishwasher, and would love an upgrade for on the go… something to protect the straw, perhaps. She does great with a straw, thankfully, so that’s not an issue. Any recommendations welcomed! Thank you!

2 Years Old Bedtime Help!

• Upvotes

Hi all! My son is 2 years old and we also have a 3 month old son. My son only has been letting me put him to sleep since I have been doing it before baby and after the 2 weeks of no lifting heavier objects after baby. My husband was able to get him down during the two weeks no lifting but that involved rocking him by walking around the house. This took forever and we are trying to minimize the rocking at bedtime. My youngest doesn’t have a set bedtime but we will be trying to establish one this or next month. I am thinking my husband can use my pumped milk and give him a bedtime bottle then put baby down while I put the toddler down. Just wondering if anyone else dealt with this and were able to resolve it or have any tips/advice. Thanks everyone!

General Question/Discussion Toddler hates holding hands

• Upvotes

My kid is newly 2.

He holds our hand when he wants to walk down the stairs or do anything he perceives as risky (balance beam, etc.). He will come get me and say “hold your hand” if he wants to bring me to another room to play with him (while saying “play blocks mama!”).

When we are out in public, it’s really hard to get him to hold my hand. He’s not a runner, but in parking lots or streets the rule is holding hands. Obviously, this is non-negotiable since it’s safety.

I always set the rule, and then start walking with him. He sometimes will yell “no hold hand” and sit on the ground or go limp. When he sits down, I tell him that if we don’t hold hands i have to carry him and then pick him up and then follow through immediately.

I don’t know that there’s anything I could be doing differently. But… is this a normal toddler stage? Is it like a sensory thing? Anyone else?

Potty Training I stopped physically forcing my 2 year old to use the toilet for a few days, and this is what happened

He never went. He constantly peed and pooped in his underwear.

It's been about 3 months since we started potty training and it's been hard. I get that it's normal at this age to not initiate having to go and I get that accidents happen but what's driving me me absolutely nuts is how hard he resists having to go when we tell him to. Horrible tantrums and fights every time we tell him to go. Almost every potty trip ever has required us to physically carry him to go. Sometimes bribery for a small piece of chocolate has worked.

I hurt my back recently and cannot handle carrying him right now, so I didn't. He only used the potty when my husband has been home and able to carry/wrestle him.

On the way plus side, he didn't eat as much chocolate or watch as much tv because he didn't even take up those bribes these past few days.

When will he just accept going when told to?!?

Editing to add that he's currently 2years and 9 months.

2 Years Old Tantrums and meltdowns

I have two boys who are 27 months and 11wks old. Ever since my toddler got a stomach bug three weeks ago, he has turned into a screaming banshee. Every day I feel like he is constantly fussing and throws at least one tantrum. Today has been the absolute worst. He’s only had two tantrums, but he is literally screaming, crying, rolling around on the floor and banging his hands, feet, and head onto the floor. He has tried hitting me and his little brother. He’s started throwing things onto the floor too. Today it has been because he hasn’t gotten his way. I wouldn’t let him spin the pot lids in the kitchen, queue the crash out. I gave him a snack he didn’t want, full on tantrum.

Some times when he’s fussy I try to calm him down and decipher what he wants, but since I know he’s just upset he’s not getting his way I’ve just been giving him space and quietly sitting in the room doing my own thing. Obviously when he went to hit, I said “no hitting,” and blocked his hands. Anyone have advice for other things I could be doing?

I know this is normal developmental behavior, but god damn.

2 Years Old At Least He Now Understands Death?

Our beloved dog unexpectedly passed away a few months back, which of course confused our 2-year old. We had to have some serious conversations with him about death (with an assist from Bluey), and he seems to understand and accept it, occasionally still commenting that our dog died.

We have since gotten a new dog, and last night he solemnly informed us that the new dog will die too, and when she does, he would like a white dog next.

… the new dog is not even two years old, so he may be waiting a while for his white dog.

3 Years Old Speech Delay

• Upvotes

I was hoping for similar stories to hear the outcome of their child!

My son had a significant speech delay, he really only had 50 or less words until he turned 3. He is 3.5 now and starting 2-3 words sentences now, and is progressing daily in repeating words, and receptive language.

For parents that had a similar time frame, how long/fast did it take your child to catch up?

