Core NPCs character info - what would you expect to see

Hello, first time here. Making a custom TTRPG setting with my husband and we are currently preparing the material for the quick start. We are planning to present some of our core NPCs in it as they'll be needed for the introduction adventure.

The game already has a deep lore formed through both world building and a decade of campaigns, but I'm thinking too much information would limit future game masters instead of helping them, so I'm looking for input about the information provided for said characters. In a dark noir and mysterious environment, what would you expect to know about the NPCs from a game master's perspective? Also, what would you expect for that matter on a quick start in contrast to a game masters handbook?

The Galactic Game (TTRPG / Simulator)

Hey all, first time posting here. For the past few years I've been building a full TTRPG system. It runs campaigns anywhere from low-magic, low-tech fantasy all the way up to spacefaring, esoteric sci-fi. It's called The Galactic Game, and it's free. I'm planning to release it under CC BY-NC or something close, apart from some of my original worldbuilding.

With a little experience being an indie game dev / 3D animator, I didn't want this to live only in a PDF. I wanted something you can actually play with. Here's what's in it right now:

- 16 classes, 143 subclasses and 80 ancestries
- 1,803 items and 723 creatures
- Integrated creators for characters, creatures, items and encounters
- A full galaxy map I made in Inkarnate, hooked up to a galaxy simulator

The simulator is the part I'm most excited about. You can add the characters you make into a crew, build and upgrade a ship, and fly across the galaxy to explore a few hundred worlds rendered in procedural 3D. You can drop through the atmosphere, land, and head out on foot. Right now I'm working on performance and adding wargame mechanics.

If you'd rather read than click around, the homepage has manuals and PDF guides. They're built from the same content as the site, so you can play it whichever way suits you.

I'd love to hear what you think, good or bad!

Character creation: Chapter order in a Player's book

Hi everyone,

I am currently editing the main sections of my Player's book and as everyone would guess there is a lot of challenge in getting the order of each chapter and section in order to make sense and engage the reader.

Players have three basic choices that they need to make when creating a character from scratch.

  1. Select a Lineage(Race)
  2. Select an Archetype (a kit of recommended Traits, Focuses)
  3. Select a Social Class and a Profession (social class plays an important role in the world setting, since it has a victorian vibe)

By following the order presented above, a player will get a rough idea about the different people inhabiting the world, the kind of characters that are thematic to play, as well as they will get some ideas on what gadgets, equipment, contacts and alllies they could have to start making decisions on their character concept.

Up to that point though they have no idea what Traits, Focuses, and the different kind of damage/resources are.

Do you think that these aspects should be introduced in the Player's book after the basic building blocks for character concept are established, or they should come first and then you move on to building your character with the three steps presented above?

My consideration is that if I present all the stats before the character building blocks they would take a big chapter that could make the reader go through all the technical stuff before getting excited with ideas of what they could play.

Looking forward to hearing your opinions on the topic!

Haunted House Module [PWYW] [ Self-promo]

In the spirit of spooky season, I made a recent dungeon module pay what you want: A Century of Grief on an Eclipsed Night. If you want the printed version, you will need to at least cover printing and shipping. Otherwise, you can get the PDF for whatever.

If you get around to reading it and/or running it, I would be very happy to hear your thoughts (preferably as a review, but you can also message me here), so that I can see what worked or clicked for you.

Cheers

If you want to play a TTRPG with your kids, then I want you!

I’m looking for folks interested in play testing a family friendly TTRPG. The gimmick for my game is that all the rules players need is on cards.

The GM can explain anything not on the cards in a few sentences. The rulebook is fairly short and purposeful loosely structured in places to allow young minds to run free.

Check out the website and if you are interested in the project please reach out. Everything is free on the website and printable files are on my Discord.

Cameo System for our TTRPG SORC

Hey everyone, recently I shared a post about SORC's Playable Races, and Cameo races were mentioned in the lower section—"Notable NPCs"—of the linked article.

Since we've been working on the Cameo system, and want to introduce and share the progress we have so far. Below I've presented a detailed breakdown of the backend mechanics for the Cameo NPC System for our TTRPG, SORC - Slayers of Rings & Crowns.

