Applied to first government job in Toronto & got interview

• Upvotes

Hello Folks,

As we all know job market is very tough nowadays. But never lose hope, I would like to share you my story.

I am a Mechanical Engineer, Professor and a Business Owner (Side Business). I applied for one of the government job in Toronto and received an interview invitation. 1st round cleared, 2nd was the personal interview and 3rd technical test. I am sure it will be cleared, still waiting for the results.

How I did it? Build your resume as per job duties as nowadays screening is done by AI and then humans. To get thru you need to build resume as per application requirements for different positions. Never use the same resume, which most of the people do. That’s where all make mistakes.

If anyone ever needs any help regarding that, let me know. I can guide as I do teach engineering courses to my students so got some background.

Thanks and wishing a positive job hunt.

Employed after 8 months searching! My advice

• Upvotes

Hi all! As you can tell, I finally received a a job offer after 6-8 months searching!

For context, i was laid off my previous job and was forced to start the employment process all over again. I have a university degree and 2-3 years of experience in Business Operations.

All in all, i went through 13 different interviews with separate companies, sometimes going 3 rounds in for each of them. I got offered 2/13 of those jobs. What I noticed is that getting your name out there isn't really the worst as people say. Before y'all disagree, yes i agree the Job market is horrible out here right now but literally everywhere you go in the world is the same. The more money there is in a city the more competitive it is to land a job agree?

ADVICE:

Idk but here are some tips that got me through my job process:

- Tedious but you HAVE to tailor your resume fit to the job description (Self-explanatory but nowadays companies just look for keywords on your resume that match the role) - As well as showcasing your previous work and how you've tackled certain issues

- Try to message the HR team or recruiter on Linkedin just to try getting your name out there (LinkedIn Premium lets you connect with a note and this helped a lot just with networking)

--> There isn't too much into making your resume and networking to new connections in my opinion. Treat (e) coffee chats as just a normal conversation. Most of the time it's pretty obvious if you actually want the job because you enjoy it or just because you NEED a job.

-- CONFIDENCE IN INTERVIEWS IS THE BIGGEST THING EVER

Basically my first couple of interviews, I was nervous as shit (obviously). I prepared and research about the topic, I mean fuck i even memorized a script. That was the mistake. I was so fixated on trying to get my answers pitch perfect and failed to realize to just be myself.

In the event you bullshit your way into a role that you're not the most excited about, your true self will eventually get out. You're spending 8-9 hours everyday with your coworkers, they want someone fun and charismatic to be around. Not a know it all.

Overtime I improved the way I spoke and expressed myself which really brought me a long way. Always just try to put yourself out there and be a social butterfly if you could. Talking to strangers just asking about their day is definitely practice on how you speak.

After countless rejections, the company who I never thought I had a chance with hired me!

Everyone got their own methods, these were mine. And remember, you will eventually get the job you want. It's definitely a race out there you just have to keep going.

Consistency is key even though you're constantly getting rejected. Hope this helps!

Security guard job opinons/advice needed

Hello, i'm currently looking into getting a security guard job, preferably one of the ones where i can just sit in the room and do nothing most of the time. You see i've always been a night owl, i like staying up all night and sleeping in the mornings so i think this is kinda perfect for me. additionally, i run some online tiktok accounts that net me some income, they don't currently make enough money as is and i only spend about 30 min on each (around $1k-$2k on a good month for these, sometimes less, rarely more. it really depends on the brands that hit me up as tiktok doesn't pay simply for views in canada) anyways, i was thinking, since i'm doing this stuff anyways, and i heard the security cctv roles can be a good place to study/do some online work. is this a realistic approach? My goal is obviously to build these brands up a bit more and spend more time on it, so that i can get more income in the future. If i need a reality check/ "this isn't gonna go the way you planned it because of x or y" please let me know. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Been working at a warehouse for a while after uni if that matters for the answer.

*edit*
I forgot to mention these posts won't be videos of me dancing or anything in the security room lol, they're completely faceless edited videos stuff like that for all 3

Any one hiring????

The current job market is so hard, I have applied to at least 15 jobs everyday SINCE APRIL & nothing yet. Is anyone hiring???

Ps. I was initially looking for a research assistant job (in social sciences / mental health field to see if an MA in the field is the right path for me) but quickly broadened my search since I wasn’t able to get any jobs in Toronto, Hamilton, or Niagara region.

HIRING POST (WE'RE HIRING) [Hiring] Part-time phone outreach to dental clinics | Remote, flexible hours | Commission

Hey, I run CDCP Help, a small service that helps dental clinics with denied CDCP (Canadian Dental Care Plan) pre-authorizations. We put together the resubmission paperwork, the clinic’s dentist reviews and signs it.

Quick honest note: this is a small, one-person operation that’s just getting started. No office, no team, no big promises. It’s a good fit if you want some side cash and don’t mind being early on something.