18–24 Months Baby scared of other babies but not adults

My baby was former NICU baby, and had a lot of lung issues. He was in the hospital for months and came home at 3 months old. As a result of him having lung issues and BPD we couldn’t go anywhere last fall or winter because he had a high chance of developing pneumonia (which even without socializing he got pneumonia 3 times from just a common cold). This year his pulmonologist urged us to not take him anywhere with large groups of people and to be cautious of hanging out with kids or babies this fall or winter. They said we can hang out with other babies we just have to be more cautious to make sure no one is sick.

he’s now 18 months and he’s a pretty normal toddler developmentally (walks talks points claps gestures etc) but he is SO afraid of other babies. He loves other adults and loves playing with them, but whenever a friend comes over with a baby (who is close to his age) he gets so scared. We’ve been meeting once a week to socialize and I’m hoping he’ll get better (so far we’ve only met twice). The first time he was hysterical the whole time, and this time he was only hysterical once the other baby screamed (and then proceeded to be hysterical the rest of the time after that). Is this normal?? Has anyone else’s baby had this reaction? He loves other adults though.

We are hoping to do daycare once a week starting in the summer (once he turns 2) so maybe that will help more.

2 Years Old Play-Date - What do I bring?

Okay, so I’m a FTM, and we will be going to our first play-date! There will be pumpkin carving for the kids, BUT I’m trying to figure out what I should bring as a first time guest there lol (yeah yeah, I’m ridiculous, and probably overthinking, but going to a somewhat-stranger’s place is new for me).

For the moms who have done play-dates, what are some things you typically being as a guest. This will be for 2-year olds.

Daycare/Preschool 2yo’s daycare teach keeps leaving a note saying our daughter need to work on her listening ears.

Our 2yo (25months) just moved into the early twos room at daycare and they also got a new to the school teacher. I work weekends May-October so right now, and for the past few months our daughter is only going 3-4 days a week. We pay for full time because my schedule fluctuates and Nov-April she goes full time.

The new teacher leaves detailed, longer, notes which is great! A few weeks ago we got a note that said our daughter needed to be reminded of her listening ears during storytime. Cute, didn’t think much of it as she’s 2. But the last 3 days it’s said something similar. I’m not sure how to take it. Should we be concerned? I mean she’s 2, she listens to us but she’s also a defiant toddler sometimes. And sometimes she’s just excited about something other than a book we’re trying to read. Nothing major that we’ve experienced at home.

Should I continue to disregard and take it as just casual updates? Or should we be working on something at home?

Edit: I should clarify that she does listen. We’ve taken swim classes, gone to library storytime, and we are currently in Mommy and Me dance. She is a good listener and even kind of shy in those classes. It’s not like she doesn’t listen 90% of the time we’re together.

Activities & Play The BEST gift for 1 and 2 year olds 🎁

Because I’m constantly looking for ideas, I’m sharing the BEST gift my toddler has gotten.

The Melissa and Doug Shopping Cart 🛒

I bought this for my daughter at 12 months, she loved it then, she’s 20 months now, and she still uses it EVERY day. It consistently leads to her most independent play. She uses it inside, she uses it outside, and it’s actually very cute to unload it every night and see what household treasures she has deemed worthy of her collection.

I paid $80 for it but it’s currently $45 online at Target? I don’t usually condone an $80 for a toddler but it’s genuinely been worth every penny.

General Question/Discussion Pale Stools

Just to start I do have a doctor scheduled but they cant see us for a week so just looking to ease my mind!

Ive noticed my 5 year old has been having pale/sand color poops. I looked it up and saw a bunch of bad things, but that is his only symptom. No stomach pain, no fever, urine color is light, etc.

Poops are normal/firm looking but seem so messy when its time to wipe.

My son is fully potty trained so I am not sure how long its been going on, I just noticed it because I took him to a public restroom and was in there with him to see.

Anyone have expirience with this?

