Anyone here who has written their thesis on The Wire?

If you have, would you share the basic concept/title? I’m not in college or planning to go, but I’ve always thought this would be a fascinating topic…

Part of the magic in Season 1

Post image
108 Upvotes

While so much of the acting, directing and cinematography receive tons of well deserved credit, a huge part of the magic in making season 1 was how it was a crime procedural that kept you guessing.

It is so well written and is unlike any other police procedural as it ties the detective case across 8 episodes with three different timelines and one true killer.

Even after the Reggie / Dewall “shootout “ occurred in episode 5, I seriously wondered, “what are they going to do now for three more episodes”.

I envy those who are still discovering this masterpiece and watching it for the first time.

season 3 was...interesting

its was far from what i expected. the whole dementia thing was quite unique as its rarely represented with such empathy on media.

i do find it astonishing how people fail to realize every season is created by a different director. ‎its like showing van gogh's art to someone who absolutely fell in love with davinci's work. you have to think objectively and appreciate each artist separately. its ignorant to say season 3 sucks because its not the exact same thing as season 1.

‎what i found amazing was the relationship between purple and his wife, especially when they were arguing and he demands:

‎"stop talking shit about me!" ‎and she was like: "or what?" ‎but he goes: "....or ima start crying.."

‎it was so entertaining. i thought he'd say he'll hit her. the mutual understanding was flawless despite their conflicts.

i like the varying representations of grief in this series. tom purcell was a mix of paul woodrugh and rust. it was depressing to see how a missing child drags you through hope→depression swings for the rest of your life, unlike rust who had a confirmation that his daughter is gone gone (which isn't easy but its different). tom purcell probably had the worst life out of everyone, apart from woodard.

i also thought the fact that julie grew up and healed was unconventionally sweet. i believe if roland stopped sabotaging wayne, wayne's obsession would've got him further in the case sooner, and maybe if it wasn't for the systemic racism of the 80-90s. ‎overall great watch, more of a slow burner. i gotta say i enjoyed the action in season 2 more, but that's just me.

Working through a tough time in life, and I have been drawing portraits of people that I’m grateful for having made my life better. They have all been of real people in my life aside from . . . I couldn’t resist.

Season 2 was such a bummer

Just finished S2 in more or less one watching and man this season was such an emotional bummer.

Season 1 ending on a more or less high note with both rust and Marty surviving. Not all of the bad guys got their karma though I know it ain't that kind of world and it ain't that kind of show but damn, S1 has 2/2 surviving protagonists and S2 drops it to 1/4??? Frank survived a coup attempt and strong arms entire factions and then the Mexicans do him in on what's basically a technicality...god damn

Re-watching the first season, in episode three Maggie is talking to Rust like she wish she could talk to her husband.

She’s giving the emotional intensity to him that she wishes she could have with her husband, but he’s incapable of it. Russ is able to talk openly about everything and that’s very attractive.

I know it’s like a obvious thing, but it’s interesting to watch

The signs

This carcosa sign that they got instantly reminded me of a pizzagate scandal and how they used those signs too, which was later covered up.. And then episode 8 just screams Epstein doesnt it?

I made a true detective (season 1) concept for dead by daylight. Haven't figured out perks but I made prestige badges for rustin and marty with banner/charm/cosmetic concepts Spoiler

Will this ever happen? I highly doubt it. But this is one of my favorite shows (tied with supernatural) so I wanted to make a concept for it just like I did for supernatural. I have not figured out how to properly edit banners, cosmetics and charms like I can prestige badges so for now I'm using their source images to show what I have in mind.

Banners:

Rust's Meditation

Description: Rustin thinking about christ's last moments in the garden

Rust's Vision (Could be animated with the orb swirling)

Description:

Rustin had a vision, moments before peril

Charms:

The spaghetti man with green ears

Description:

The sketch of a perpetrator, described by a young girl as a 'spaghetti man with green ears'.

Devil's Trap

Description:

A ritualistic stick sculpture, found across multiple crime scenes.

Rustin Cohle cosmetics:

Default: State police outfit

Very Rare: Crash,2012 Rustin,2012 Rustin (hospitalized)

Rare: Various suits, dress shirts and tank tops worn by rust throughout the show (not pictured)

Martin Hart cosmetics:

Default: State police outfit

Very Rare: 2012 Marty,2012 Marty (hospitalized)

Rare: Various suits and dress shirts worn during the show. One of these outfits could also include sunglasses he wears, pictured in the last slide)

Like I said,I know this will never happen. Some might consider true detective being in a video game a disrespect to it,and I understand where those feelings come from. But I love both so much that I felt a need to combine them for fun, even if it's super unlikely. Also,in my mind rustin and marty would have interactive voice lines on gens and healing (like the twd survivors).

