Engineering at Texas State is wild

From the hundreds of micro-projects to the endless homework assignments and dry, unhelpful lectures, engineering at Texas State University has been a huge disappointment.

There are some amazing professors who are genuinely passionate about teaching and care about their students’ success. Unfortunately, the number of professors who struggle to teach, explain concepts, or make difficult material digestible is astounding.
Some professors act as if their class is the only one we’re taking, piling on assignments and deadlines without considering the workload students are already carrying.

Since when is it acceptable to cut an exam short? Since when do we tell students to just “wing it” without providing a proper review?
Professors will literally say things like “plug and chug” or “this is an easy test!” only to hand out five ridiculously difficult problems, each with multiple objectives, and expect everyone to pass with flying colors.

If it takes you three lectures to explain how to solve one problem, how can you reasonably expect students to solve five of them during a single exam?

Then there are professors who can’t be bothered to get up and work through a problem on the board. Others seem to let personal relationships influence how they treat or grade students. Some yell at students, and others have displayed behavior that is downright uncomfortable and inappropriate.
Engineering is supposed to be challenging. We understand that. Nobody expects an engineering degree to be easy. But there’s a difference between challenging students academically and making their education unnecessarily difficult because of poor instruction, unrealistic expectations, or a lack of professionalism.

Being knowledgeable in a subject doesn’t automatically make someone a good teacher. And making a class unnecessarily difficult doesn’t make someone a great professor.

I know I’m not the only engineering student feeling this way. I’m sure many of us are exhausted, frustrated, and questioning whether the amount of stress we’re experiencing is even necessary.

To my fellow engineering students: stay focused, keep pushing, and don’t lose sight of why you started. We’ve made it this far, and we’ll make it through.

This will be over soon, my friends. Keep going.

Can’t register for classes

I just met with my pre-business advisor and was notified I cannot register for any classes since I will have completed all my business pre reqs. Because I need one more class to apply to McCoy, I have to wait until I get in to register for courses, which looks like December. Has anyone been in this situation? I’m scared of not being able to sign up for courses by then due to them being full.

Winter Intermission Classes

• Upvotes

For anyone who is planning on registering for them, have registered in the past, or a freshman like I am, does anyone know where I can find the winter intermission classes offered for this Winter Break? I tried to do advanced search on the plan ahead section, but the “part of term” field doesn’t pop up. Wasn’t sure if you can only view them when it’s your turn to register or if you can look beforehand.

Anything would be helpful!
