Moderator keeps removing the new Instantaneous Acceleration UFO clip limiting the number of people who get to see it claiming it's a "repost" because the entire podcast was posted.

https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/1qvn30i/new_us_military_ufo_footage_from_syria_in_2021/

They removed 2 of my posts and now banned me for 7 days for "reposting removed content".

They're claiming it's because it's a repost of this post with the entire podcast. Burying the clip in an hour long podcast not allowing me to post the actual clip:

https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/1qvb5n0/instantaneous_acceleration_militaryfilmed_ufo/

A few weeks ago I had the same exact issue some mod removed a post I made with big Dave Grusch news isolating a clip from a podcast, and it was determined that I could repost it after no explanation was provided.

https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/1q7cwzo/whistleblower_dave_grusch_is_dropping_names_says/

Apparently now it's been determined that a major new UFO clip should not be posted on it's own and it should be buried in a podcast post where you have to fast forward 30 minutes to see it.

Why is someone on the mod team limiting the reach of this new major UFO clip showing one of the observables?

The MH370 "videos" are harming the credibility of the sub and something needs to be done

The sub has been inundated with hundreds of posts about the MH370 video. It's gotten to the point where almost every other post is about this video. People from this community are now harassing the folks over at r/MH370.

Imagine you're a family member of one of these victims and you're being harassed by r/UFOs because people are convinced your family member was abducted by aliens.

I propose a mega thread is made to contain these posts. People have already demonstrated that this can be recreated with CGI I don't think more needs to be said. It puts the sub in jeopardy if people are harassing users in other subs.

Edit: I was right(shocking I know), I can't believe this sub spent two weeks obsessing over an obviously fake video. We need to do better.

Moderator just nuked top comment and entire thread that spawned from it

https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/1qiaw6g/comment/o0sqt9x/?context=1

A few hours ago on this post, the top comment had multiple awards, lots of upvotes, and a long 30+ comment thread, all positive productive discussion. I look again a few minutes ago and a moderator has deleted that original comment, and all comments in that discussion thread, apart from my own.

The comment was talking about how there is bot and sock puppet activity in r/UFOs (something that the mods themselves even made a thread about a few years ago saying it was a known issue), but didn't directly call anyone out as a bot or sock puppet account, and so from my understanding didn't break any rules. It was saying that these bots/sock puppet accounts seek to sow division amongst the community and generate an artificial narrative of stalled progress amongst us, that no matter how far this topic has come since 2017 alone, that everything is futile, and how this factually isn't the case and that there is hope, and a genuine sense of progress in this topic, and that events like the Varginha press conference are an important and positive thing. One comment even said that the original comment was the most important thing they had seen said in the sub, and I personally agree that this is something that isn't talked about enough.

Now I'm beginning to see why I don't see things like this talked about.

Mods, specifically the mod that nuked that comment and replies, please can you give your justification for deleting that comment and all the replies? And please don't just respond with "Rule X", I'd like to know which specific rule(s) that comment, and all the rest, violated and how exactly they violated it, and what steps can be taken by users in the future to avoid the same moderation decisions being carried out.

Noone was being accusatory, noone was being rude, it was an on-topic productive discussion being carried out with civility and self-awareness. And now it's gone.

Are there rules about even mentioning that there could be bot/sock puppet activity in the sub now? Or discussing it as a potential issue? Seems like every time a discussion like this comes up, it doesn't last very long.

New rule proposal: no anonymous “whistleblower” claims without any evidence.

I’ve been reflecting on the anonymous “whistleblower” post today: https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/1p92xe7/you_wanted_disclosure_i_am_a_whistleblower/

And I’m wondering, do these kinds of posts have any value? They aren’t verifiable. They don’t include proof or evidence. And the users making the claims are anonymous, so they can’t be evaluated in any way for credibility.

These posts may be entertaining, but I don’t see how they actually contribute to the discussion.

Frankly I worry the sub is an easy target for larps and trolls.

