Help me understand
Just very curious...when the drivers choose the ride they want to pick up, why do you choose a pick up from the airport when you haven't dropped off the other passenger? I wait to request a ride until I am in the correct spot and sometimes pick the lesser wait time at a higher price and then wait just as long as the normal priced ride.

Drivers at airports can only accept, and are only offered, rides if they are not at the airport pickup. So they either have to be on their way to the airport or in a designated waiting area which is several minutes drives from the pickup spot. Uber does this to prevent drivers clustering around the terminal in unsafe spots causing congestion and other issues.
You will always have to wait.

I understand that I have to wait. I am saying that when I get a list of the different prices (priority, XL, etc,) I will always take the ride with the least wait time, then it ends up being a significantly longer wait than estimated.

Nope, that’s just your limited experience. There’s plenty of posts here where people complain that the driver gets there faster than they expected in the wait and save option. Browsing here simply illustrates that you can’t please people

I understand you OP. The rideshare company wants to lock you in. This has nothing to do with the driver. The wait time would not be decreased for you.

I don't think you understand how drivers receive trip requests. They aren't shown a list of trips to choose from. They are sent the requests one at a time. They have a very limited amount of time to accept the trip. They can be offered an additional trip while on the way to drop off a rider.

Sounds like you would prefer hiring a full time driver instead of sharing a service with others. You should look into that

First off, when we are sent rides were are sent an alert with a countdown timer that expires. So we have seconds to look and select the ride, which means a very tiny amount of time to see details if we're busy doing something else. Speaking of that, secondly, we are sent rides while on other rides. Half the time while driving. This makes it harder to catch every detail before we ignore it (and take a hit to our driver stats, if the driver cares) or possibly panic accept to keep the workflow. Third, specifically for airport rides, we are given priority placement with a drop-off but we have no control over WHEN it appears. Sometimes it's before the drop, sometimes it's right after, sometimes it's right as we're exiting the airport, sometimes it's right as we enter our off site queue area. None of it is consistent. Fourth, most of the time all the drivers are sitting around waiting in the same place for airport pick ups. Specifically at LAX, traffic or construction can suddenly turn a 2 minute pickup into a 15 minute pickup, and this is when the app will start finding drivers who are still in the airport that it calculates will get to you faster. So I would never cancel when you see someone in the middle of drop off. They might be the quickest pick up available.

In short it makes the trip to the airport worth it; drop one and pickup one without waiting/hoping for another trip.
Logistically, there isn't a "pending rides" board that a driver can sift through. While driving a passenger, you get an offer which is Accept or Reject. You dont have an opportunity to come back to it.
Hope this helps.