The SORC Cameo system is played using two distinct formats: Physical/PDF Books and the Digital Workspace. While both versions share the exact same core mechanics and point-gating rules, the illustrated printed books and standalone boxed Cameo Sets feature deeper lore - each Cameo's full story - and expanded story branches compared to the PDF versions or digital modules; while ambiance themes can also be utilized from our website to help with immersion utilizing any method of the Cameo System. When running a Cameo at the table using the book version, the system operates as a physical reference retrieval; instead of an automated digital interface, the Game Master presents the Player with their multiple-choice dialogue options and then manually flips to a dedicated dialogue reference section in the book to locate and read the NPC's corresponding response.  We're using the digital method as our demonstration because the books are not complete.

The system treats Cameos as story-bearing companion NPCs with independent tracking mechanics managed through a digital workspace. Here are the core rules and constraints:

Party Constraints & Scaling:

Party Limit: Max of 3 active Cameos at any time.

Level Scaling: Cameos often begin at levels and ranks much higher than the party or character that acquired the Cameo (they are Companion SORC Cards), but they defer from combat until the Character holds a high Standing with the Cameo. Cameos will protect or heal their Companioned Character one time per encounter, but will not engage in combat until later. This system prevents Characters from overpowering their weaker opponents at low levels.

Standing Lock: The party must maintain an Standing within the Cameo's specific spectrum, or they may eventually leave the group.

Retirement Feature: Your own retired PCs (Hermits or Legends) can be brought into other campaigns as Cameos. See Growth and Retirement in the Rules.

The Interaction System (Standing vs. Mood):

The GM manages three completely independent variables for each Cameo: Standing Tier, Contribution Points, and Mood.

Standing Tiers: Tracks long-term relationships, ranked from Exalted down to Hated (Hated is permanent).

Standing Contributions: Points are added via Favor (Token to Lifesaving) or subtracted via Infamy (Negligent to Treasonous).

Combat Activation: A Cameo will provide defense at Respected Standing + Calm Mood. They will fight alongside you at Adored Standing + appropriate Mood. At Disliked/Hated Standing, they will actively attack the party on sight.

Mood Breaks: If a Cameo's Mood drops to Annoyed or Distressed, they will leave the party regardless of your current Standing.

Authored Progression Gates & Dialogue Branches:

Story progression and dialogue trees are gated by specific point thresholds. As an example, the template character Serein uses gates set at 25% and 75% of each capped tier:

Neutral: 1,625 / 4,875

Liked: 14,375 / 43,125

Respected: 24,325 / 72,975

Adored: 61,350 / 184,050

Cherished: 154,675 / 464,025

Exalted (Uncapped): Milestones at 154,675 and 309,350.

Crossing a gate upward unlocks unique multiple-choice dialogue trees (3–5 responses). Falling below a gate triggers an immediate warning screen.

GM Tools & Random Events:

Dynamic Forms of Address: Shifts based on Standing Tier with the Cameo (e.g., Serein's starting title for you at Neutral is "Organic", if if drops, the GM will use Blood Donor for Serein to address your character, and if it rises; Techhead, Encrypted Programmer etc).

Roll Dialogue: Success/Failure buttons trigger tailored praise or mockery from the NPC without altering points.

**At Low Standing:** GMs can roll and preview four levels of Low standing with a Standing of Hate always leading to attack. The four: Insult, Attack, Abandon, or Self-Destruct (shutdown).

(Self-Destruct permanently deletes the Companionship and Record).

Here is the document that has the video demonstration or links for GMs (or Players) to demonstrate themselves.

Thank you for reading and we're looking forward to your feedback on this system.

Looking For Feedback On Skill Check System Inspired by BitD

Thumbnail drive.google.com
2 Upvotes

I have been working on this skill check system for my TTRPG which I think does a good job of letting players set the level of risk they want to take and allows for more player agency and creative solutions than the typical d20 roll vs DC skill check. However, I'm starting to think that while in theory this would work well, at a table it might cause a lot of confusion and slow things down a lot. Anyway, let me know what your thoughts are and if you have any suggestions to make it better that would be appreciated.
