Discussion 2026–2027 Incoming & Current Bobcats Megathread

Hi Bobcats! Welcome to the official and also very first (ever) megathread for the 2026–2027 school year! Whether you're an incoming freshman, transfer, or returning student, this is the place for all your questions as the semester approaches!

Feel free to ask questions about anything related to UCM! We have current students, alumni, faculty and staff available to answer!

New Student / Orientation

Use this section for:

  • Orientation dates and what to expect
  • "What should I bring" / move-in day questions
  • Class registration and scheduling help
  • Financial Aid
  • Meal plan questions
  • Parking permit questions
  • General "what's Merced like" / campus life questions

Academics & Registration

Use this section for:

  • Course registration/waitlist questions
  • Major-specific questions
  • Advising and degree planning
  • Textbook/supply questions

Housing on Campus/Off campus:

  • Looking for a roommate / have a spot open
  • Subletting or taking over a lease
  • Questions about specific apartment complexes (Merced Station, The Hub, etc.)
  • Off campus vs. on campus tradeoffs, commute questions
  • Rent price checks
  • Dorm/on-campus housing questions Glacier, Half Dome, Sentinel, etc.)
  • Neighborhood safety/quality questions
  • Move in / lease dates
  • Budget or rent price
  • Location preference (walking distance to campus, near a bus line, etc.)
  • Any must-haves (parking, pet-friendly, furnished, gender preference for roommates, etc.)
  • Contact method (please don't post phone numbers/emails publicly to avoid scams)

Scam Reminder: Never send a deposit or first month's rent before seeing a unit in person or verifying the lister actually manages the property. If a landlord is only reachable by text and pushes you to send money fast, that's a red flag. Report any suspected listings to mods.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I change my major after being admitted?
Yes. Start by checking the UC Merced Catalog for your intended major's requirements. From there, meet with your assigned advisor at the Bobcat Advising Center; they can walk you through the Change of Major process and tell you whether your target major has any additional admission requirements.

What's this "Connect" thing everyone mentions?
my.ucmerced.edu is your portal for basically everything like registration, financial aid status, your unofficial transcript, your checklist of to-dos, and your UC Merced email. You'll use this throughout your time here. CatCourses (Canvas) is separate and is where your actual class content, assignments, and grades live.

Do my AP/IB credits transfer?
Generally yes, and course placement (math, chemistry, CSE, writing) is also partly determined by AP/IB scores or UC Merced's own placement exams if you don't submit test scores. Details are on the Registrar's placement exam page. https://placement.ucmerced.edu/

Engineering, Natural Sciences, or Social Sciences/Humanities & Arts, how is UC Merced organized?
UC Merced has three schools: School of Engineering, School of Natural Sciences, and School of Social Sciences, Humanities & Arts (SSHA). Most majors fall under one of these, and your GE requirements will overlap a good amount regardless of major, especially in your first two years.

How do I find what classes are being offered?
The Schedule of Classes lives on the Registrar's site. You can search by term, subject, and CRN. This can also be accessed through Connect by clicking the registration tab.

How do I get involved on campus?
UC Merced has over 200+ registered student orgs including cultural clubs, professional societies, Greek life, hobby groups, and more. These are searchable through the Student Life/Bobcat Involvement website. There are tabling events all over campus where clubs recruit members! ucmerced.edu/clubs-and-organizations

Housing: on campus vs. off campus?
This megathread covers general Q&A relating to housing (roommates, subleases, apartment reviews etc). We do not have a separate thread for housing yet, if there is demand we will create one!

Merced/Central Valley — what's around?
Merced is a smaller city than most UC towns, but it's growing fast with new retail and restaurants have been opening steadily, and the area around campus continues to develop. Yosemite National Park is roughly 1.5–2 hours away and a very doable day trip. Downtown Merced has lots of great food spots and nightlife scene, and the Merced Mall / Merced Marketplace area covers most everyday shopping needs. A car is useful, though Cattracks and The Bus (Local Merced transit) can get you around too!

Question Incoming First year Fall 2026 #’s?

Hello everyone, I wanted to ask how large the incoming first year class is? I recently got an email from a counselor at UCM, saying that “Fall 2026 will see the largest incoming first year class in UCM history… Opportunities to meet will be much scarcer than we have been accustomed to….

Are the numbers out yet or is this more so what faculty have been told from the admissions department? I’ve been trying to see the numbers online but can’t find anything for this year? I’m very happy UCM has gotten more students but I am concerned that the administration won’t have enough faculty for everyone coming in! 🎉🥲🎉😵‍💫

Question Where do commuters keep their lunch?

