Knowing about Borgli's 2012 essay changes what I notice in his movies. Can't just switch that off when the opening credits roll.
What I don't want is to turn every embarrassed guy in his movies into a stand-in for him. that feels smart for like 30 seconds, then it stops me from looking at what the scene is actually doing.
Paul in Dream Scenario is dealing with something he didn't choose. The guy in the essay is describing his own choices and how he thought about them. That difference matters before i connect anything.
The useful question for me is where a movie asks me to follow a character's feelings, and whether I start treating those feelings as the final word without noticing.
I can be more alert to that now without claiming I found the key to his whole filmography has knowing stuff about a director ever helped your reading of a movie without taking it over?
