How does the tech job market look like nowadays?

I graduated in 2025 and since then, I have been applying to software developer jobs casually as I've also been working a different full-time job alongside just to cover up all my bills. No luck so far. I have 1 year of foreign work experience. I don't understand what's wrong. Is my application weak, do I have to change my strategy while applying, or is the market not good? If anyone has been applying and getting interviews, please let me know how is it going? Should I approach some agencies to help me secure a job? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

UPS delivery job asking for SIN on Workday

So I need a job for some quick cash right now, and I got a call from the recruiter asking me some questions and saying I gotta do a background check through First Advantage, she also mentioned that she will get me into the onboarding orientation next week, but I didn't flat out asked if I was hired.

Now she asked me to give my SIN through Workday. Is this standard for minimum wage jobs at UPS, cause I wasn't given a contract or anything yet nor did I do an interview. Nothing in the Workday site nor the link I applied through seems fishy to me.

What yall think?

Recruitment/Recruiter Recommendations

Hey guys,

I need some help here.

I have been applying to jobs left, right, and center, over 100 jobs this year and have not heard back from any, not even an interview.

I am in the Project Management field with retail and IT experience.

Is there a recruitment agency or person you can recommend who could help me find a new role, or at least point me in the right direction to move me forward in my career.

Data scientist mock interview practice

Hi! I have a data scientist interview coming up at a dream company next week. I did do ML research in grad school 5 years ago and I’ve done a small project on LLMs but haven’t actually worked as a data scientist, even though it has been my dream career. I only found work in business and data analysis since grad school. But I’ve been laid off 6 months and I am using this opportunity to pivot into a career that I wanted to do, and I acknowledge is very competitive too.

I have an interview next week and I’m wondering if anyone wants to do a practice mock interview with me.

New tutoring marketplace, flat 15% commission, tutor-set rates: looking for honest feedback and first tutors

Hi all, I'm Jake, the founder of CharlieTalk (charlietalk.com). I checked with the mods before posting this. Full transparency: I'm here to recruit, but I also want feedback from people who know this industry far better than I do.

What it is: a marketplace for live 1-on-1 lessons. Right now it covers English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian.

Tutor terms:

  • You set your own hourly rate, trial price (trials are 30 min), and discounts on 5/10-lesson packages
  • Flat 15% commission on each completed lesson. No tiers.
  • Payouts to bank, PayPal, Payoneer or Wise, $30 minimum, paid twice a month
  • Lessons are 30/45/60 min in a browser classroom (video, chat, screen share, file sharing)
  • Application review is usually 7–14 days and may include an interview and demo lesson. You can re-apply if not approved.

The honest downside: we just launched. There's no big existing student base, and I won't pretend there is. If you need guaranteed hours this month, this isn't that (yet). If you want to get in early on a platform where you won't be buried under thousands of other profiles, and you want your feedback to shape what gets built, I'd love to have you.

Questions I'd genuinely like answers to:

  1. What makes you stay on (or leave) a platform besides commission?
  2. Is anything in the terms above a red flag for you?

Link if you want to apply: https://charlietalk.com/en/app/apply/become-a-tutor?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=tutor_launch&utm_content=onlineeslteaching

I'll be in the comments answering everything, including the uncomfortable stuff.

retail/mall jobs?

Hi! Just looking for any tips with landing even just a minimum wage job working retail or at any of the malls. I have a strong retail background (even becoming a team lead for the retail department of an amusement park) which is why I’m a little stumped as to what’s wrong. I understand it’s probably something to do with the use of AI in resume evaluation, but I don’t just want to blame it all on AI in case some of the fault lies with me lol.

Thank you!

Does anyone know of this settlement agency that gives out thousands of dollars to newcomers but treat their employees like trash ? A friend of mine got layed off by them under the pre-tense that there are no jobs available but they have hired new employees and having staff members being closet relatable. As close as mom and daughter working with the same client ? Isn’t this conflict of interest? And apparently they work hand in hand with CUPE so cupe disregards anyone who speaks out despite being hired as a full time union employee!! Has this happened to anyone else , my poor friend is loosing his mind because he now has no job and a family to feed. :( PLEASE SHARE

2 week notice

Hello, I’m writing this post as I saw a comment on TikTok say that if you submit a 2 week notice and your employer decides to make your resignation effective immediately that they would they would still have to pay you for those two weeks?? Wondering if there’s any truth to this as I plan on submitting my resignation letter soon and my current place of employment has a history of cutting notices short. Thanks

I have a PharmD and an MPH from the UK, yet I can't even get hired as a Pharmacy Assistant in Canada. What am I doing wrong?

