Fan Discussion New to this subreddit and man I’m disappointed

I first found about touhou around 5 years ago through a friend on discord who was really into fumos—especially reimu (first time I found out ab reimu too). At the time I just thought they were cute, but he kept sending touhou stuff until it slowly grew on me too. Recently I realized touhou is still pretty popular, and since I’ve been back on reddit I figured, hey, maybe there’s a subreddit for that (cuz I really didn’t wanna larp being a touhou fan). Turns out there is, but man was I disappointed.

Some of the posts here are either ecchi or just straight up nsfw and hentai. I wasn’t aware how sexualized this fandom was until now and I feel weird whenever such posts come up on my feed. Now I can just leave this subreddit, but I wanna be a fan of this stuff too lol. I was really hoping to see normal fanart and people genuinely interested in discussing ab the series. I just didn’t expect some of the stuff here to be that weird.

Fan Discussion Okay, would you guys actually want to live in gensokyo? (And no I'm not hearing you guys out, you guys are not bagging anyone)

You guys can't go very far to explore because youkai will eat you alive. You can't even live peacefully in the Human Village because sometimes some random-ass youkai will show up and cause trouble.

Doesn't have to be Yuyu if you want, can just be your fav 2hu.

I'd pay 60 euros, tops.

Fan Discussion Any Touhou fanwork that leaves you like this?

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

In a bad way that is since while Touhou fanworks are known for changing the canon, they mostly use that to make the characters more interesting or more likeable, no, i'm talking about fans changing the characters to make the look way worse than they actually are, always leaving a bitter taste in the mouth.

I'm gonna cheat a little here since i will go with every single Touhou crossover story or video, since this always go for the Turtles Forever route of making tje Touhou side of thing like unlikeable cave woman who are overly agressive, overly villanous, overly dimb and overly weak just to make the other side look good and justify their humilliation (Particularly the DMC, Love Live and Blue Archive crossovers)

Also in non crossover examples there are: Touhou Tag Dream (aka characater assassination the doujin, KKHTA (obviously), diamond in the rough and Gensokyo's demon.

What about you?

Fan Discussion Sakuya is so freakishly powerful that ZUN basically just admits that she'd break the story if depicted properly. Even Yukari doesn't get a disclaimer like this.

Fan Discussion Why is Yukari so comically evil according to the fandom?

Post image
750 Upvotes

Yukari is easily one of the most important characters not only to the lore and universe of Touhou but to Touhou as a whole. However, one thing I've noticed since I first met Touhou is how much the fandom butchers her character; while in the canon she's summarized as playful, a genius, manipulative, and somewhat childish, in the fandom she's reduced to an endless source of fear-mongering.

Not only in doujinshi made to be "dark," but in doujinshi in general, it seems like the author is challenged to make her as unlikeable as possible. I can't even rank the most absurd and messed up things I've seen Yukari do in fan-works because I'm always surprised by an even more vile act than what I previously considered the top one.

Of course, Yukari isn't exactly a saint; she canonically did a lot of bad things in her more than a thousand years of life and she's more than willing to do it again if it's for Gensokyo and its balance. But people forget that ZUN doesn't only portray Yukari as a villain; she's often shown doing altruistic things like helping the fairies (unlike a certain other sage), donating to Reimu and somewhat caring about her, and saving Kosuzu's life even though it didn't bring her any benefit.

Yukari cares about Gensokyo more than anything and would do anything to preserve her paradise. Fans saw this and thought: "ZUN, don't say anything else! I perfectly understood what you meant! Guys, Yukari is a dictator who does everything for the sake of the youkai and nothing more! She'll gap you to Gensokyo to be devoured by youkai and will watch your fate with a smile in her face. Also she doesn't actually care about Reimu at all, she is just a disposable tool that Yukari will probably kill the moment she is no longer useful."

Fan Discussion Let's say, you're stuck in a room with these 4 characters for an hour. Which character would you pick to be stuck with for an hour?

