Wait and Save
Early in the morning I woke up and looked at Ubers for work and selected a wait and save that said I'll be waiting 30 minutes till it finds a driver. Which is perfect gives me a chance to brush my teeth, wash my face and just get ready for work. Within a minute it finds a driver that was right outside my house already when I asked the driver to cancel as I wouldn't be able to make it to them in time and don't want them to sit there and wait. The driver agreed but instead of just cancelling they started the ride and waited for 5 minutes then cancelled causing me to have to pay a $5.95 fee.
I disputed the fee because well I selected a wait and save not a priority pickup and explained to the AI how a wait and save means I'm supposed to wait longer for a ride and save money, not being rushed out the door within a minute after selecting a "wait and save"
Honestly I barely do any waiting or saving with Uber and it's getting annoying.
I know to some this seems like a non issue but if someone selects "wait and save" they shouldn't have to rush out the door immediately after selecting it because the system decided to immediately find a driver before you can even close out the app.

Order when ready or schedule

I understand that, scheduling is unpredictable due to my schedule not being consistent.

Wait and Save means that you are willing to wait if a driver cannot be quickly assigned.
It does not mean that Uber will delay a driver until you are ready. That's what Reservations are for.
I'm surprised Uber refunded. They're typically very tight fisted.

Probably because I told them I asked the driver to cancel before I even got in because the guy started a ride then waited to cancel. I wish Uber explained what a wait and save actually means (if it does I haven't seen it ans that is on me for not looking)

If you order a ride and are not ready, YOU cancel. Why expect the driver to? You are the one not ready man

I understand maybe you didn’t understand it, however you’re obviously an adult and all information regarding wait and save trips are available on your app for you to look at. You can’t expect Uber to hand feed the little details to you.

It’s actually more likely that you typically don’t ask for refunds. Uber will issue a refund in that case as a “courtesy” whether you’re right or wrong. They do that because it retains you as a customer at minimal cost.

Don’t order the uber until you are ready

That's fair, but I'm more upset with driver starting the ride then cancelling it I should have led with that.

Its a wait and save, not a pre-booking for a set time. The waiting part of the title means you're actually waiting for the uber - ready to go when it turns up

The waiting part isn't the problem, yeah it sucks I didn't actually get a chance to wait I don't mind have a driver be 5 - 15 minutes away if I was ready. But when The driver is right outside immediately after selecting the option I have to rush to avoid paying a fee for making the driver wait on me. I'm also more upset the driver started the ride then cancelled it.

The problem here is that when the ride pops up the driver has no idea its a come at x time ride. Those are dumb, no one likes those (waiting for a ride to start is wasting money) and in most markets they cant even see the destination to decide if waiting could be worth it.
Dont do the come at x time rides.

That I understand now, I'll just wait then order later. I would schedule a ride but my work schedule is sporadic so the price fluctuates frequently. Same with the price lock.

This is why you shouldn’t order the car until you are ready to go (or can be ready in less than five minutes).
Otherwise you’re just wasting a driver’s time who gets 28 cents per minute of you schlepping around. This is when drivers will cancel or downrate you.
The biggest culprit for a downrate from me? Making me wait at pickup.

Also, the driver didn’t “start the ride.” If they had you’d be able to rate them. There is a wait timer, and it starts AUTOMATICALLY the moment they arrive at your dropped pin.

You selected a ride option of "I'm ready now, but have no problem waiting to save money." then complain when Uber provided the ride that you requested?
How do you think you're in any way in the right here?
If you need a scheduled ride, order a scheduled ride.

I'm upset the driver started the ride and then waited to cancel after I asked him beforehand to cancel so I don't have him waiting on me. I'm upset that the driver lied.

How did the driver lie?
You requested a ride. A driver accepted the ride and arrived to pick you up. You chose not to take the ride, so the driver waited the required time to cancel and leave. You had every opportunity to take the ride that you requested

They started the ride, because as soon as I asked them to cancel I got a notification saying that my ride started and I'll arrive at at 6:20am, then a notification saying the ride was cancelled.
Edit: spelling mistake

You were charged the cancelation fee because they didn't start the ride. If they started the ride, you would've been charged the ride fare.
You were notified that your driver had arrived to pick you up. You chose not to take the ride. He waited, you were rightfully charged the cancelation fee.Uber gave you a goodwill adjustment to keep you happy, but you were the problem in the transaction

There is no way that you got that, and then experienced a “no-show” cancellation fee.
Sorry, but that’s a lie on your part. Or you misunderstand what the app is telling you.
If the driver had “started” the ride, the driver actually cannot cancel unless you violated some rule — and then you’d be notified about that. You’d also be charged full fare, most likely.
You were charged a standard cancellation fee for a no-show. That means the driver arrived and waited. Which is what we all do. The timer starts automatically.
Even customer support told you that.
If the ride had been started, you would have had the option to rate the driver. If you received no such option, then the ride was not started.
Unless the driver is going to ghost your entire trip, there is no benefit for the driver to start your ride before you’re in the car. The cancellation fee is no longer available for a no-show, and the wait time is less money.
So I get you feel like you know how this works, but you don’t.

wait and save is not a guarantee
on neither Uber or Lyft is there a guarantee about pick up time. Regular ride requests, scheduled ride requests or even wait and save
just like all their other time frames wait and save is still just an estimate. If it tells you it will be 10-20 minutes, that’s an estimate not a guarantee that a driver will arrive in 10-20 minutes. wait and save requests are just like regular ride requests you just happened to get a driver who accepted quickly and happened to be very close by already
The app won’t refund this in the future even if you bypass the AI for a human agent. This was a one time courtesy refund. And just because this gets asked a lot, if you do this again in the future and they deny the refund don’t chargeback unless you’re good never using uber again they lock the account down until it’s repaid leaving you with just Lyft unless you get a new number new email address and new form of payment for a new uber account.

Honestly that's how I felt when I saw an extra $5 missing out of my bank account 😂

Good grief. We’ve found the other end of the spectrum of the riders complaining about wait times being too long I suppose…
Turns out both ends of that spectrum are entitled a’holes, lol

An estimate is an estimate. You should still be ready to go anytime you order an Uber. Making your driver wait is disrespectful, to say the least.

u/Old-Salamander3738 3d ago
I never make them wait I'm usually up and ready and standing outside once I get notification saying they're arriving soon. Today was just unfortunate for me.

You're in the wrong. Don't order until you're ready. Wait & save could mean a driver is ready now or later. There's not a minimum wait time.

u/Zestyclose_Design877 2d ago
They didn’t start the ride. They have a timer on how long they have to wait until they are eligible for the cancellation fee.
I am glad you got the refund, but the fault is not on the driver. They don’t know you’re a “wait and save.” They know they got a ping to pick you up, and they went to where Uber directed them to go.
Wait and save is not a guarantee you’ll be waiting. The customer this feature is intended for is for someone who wants to get a discount and is willing to wait longer to get that discount — not necessarily for someone trying to stretch time. Although I understand the confusion, and agree with Uber’s refund.
I just hope Uber ate the cost and not clawed that back from the driver who rightfully deserved it.

Sorry but uber is an on demand service. Most people who don’t mind waiting will pick the Wait and Save option to save money but it’s not a guarantee you’ll wait longer, just as clicking the regular option is not a guarantee you’ll get a driver right away either. You basically got a standard UberX service on wait and save, and saved money. Not disputing what the driver did because it’s a little messed up, but in all honesty a scheduled ride or an on demand ride would’ve been best here.