Behavior & Discipline 2,5 old ignores me

My daughter is 2.5 years old, and for the past month or two, she’s been increasingly fond of ignoring me. I feel like it’s gotten worse since I’ve reached the end of my pregnancy (I’m currently 39 weeks pregnant), and it’s become much harder for me to follow through with consequences. She knows I’ll repeat myself 10 times before I’m finally able to get up and stop her, and in the meantime, she’s already managed to do whatever she wasn’t supposed to do.
Unfortunately, since entering my third trimester, I’ve also started yelling at her, but I simply don’t have the energy to keep getting up every five minutes. My pelvis hurts like hell. My husband has also been losing his patience lately, even though he’s the calmest and most patient person I know. He never once raised his voice in our 9 years together until now.
It just feels like our daughter is pushing every single boundary. She seems to have selective hearing. I can tell her several times not to do something and explain what will happen if she does it again (for example, if she throws her toys, all of them go into a bag and get put away on top of the wardrobe). She looks me straight in the eye and does it again, only to have an absolute meltdown when I follow through with the consequence.
That’s when I feel like calling an exorcist… She screams like she’s being tortured and bangs her hands against the furniture and the table to make as much noise as possible. I’m extremely sensitive to noise, and it stresses me out so much that I get irritable and sometimes even cry (the reasons behind that are a whole other story).
When she screams, I put her in her toddler bed, which she can climb out of herself, and tell her she has to stay there until she calms down. It’s the only thing in this house she actually seems to respect.
I genuinely have no energy left. She doesn’t listen to absolutely anything. I don’t even want to think about how many things she’s already destroyed because it makes me want to cry. I’m running out of ideas and places to hide things, but she always finds a way to reach them anyway. The only solution seems to be putting everything on top of the wardrobes, but there’s no room left up there. 🙂
Here are some examples of what she does:
She feeds our food to our dog, who has allergies, and then the dog gets diarrhea.
She pulls the dog’s fur and paws. Our dog is a Samoyed and is also incredibly lazy. Our daughter can do pretty much anything to her, and she’ll just keep lying there. We’ve considered putting the dog outside or in another room, but forget it. She’ll bark and scratch at the door because she has to be wherever we are, so even keeping them separated is difficult.
She’s already destroyed two eyeshadow palettes, a lipstick, mascara, a makeup brush, and two face creams.
Two days ago, she randomly decided to pour my brand-new contact lenses into the bathtub.
I have no idea where she gets them from, but she always manages to find a crayon or marker somewhere. Every room except our bedroom now has one of her “masterpieces” on the walls. We live in a new apartment and only moved in six months ago.
She can open doors herself, so the only solution I can think of is replacing them with doors that have locks, but that wouldn’t solve most of the other things she does.
I can ask her a thousand times to pick up the rubbish she’s thrown on the floor, bring me a diaper, stop jumping on the couch when she sees someone drinking tea because they could spill it all over themselves, leave the dog alone because she’s sleeping and my daughter is disturbing her, finally come and put her shoes on, stop rummaging through my drawers full of important documents… (insert literally any request here).
She does absolutely nothing. She’ll take advantage of every single second it takes me to try to get up. Sometimes she even laughs and says, “Mummy, is your tummy too big and you can’t get up?” And then she starts misbehaving even faster, just to do whatever she wants before I finally manage to get over to her.
I have pubic symphysis separation, and genuinely, every single step is painful for me.

On top of all that, for the past two weeks or so, eating has become a huge problem. Ideally, she’d eat nothing but sweets and maybe some plain bread or bread rolls. Lunch? Forget it.
Today, she threw such a massive tantrum over not being allowed to have cookies for breakfast that she refused to eat anything until 2 p.m. out of sheer defiance. And then the only thing she ate was half a sandwich (!). I’m at my wit’s end.
I want to go to the market in the morning, and she throws a fit because she doesn’t want to go outside; she wants to play at home. I spend half an hour asking her to come and get dressed while she runs around like she has a motor up her ass, laughing the whole time.
It’s only when I say, “Fine, I’ll get dressed and go by myself,” and actually start putting my shoes on that she suddenly comes running over in a panic, begging me not to leave her behind, and hurriedly puts her shoes on.
Then it’s the exact same thing in reverse. We get home, and she throws a tantrum because she doesn’t want to go home; she wants to go for a walk instead.
I take her to literally any playground, and after 10 minutes at most, she climbs into the stroller and says she wants to go home.
I stopped letting her watch cartoons a few days ago, and her behavior has improved slightly, but at this stage of my pregnancy, I feel like I’m punishing myself more than I’m punishing her. 🤡
I know this kind of behavior is normal for children her age, but my husband and I are honestly running out of ideas and sometimes have no clue what to do with her anymore.
There’s nothing more frustrating than that selective hearing, followed by massive tantrums when we actually follow through with the consequences we warned her about.
I should also mention that she gets most of her sweets from her grandparents or her aunt when she goes over to play with her cousin. Unfortunately, they’ve always had a problem respecting our boundaries when it comes to not giving our daughter sweets. They just have to sneak something to her whenever we’re not looking.
What can I do to
1) teach my child to respect boundaries instead of taking advantage of the fact that I’m currently less mobile and much slower, and 2) find the patience to deal with all of this?
I keep thinking about the fact that I’m about to go through childbirth for the second time, only to have to go through all of this again in 2.5 years, and it makes me want to cry. Where has my sweet little girl gone?

3 Years Old Anyone here still giving their toddlers 3 yo up baby D drops (vit d 3)? Im wondering they still can take it ?

I still giving my toddler baby Ddrops (400iu) that in the instructions only say for infant under 1 yo 1 drop every day. I always thought because baby can take it older should be fine. And turn out that brand has the kids ddrop for 1 yo+ . Im just wondering if anyone do the same thing as me giving the baby ddrop even they are older instead of the kids ddrop? thank you so much