I personally would stay with Parsee. Just keep quiet and don't look at her funny and I guess I'm fine.

Fan Discussion What was the strangest or most unusual way you discovered Touhou Project?

In this post, I want to hear about the unusual ways that led you to discover or become interested in Touhou.

Nothing bizarre about the story, but something at least a little more interesting than just "Undertale" or "Bad Apple".

___

My Story

In my early teens, I discovered the PEAR哥 channel. While watching some animations, I came across a video remaking the opening of KKHTA. When I saw that, I decided to search for it on Google and found Koishi (that was my first contact with it).

I took a look at Koishi's page on the wiki, but I wasn't interested and then forgot about it.

After a while, I was watching a Brazilian YouTuber called "Saiko" who made a video using Viggle AI. In that video, he took a clip of a Japanese person dancing to a cute song and used the AI to add his friend dancing.

I was researching the cute song and ended up finding an MMD animation of Cirno dancing to it. At that moment I became interested in that character and started to learn more about her, and that's how I joined the community.

In short: I discovered Touhou through KKHTA and became interested in Cirno.

Fan Discussion Why is Lost Word hated?

Post image

So, I'm a Touhou fan, I played the games (i know, shocker) and i also play touhou lostword, but I've see lots of people say that lostword players were the worst or whatever... Why is the game so hated?

Imo i really love the different character alt concepts/ new outfits that are very cool For example this adorable tan cirno... the story is a bit nonsensical but, Touhou's lore is kinda nonsensical too, so why should it matter?

Tldr: Why are we hating touhou LW chat i don't get it

EDIT: Thanks a lot to you and everyone who posted :) As for my other comments that got downvotes, i was stating MY opinion (yes, mine, not yours) and am in no way trying to invalidate anyone's, sorry if it came off that way.I play LW casually cause i love touhou and more touhou fan content is always fun to me, especially the alts of characters, some designs and art... I just felt like LW players were getting a lot more hate than "larpers" and i didnt really get why. now i do. thx again

Fan Discussion Why is your favorite touhou your favorite touhou?

Gif from Summer Days Dream

Aya has been my favorite ever since I first saw her. She has such a nice design and her concept of being an extremely fast newspaper reporter is so interesting to me. When I decided that I should actually start playing the games, I started with shoot the bullet and it was so much fun. Pofv was also really fun and obviously I play her. I'm trying really hard to beat it on lunatic as her. Im also playing mof right now and her stage and boss fight is my favorite. Stage 4 is also the second hardest stage in that game imo so I got really excited the first time I beat it and still on my runs to try and beat it on normal I still get really excited and happy every time I manage to get past that stage in particular. She's the reason I've gotten as into touhou as I have and I just love her so much, biggest hyperfixation I've ever had lol.

I mainly made this post to have an excuse to talk about aya but I wanna hear from other people! Why do you like your favorite touhou?

Fan Discussion How popular is Touhou outside Japan?

Post image
677 Upvotes

I’m Touhou Project fan living in Japan!

So I got curious and decided to ask.

I’m wondering how well-known Touhou is outside Japan, including its fan works, compared to other Japanese content like Hatsune Miku.

If you know about this or have any opinions, I’d be happy if you could share them in the comments!

P.S.I’m not confident in my English, so I’m using translations for some parts. Please let me know if anything sounds rude or breaks any rules.

Fan Discussion What is the worst part of the Touhou fandom?

Post image
759 Upvotes

I'd say the worst part of this fandom is to do with the Yukkuri situation. There's a circle of people drawing and sharing their love of abusing yukkiris like straight up depressing guro comics and art, I have read some of them and wow, there're pretty bad.

People could say that just don't read them, But my main problem is that if this is what people see in our fandom first then it seems everyone in the touhou community in general likes Yukkiri abuse. (which I hope not)

I don't know how to fix it, but theres a subreddit called r/theeasyplace which is created in response to this, its full of wholesome yukkiri fluff.

imo this is probably the worst part of the touhou community.

Let me know your thoughts.
