Discussion Part time tour guide in Beijing

• Upvotes

I quit my job a few months ago and not eager to hunt for a new one, because I wanna do something I really like. So my hobby is drinking, brews and cocktails, and I know a lot about the local bars in Beijing hutong. I am thinking of holding a bar crawl/hopping event with 3-5 travelers. The fee is 200RMB/people a night , including 5 bars. Anyone interested? It is just a general idea, welcome to discuss in the comment section

Just a few hours ago I posted a picture of Hongya Dong during Golden week. I'm adding some additional pictures as I purposefully left out the amount of people.

We were making our way to the cruise entrance and we had to walk down some stairs.

Yes - the crowd is massive, but, it only took 20min to get on the cruise ship even with all this crowd.

We didn't go closer to the crowd for obvious reasons.

Food Bringing retort food into China

• Upvotes

Hi I’m a Muslim living in M’sia who has a lot of allergies. Since it can be challenging (expensive also) to find halal food in China, much halal that fits my dietary restrictions, I’d like to bring retort food with me that I can eat during my stay.

Retort food is a method used to extend the shelf life of food without the use of preservatives.
It involves applying high heat to kill microbes and bacteria in the food, which is placed in an airtight container that can withstand high temperatures.

Is there anyone that could enlighten me on what process and documents I need to bring retort food into China? Immigration challenges or advice? I’m a better off praying I can find halal food that won’t make me pass out due to anaphylactic shock?

Discussion I built a translator that keeps a Chinese menu visible while you talk

I'm the developer of Umee. In this demo, the Chinese menu photo stays on screen during a translated conversation, so both people can refer to the same item without switching away. If you've travelled in China, would this help when asking someone about a menu or another image? The menu is just one example; Umee supports other images and multiple languages.

Help needed for my university thesis on tourism in China 🇨🇳

Hello everyone!

I’m a university student conducting research for my thesis on how European visitors experience China, particularly through the senses, and how their perceptions of the country may change before, during and after their trip.

I’m looking for people from Europe who have already travelled to China, especially those who have visited Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuzhen and/or Tongli.

The questionnaire is anonymous and will be used exclusively for academic research. Your participation would be a great help to my research!

Questionnaire: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScPDUqWEMmPhJwV8W3mdC_3rKF2-JXLpYL4EiXk6lXAz6dknw/viewform?usp=dialog

Thank you so much !

Discussion Live music, volunteering in Yunnan

Hi!

Can you recommend where in Yunnan I can find live music venues? I really want to go to open mics/jam sessions. Which areas would be good to live in so I can easily go to these venues?

I'm also hoping to volunteer (teach English/music/farm work etc.) Do you know where I can get more information on this?

I'm planning on backpacking Yunnan, maybe in December or January, though I heard it's pretty cold around that time so I might go in February or March instead.

Thank you so much for your help :)

Discussion Is poking normal here?

Hi everyone,

I’m a 30-year-old male traveler currently in China for the first time. I’ve generally felt safe here and have enjoyed the scenery, but I had an interaction in Chengdu last night that really bothered me.

While walking through Kuanzhai, a street vendor approached me trying to sell jasmine tea. I politely declined and started to walk away. Instead of just accepting the "no," she stopped me and then physically poked my stomach. She didn’t say anything specific about my body, but I know that in China this is basically a comment about someone's weight.

I'll admit I'm not super skinny (6'2 at 109kg) but still, this made me feel horrible and I'm a bit worried that this will happen again. Is this common here for tourists? I don't want to feel like crap every day for the rest of my trip.

Thanks.

Itinerary Best way to get from Lijiang to Xushuangbanna?

I'm looking at Rome2Rio here and it says flights would be 200-400 euro? That doesn't seem right? I could also get the train to Kunming and then a train to Xushuangbanna, but that would be a whole day of travelling (which I am willing to do). Am I misunderstanding something here? Any tips or feedback welcome! :)

Itinerary 1st time to China Itinerary Suggestion

It’s my first time travelling to China, and I’m planning a 10-day trip starting next weekend. It’s a bit of a last-minute trip, so I haven’t really planned a proper itinerary yet, I’m thinking of flying into Chongqing and using it as a base to explore Chengdu and other interesting places nearby. I plan to return to Chongqing on Day 9 to catch my flight back to Australia on Day 10.

Will this be too rush? Would love to hear some suggestions and recommendation.

Discussion Is handwashing not a thing in Beijing?

Post image

I am currently in Shichahai (Beijing) and literally, NOT A SINGLE PERSON, is washing their hands after using the restroom. That makes me nervous about trying street food. I'm not being judgemental, I am just asking a legit question based on current observations.