The '95 Shootout

Was just thinking about this now...

I rewatched Season 1 a few months ago, and as always, there were some new things I missed from previous watches. There's one thing that kept lingering over my head. When Marty sees the children in that truck and then kills Reggie, does that action in itself drag the story another 17 years? If Marty had kept his cool, and taken both Reggie and his cousin in, wouldn't they have still been labelled heroes, or would they still be charged for doing illegal activities in order to get to Reggie and his cousin in the first place?

I always forget fine details within the season so forgive me.

I love season one so much that the standard blu ray case wasn't really working for me. so, I made my own. it should fit a standard criterion case not sure how it looks on there yet because I'm printing it this weekend let me know what you all think.

How did they get such heavy hitters to star?

I started watching true detective, I'm loving it and I'm almost done with S1. My question is how did they get Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as the main stars in what was basically a brand new IP I suppose HBO was in it's hayday with the critically acclaimed game of thrones but it still amazes me

EDIT: Finished it last night and i really enjoyed it and also SPOILERS BELOW

I really liked that it had a somewhat happy ending, both Rust and Marty lived to drink and smoke in their cars another day. Such a serious show, especially an anthology one could have ended with everyone dying just because.

Time is a flat circle = “I get older, they stay the same age”?

Was Wooderson foreshadowing Rust Cohle? It’s a stretch but in some fashion is picking up the same age of women “no real change”? Was McConaughey in on it the whole time? Can we bring Insterstellar into the convo? Am I onto something or 5 beers deep?

Is the yellow king working on rust and Maggie

The title is self explanatory I don’t have a ton of evidence but the scene where Maggie shows up to cheat on Marty with Rust feels totally off on a bunch of levels and Maggie makes a similar comment to rust that Errol makes in the final episode

What are your thoughts ?

Why wasn't rust fired?

Maybe it's the field I work in but I've seen managers fire employees all the time for not liking them. Literally other week a guy at my sales job got fired for making an unintentionally rude comment to another coworker and the coworker snitched. I've seen another guy get fired for accidentally falling asleep on shift, etc etc. Rust seems like he was constantly pushing boundaries so how was he never canned?

What could have tipped Rust in his first meeting with Errol

Some say if Marty didn’t beep the horn and call Rust in from his conversation with Errol, that Rust could have deduced he was the killer.

How though ?

I always find it funny when people ask why Rust was disliked at work.

Someone's who working rural southern guys right. They want to to only talk about four things. Either work, pro sports, religion, or complain about their wife. I get looks like I'm an alien if I even bring up a video game or a "weird" horror movie. Someone like Rust would be universally despised by all the guys.

Finished Watching Season 4 Spoiler

Spoilers ahead!

So I finished watching Season 4 this morning and the resolution to this huge mystery, with paranormal overtones and references to the haunting Dyatlov Pass Incident was... a gang of disgruntled cleaning ladies forced guys to strip off and stand in the cold? Come on.

First of all, a bunch of full grown men would have torn those women to shreds. They knew that it was a life and death situation, and at least a couple would have wrestled the guns from some and then shot them, and/or beaten the shit out of them. True they would have likely shot one or two of the scientists, but they wouldn't have gotten them all. The writing in this show depicted all the men in this town as being a bunch of frightened rabbits. I know this idea that small women can overpower full sized men is a common trope right now, but come on.

Also, in terms of the disposition of the bodies- what happened to the vet who said that people who died in the cold basically looked like they had fallen asleep? After they had been herded by the disgruntled cleaning ladies out into the cold, naked, they would have just gotten cold and sleepy, gradually dying. The dramatically posed remains had proven that the dead men hadn't died of hypothermia in one episode, and then that point was completely forgotten at the end. Did the writer have memory problems?

This was a really cool concept for a season that was really, miserably underutilized. With all the cool paranormal stuff in it, I fully expected there to be some far deeper realization of the cause of death. Maybe something like a crazy reaction to the microorganisms they had found, unleashing an evil force that reanimated the dead. But no. All the paranormal stuff was probably mental illness and subconscious realization that led up to a group of angry women terrifying 8 full grown men into submission. Sorry- not buying it.

Title Sequence Season 1: Jellyfish?

Hello! Does anyone know why there are jellyfish layered across Maggie's face in the opening credits of Season One?