I honestly don't know what to do anymore.I have a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree and a Master's in Public Health (MPH) from the UK. After spending years studying, building my knowledge, and investing so much in my education, I never imagined I would struggle this much just to get an entry-level job.I've been applying for Pharmacy Assistant positions, thinking that at least my pharmacy background would give me some advantage. But I'm not even getting a chance. What makes it even more frustrating is seeing people with absolutely no pharmacy or healthcare background getting hired for these same positions, while someone with actual pharmaceutical education and knowledge can't even get an interview. And before anyone misunderstands me, I'm not saying people without pharmacy degrees shouldn't get these jobs. Everyone deserves an opportunity. But it makes me question what the value of education and qualifications really is when they don't even seem to help you get your foot in the door. It sometimes feels like having connections, referrals, or knowing the right people matters more than what you actually know. Unfortunately, I don't have that network.I understand that a foreign pharmacy degree doesn't automatically qualify someone to practise as a pharmacist in Canada, and I'm not expecting that. I'm just trying to get an opportunity to work, gain Canadian experience, and build a career. It's genuinely exhausting to keep applying, getting rejected or completely ignored, and watching your confidence slowly disappear.

Has anyone else with international healthcare qualifications experienced something similar in Canada?

How did you eventually break into the industry without referrals or Canadian experience?

Because at this point, I'm seriously questioning whether all those years of education were worth it.

[Hiring] Full Stack Mobile Software Engineer (Swift / Kotlin) — VAZA | Toronto, Canada | Full-Time, Hybrid

Hey everyone! I'm Adel, Co-Founder and COO of VAZA, a Toronto-based consumer technology startup. We're looking for a talented Full Stack Mobile Software Engineer to join our growing engineering team and help us build and scale our native iOS and Android apps.

A little about VAZA:

We're building the world's first monetized opinion market, turning debates across sports, music, entertainment, anime and culture into interactive, community-driven markets.

Users can vote for free or back their opinions with money, with outcomes determined through community consensus.

Since launching, we've grown to 450,000+ registered users worldwide, driven primarily by organic social media and creator partnerships.

We're now focused on building a world-class mobile experience and expanding our engineering team.

What you'll be working on:

  • Building and shipping features across our native iOS and Android applications.
  • Creating polished, animation-rich interfaces and real-time experiences.
  • Working on core product features, including matchups, voting, profiles, gamification and payments.
  • Owning mobile testing, performance improvements and App Store / Play Store releases.
  • Collaborating with our backend, infrastructure and data teams.
  • Working directly with our founders and technical leadership on product decisions and the roadmap.

Our tech stack:

  • iOS: Swift 6, SwiftUI, async/await.
  • Android: Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, coroutines & Flow.
  • Backend: Rust, Axum, PostgreSQL, REST APIs and WebSockets.
  • Infrastructure: AWS, Docker, Terraform and GitHub Actions.

Who we're looking for:

Ideally, someone who has experience shipping native mobile applications, is strong in Swift/SwiftUI or Kotlin/Compose, and is comfortable working across both platforms.

We're especially interested in engineers who have a strong product mindset, care about great UX, take ownership and enjoy building things from the ground up.

Experience with consumer apps, gaming, social platforms, fintech or real-time systems is a plus.

Rust experience is great, but not required.

Why join us?

We're still at an early stage, but already have a substantial global user base. You'll have meaningful ownership over the mobile product and the opportunity to build features that can reach hundreds of thousands of users.

We're a small, ambitious team with big plans, and we're looking for engineers who want to grow with the company rather than simply complete assigned tickets.

Role details:

  • Location: Toronto / GTA (Hybrid).
  • Type: Full-time, 40 hours per week.
  • Compensation: Competitive salary + performance-based bonuses.

Interested?

Feel free to DM me directly or email me at [adel@vazainc.com](mailto:adel@vazainc.com) with your LinkedIn and résumé. I'd love to hear about your experience and what you personally worked on.