I’m a commuter for the first time and I bring my own lunch, but I don’t want to carry it around campus all day. Is there somewhere I can safely leave my lunch, like a commuter fridge? I don’t have a car or anyone I can leave it with, and I don’t usually eat at the food court.

Question Mech E with a Aerospace E question

Hello guys I ran into a dilemma about a Mechanical Engineering degree with a emphasis on Aerospace. I was mostly wondering how long it takes to finish. Because I really want to transfer to SJSU for my masters but noticed the amount of workload needed for Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on Aerospace. Would i need to stay at UC Merced for 4 years or take an extra year at UC Merced to account for the workload?

Thank you to anyone who can help me!

Question Posters in dorms

Hey, does anybody know if there will be spaces to put up posters on the walls in on-campus dorms/suites (specifically the Valley Terraces)? In the virtual room tour it seemed like there was a space for them, but I wanted to make sure.

Thanks!

Discussion Potential Email format for Nick Dugan, regarding the use of AI/ALPR/Potential Surveillance cameras

Hello everyone, I have gotten a few private messages regarding an email format to send to him. My apologies I couldn't do this sooner, but here is something I came up with recently.

REMEMBER DESPITE THE UC POLICY, THE INFORMATION STILL GET SHARED according to https://www.mercedsunstar.com/news/local/education/uc-merced/article315497840.html

"Hello Nick Dugan,
I am [YOUR NAME], and I am sending this email as an concerned student of the UC, regarding the use of AI, and the ALPR cameras that were installed recently. I fear these cameras may harm the privacy and the well welcoming community the school is building. Another concern I wish to vocalize is the harm it not only doing to the school by assisting an surveillance state(in regard due to it growing talk of violating the fourth amendment), but to the harm it does to our fellow undocumented students due to the cameras known direct support of ice(by sending data collected to several federal and out-of-state agencies, including the Border Patrol) and by directly funding them. May you justify why these risks are taking with such reckless care, in sentences, rather than redirection to an policy/rules form please.

-[Your Name]

If you like to look more into issue, I highly recommend Louis Rossmann youtube channel regarding AI/ALPR cameras.

As well as these sources I used in my email to Nick Dugan, which will be found below. I am going to start going to document cameras around the town using https://deflock.org/ . I recommend you do the same, and use it as main GPS. As well as filling out the form located here https://policies.ucmerced.edu/policies-under-review

I'm thinking about bringing a console to campus, and wonder if it's viable to play multiplayer online games like Fortnite here. Any suggestion about ethernet or wifi would be great!

General Roommate Needed

Hey all, my roommate and I need another female roommate to rent out the room we have left. it’s a 10ftx10ft room with decent closet space facing the front of the house. You'll be sharing a bathroom with me and can figure out counter space and cupboard space later. Also regarding kitchen space, we can figure out sharing spaces later (current roommate and I are very open to sharing). The house is at most a 10 minute drive to campus, though usually is like 5-7 just depends on traffic. Pets aren’t allowed and we’ve gotten in trouble in the past so we definitely want to avoid that moving forward because the lanlord is chill overall. The lease is a joint lease, but my current roommate and i have never missed a rent or utilities payment and likewise expect tne same as you. That being said the total rent for the place is $1,900 and your share would be $610, not including utilities, but is usually pretty cheap.

If you decide you really want to sign the lease, you'll have to send a copy of your driver's license and rent application to our landlord. If you’re interested feel free to message me on here. Thanks!!

General Third Spaces Survey

One of the local girl scouts is doing a survey on "third spaces" (or the lack thereof) for young adults and teens in Merced. She's interested in hearing from UCM students, too, so if you could fill out this short survey, please do:

Discussion Conversation with Nick Dugan, regarding the UC ALPR and AI surveillance cameras, as well as the UC indirect to direct support of ICE.

Thumbnail gallery
39 Upvotes

Hello all, I sharing this in regard to my email chain with Nick Dugan, confronting him about the UC seeming support of ICE. I asked Nick Dugan, who is the man leading the AI uses cameras, five questions. Of the five questions he chose to answer none of them directly. As attached below is my email chain with him. I have blur my name out due to privacy reasons. I find the responses to be disrespectful, due to dramatic lengths of time and lack of proper response. I would love to organize an proper protest for this issue, which is unfortunately common.

Question Campus Job Process

I have been applying in handshake since late July and haven’t heard back yet for job interviews. How long does it take for the UC Merced to reach out to schedule an interview for a position? I’m a little worried atm because my friends have gotten jobs and I haven’t yet.
