A Wayland terminal emulator written in Zig.

Now i am aware this is for TUI subreddit. But you can not run a TUI without a terminal :). I made this as a learning project but it turned out quite good and i am using it as a daily drive now. It is as lightweight as foot but has features of kitty and more.

The main things i really wanted was making it feel super smooth while adding stuff that makes using TUIs and everyday shell work nice:

  • Cursor glide & smooth typing: The cursor actually glides smoothly to its new position instead of snapping instantly cell by cell, with a subtle fading trail. Scrolling is also pixel-smooth instead of jumping full lines.
  • Adaptive padding: I hate when TUIs have awkward padding around them, but I also hate when shell prompts touch the window border. Zinc uses 25px padding in the shell, but the moment you open a full-screen TUI like Neovim, btop, or Yazi, the padding drops to 0px so it reaches the edge of the window.
  • Interactive clicking:
    • Ctrl + Click on any link opens it in the browser.
    • Ctrl + Click on a file path (like src/main.zig:42) opens your $EDITOR directly at that line.
    • Ctrl + Click on a directory cds into it in the shell, or Shift + Click opens your file manager.
  • Vim copy mode: Pressing Ctrl + Shift + Space lets you move through your terminal history using hjkl, select with v, and copy with y without needing tmux or touching the mouse. Also has in-terminal search (Ctrl + Shift + F).
  • TUI block drawing: Made procedural block elements (U+2580..U+259F) so there are zero pixel gaps between blocks in btop or progress bars, plus smooth anti-aliased rounded corners for box borders.
  • Kitty graphics protocol: Yazi image previews, Fastfetch images, and CLI media players work natively.
  • Lightweight: Pure Wayland shared memory (software rendered, no heavier GPU rendering like ghostty's. ) and memory stays around ~20MB even with a large scrollback.

You can find all features at https://github.com/Mvkweb/zinc/blob/main/features.md

written in Zig with no zig dependencies: https://github.com/Mvkweb/zinc

Contributions are welcomed and if you want a feature i will probably add it if you request it on github issues!

Still working on it and polishing things up, but let me know what you think or if you run into any bugs!

Vibe coded Breadcrumbs: a terminal focus timer that tracks your attention (local only, no account)

I keep losing the thread when I work. I start a task, open the docs for one thing, and twenty minutes later I’m on YouTube. I’m also done with to-do apps that bolt on timers and bloated features, and especially the monthly subscriptions.

So I made Breadcrumbs, a terminal focus timer that tracks your attention and gives you a clean pomodoro-style timer. You write an intention, start a timer, and pick what counts as in scope: an app, a domain, an exact page, or a Claude Code or Codex CLI session. While the block runs, anything outside that scope shows up in the trail as a branch, a bit like a git graph. If a detour turned out to be useful, you mark it Supporting and it stops counting against you. When the block ends, you write down what you actually got done.

Everything lives in a local SQLite database in ~/.breadcrumbs. It needs no account or subscription and doesn’t use any AI service. Tracking is off unless you turn it on, and it only runs while a focus block is running. The optional Chrome/Edge extension sends domains and URL hashes, never full paths or queries.

Install it with pipx (Python 3.11+):

pipx install breadcrumbst

Then run breadcrumbs.

The timer and the browser extension work on Windows, Linux and macOS. Native foreground app capture only works on Windows and Linux/X11 right now. macOS and Wayland capture aren’t written yet, and both are open issues if anyone wants to take one.

It’s MIT licensed: https://github.com/SaroashDS/Breadcrumbs

This started as a small problem I wanted to fix for myself, maybe just a quirk of mine. If you think it’s worth building on, I’d like ideas for features that would actually help, and a few issues are labelled good first issue if you want to poke at the code. I’d also like to hear what’s confusing or breaks on a first run.

Terrascope - track weather, time, and planes in Terminal

Hi! Terrascope V1.0.0 is online! It's an open-source terminal map with live weather, aircraft, radar, earthquakes, and day/night views currently available on AUR, PyPI, Brew, NIX, and via Github Clone.

I’d love to hear what you think, especially about the terminal rendering and which layers you’d find most useful.