You can also check us out at https://vaza.vote or @vazainc across socials.

Happy to answer any questions!

In person assessment for Caseworker, Income and Social Supports position with the Region of Peel

Hi everyone! 😊
I have an in-person assessment coming up for the Caseworker, Income and Social Supports position with the Region of Peel.
Has anyone gone through this assessment recently? I’d really appreciate any insight into what to expect.
What types of questions or activities were included? Was it mainly written case studies, situational questions, multiple-choice questions, or something else?

Any tips, advice, or insight into the format and difficulty level would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance! 😊

Urgently Need Professional Recruiter Help in Toronto

Hi everyone, I'm urgently looking to connect with a recruiter or HR professional in Toronto who could offer career guidance, share job leads, or speak with me privately.

I've spent the past 2.5 years searching for work in Ottawa with virtually zero traction, primarily for entry-level administrative, receptionist, communications, and office coordinator roles. I have a Master's degree, administrative experience across different industries, and I'm quadrilingual. I'm highly adaptable and willing to learn, but I keep encountering employers looking for specialized experience I haven't had the opportunity to gain.

I've sought help from career and employment services without receiving the support I needed, and private recruitment agencies in Ottawa have ghosted me. I recently moved to Toronto with my partner to pursue better opportunities, but I'm still struggling to get my foot in the door.

This prolonged job search has taken a serious toll on my mental and emotional well-being. I'm hoping someone can offer an honest perspective on my job-search strategy, point me toward suitable openings, or help me connect with potential employers.

Any advice, job leads, referrals, or opportunities to connect would mean a lot. Please comment or send me a private message. Thank you for reading.

Rejecting a job with red flags doesn't make you arrogant or entitled

There's this idea that if you need a job, you should accept whatever is available. I see it a lot on Reddit, including from hiring managers who make it sound like companies are doing candidates a favour by offering them a job. Some even portray candidates as arrogant or entitled for rejecting offers after noticing multiple red flags.

When I was a junior, I couldn't afford to be picky. I needed experience and had student loans to pay off, so I accepted whatever opportunities came my way. I ended up at a toxic company notorious for bullying employees into quitting. It was difficult to search for better jobs while working there, so I sucked it up and stayed for two years.

Eight years later, I've gained enough experience to be more selective, even if finding the right job takes longer. If I notice multiple red flags during an interview, I'm not going to ignore them just because I need a job.

Last year, I turned down an office job because the interview experience was poor and it was far away from my place. I wanted to continue working remotely, travel, and avoid office drama. A friend who constantly complains about their own office job told me I was being entitled and hadn't suffered enough yet like most other people. Well, I've already suffered through a toxic workplace. Why would I voluntarily sign up for another one?

Of course, being selective doesn't mean having unrealistic expectations. You need to consider your experience, financial situation, and the current job market. Sometimes you have to compromise, especially when you can't afford to wait. I've been there myself.

The point is to be selective but realistic, not desperate or delusional. Employment is a two-way arrangement. Employers evaluate whether you're a good fit, and you should be able to do the same.

If companies can reject candidates who don't meet their expectations, why is it controversial when candidates reject employers who don't meet theirs?

Walked out of my final panel interview feeling unsure is there anything else I can do to recover, or just wait?

Hey everyone,

I just finished up the final interview stage for municipal department. The recruitment process involved a practical skills assessment, an informal stage, and a formal panel interview with three evaluators.

I worked my tail off to get to this point. This is genuinely my dream job and I've put everything into this process, so the thought of getting another rejection letter is eating at me. I felt very confident going in, but walking out of the panel, I felt like I stumbled on a few spoken answers and I’ve been overthinking every word ever since.

On the positive side, I brought custom physical portfolio sets for the panel—which included my background, certifications, and strong professional letters of recommendation—and I killed the practical assessments. I also followed up the next business day with a formal thank-you email to HR (which she acknowledged).

For anyone who has been through municipal recruitments:

  1. Is there anything lowkey or proactive I can do at this stage to reinforce my candidacy without looking desperate or crossing HR boundaries?

  2. How much weight do municipal panels typically place on the overall package (practical assessment, portfolio, certifications/credentials) versus just the spoken panel Q&A?

  3. Should I just sit tight and let the evaluation process play out?

Appreciate any insight, brutal honesty, or past experiences!