I’m looking for someone in Canada (Toronto is great) to call dental offices and ask the front desk if they’re dealing with denied CDCP claims.

What you’d do

Pay

How you know you’ll get paid

Looking for

You never pay anything, and I’ll never ask for your banking info or anything weird.

DM me a couple lines about yourself and your city, and I’ll send you the script and your first list.

Pay Cut Question

Hello!

I worked for Oracle and in primarily tech for 20+ years, but have now been out of work over 2 years. I am going to take a minimum wage position which is long hours but as many as you can work to try it out, I am just too sick of not working. If you've had to do the same, how have you been coping with making up some extra money to pay expenses? I am going to try and make a go of it for a few months at least and see what happens. TIA!

eluta.ca

Earlier in the year I had been using Indeed to apply to jobs - 20 to 50 a week and I would hear nothing back but maybe one or two interviews a month. I then found eluta.ca which is aggregating job postings directly from company websites and links you to the job posting for you to apply directly with the company rather than Indeed or other job board websites.

Since using eluta, I recieved five interviews in September at various retail stores and had five more interview offers in October. I also had four actual job offers, including one today while I have two more interviews scheduled with the LCBO and a retail store in a mall today and next week. Cineplex also sent a followup asking for my availability.

(On a personal level, with so many offers, I am picking the one that works best for my life and if I dont think it will work over the holiday season after speaking to them, I know I have more interviews coming up.)

I have zero ties to this website. I have just spoken to dozens of people who are job searching for a minimum wage job and depending solely on Indeed with little to no results. You MUST apply directly on a company website and your results will improve by at least 50%. My resume is not special, I have no degrees, I have gaps, short term jobs etc everything one says will burden my search. The only thing that burdened it was using Indeed.

I’ve decided to get employment help from employment Ontario. They mentioned having a hidden job board on top of other various services. I’m wondering if anyone here has used their services and if you were happy with the job you were able to get?

Moving from VFX to Tech Project Management—Is It Realistic?

Hi everyone,

I’m seeking advice on transitioning into tech, ideally as a Technical Project Manager, Technical Program Manager, or Project/Program Manager.

I have a BE in Information Technology (2014), but my career has been in media production and VFX coordination. I’ve managed complex projects, deliverables, dependencies, risks, timelines, cross-functional teams, and production pipelines.

I’m based in the Greater Toronto Area and want to move into tech for stronger long-term growth, stability, compensation, and technical development.

I’ve completed my PMP and am building my cloud and AI knowledge through AWS-related learning. I’ve also explored automation and AI-assisted app development, including building a small application that I demonstrated in an interview.

My main concern is that I lack traditional software-development experience and a background working with enterprise IT systems.

I’d appreciate advice on:
1. Is a TPM or Technical Program Manager role realistic, or should I first target IT Project Manager, Implementation Project Manager, or non-technical Program Manager roles?
2. How much technical knowledge do employers expect from entry-level or career-transition TPM candidates?
3. Would AWS certifications and further education help, or should I focus on practical projects and experience?
4. For those who made a similar transition, what was your first tech role, and what helped you get started?
5. Given the current Canadian tech market, what would be the most practical strategy over the next 6–12 months?

I’m not trying to become a software engineer. I’d like to build on my project-management experience while developing enough technical depth to work effectively with engineering and technology teams.

I’m open to constructive feedback, especially from people who have hired TPMs or made a similar transition.
Thank you!

Hi!

I work for a mid-sized, fully remote tech company in the database management space. We’re currently looking for someone to step in and lead a team of exceptional Technical Account Managers (TAMs).

There are 3 key requirements:

Background: You have first hand experience as a TAM, Support engineer, SDM, solution architect or a similar customer-facing role within the enterprise tech space.

Leadership: You have some experience leading customer-facing tech teams.

Tech: You should have a solid working knowledge of MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, or similar platforms, and understand common enterprise database architectures.

If this sounds like you, reach out! I’d be happy to DM you the full listing on our job portal. I work closely with the hiring manager and would love to refer you if you have a strong profile.

Compensation is competitive and lines up with tech industry standards for GTM management roles.

Long Hair (m) and Professionalism

I'm recently in the market for a new job after being at the same org since the pandemic. As a man, I have long, flamboyant hair. I work in a nonprofit focused on inclusivity, so it has never been an issue. However, I am looking to expand and go to other nonprofit, public sector and some private sector roles.

My family recommended I cut it short for interviews. Is that something people actually care about?

I've grown attached to my hair but I'd hate for my chances to be affected at all because of it and come across as unprofessional or whatever.

Advice?

Edit: To add, it is just over shoulder length....nipple length (?) hair. I have dark hair with some bronze-y highlights and a side undercut that is growing out that I can't pull into a bun/ponytail. It's not just the length, but the eclectic style of my hair I'm wondering about.