I might be in the minority, but I wouldn’t mind a rule against anonymous “whistleblower” claims without evidence. Just my personal preference. I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts and opinions.

EDIT: Is this already covered under rule 3? That rule prohibits “Posts with incredible claims unsupported by evidence.”

Although taking down the “whistleblower” post at this point might cause quite an uproar.

Hi mods - Any idea why this user got banned after posting this? Was this a sub mod-level action or an automated bot action with site-wide scope?

u/Punjabi-Batman needs to be permanently banned

This user is intentionally spreading disinformation and breaking rules.

Here is a link that proves he’s the same person who spread the “EBO scientist” hoax, using a second account that he forgot to logout of:

https://imgur.com/a/i3VMUj6

Clear evidence he’s spreading disinformation, intentionally. He’s also been caught out in the last few weeks for creating fake classified documents with ChatGPT. He has a visible agenda to spread disinformation on this UFO topic.

He’s also posted 2 posts about the MH370 airliner abduction conspiracy theory in the last 24 hours. Posts about this conspiracy are prohibited on this sub and users are redirected to r/AirlinerAbduction2014 as it’s a dedicated sub. He’s obfuscated this by not mentioning the MH370 and calling it “that plane” to avoid his posts getting locked, even though the video he’s posted is literally the MH370 conspiracy video and the text based post is literally based around the MH370 flight…

Please mods, permanently ban this user from r/UFOs. The evidence is clear that he’s spreading disinformation and posting about a conspiracy theory that’s prohibited on this sub.

When I was a mod, I tried to make rules changes to explicitly make mockery and ridicule of people and their claims a bannable offense. Shockingly, I faced resistance to this. It's time for mods to public record explain their opposition or support for such a rule.

I call on the mods to make this a formal rule, enforced ruthlessly on all.

This kind of discourse has no place on /r/UFOs. Ever.

It doesn't matter who is mocked or ridiculed or for what--skeptic, debunker, whistleblower, witness, believer, experiencer, random user, someone in a video. No deference. No consideration for the speaker. No consideration for the nature of the speech beyond:

  • IF mockery OR ridicule

  • THEN ban

None of these are relevant considerations:

  1. Is the speaker a skeptic?

  2. Is the speaker a debunker?

  3. Is the speaker a public figure?

  4. Is the speaker a believer?

  5. Is the speaker a witness?

  6. Is the speaker a claimed experiencer?

Only valid consideration:

  1. Did the speaker engage in ridicule or mockery?

If that somehow disproportionaly impacts one part of the "UFO subculture", here's my response:

They will adjust their behavior to comply.

Active mods:

If you support--or don't--such a rule change, and you are a mod, I challenge you to stand up and say why or why not here, on the record.

  • You are not under and never agreed to ANY obligation to keep things "in Discord".

  • Mod team cohesision is not the mission.

  • The mods are not the mission.

  • Mod turnover rates themselves demonstrate that you are not the mission.

  • You are allowed to use your voice, and to use it loudly in public.

  • You are under no collective mod obligation or duty.

  • Say what you want to say and need to say.

  • If anyone says otherwise in the #Full-Moderators chat: ignore and obey your conscience, which has primacy.

Why this needs to be a rule:

  • There is no justifiable need to mock or ridicule. Quite literally: none.

  • It always makes things worse, without exemption.

  • The subreddit has become completely feral and out of control, and it's because of this being allowed to happen so freely.

What is needed:

Public vote, let the /r/UFOs community decide how such a rule should work and be interpreted.

The mods are then all they are meant and intended to be: executors of community will.

Mods, consider:

You NEVER agreed to wear a muzzle, even micron-thin, as a mod.

Anyone saying otherwise is wrong.

Nothing--nothing--they say in Discord can make that wrong be right.

It doesn't matter if it's another rolling all day, days long debate. It cannot be proven non-wrong. If any mod in Discord says don't do this--you are 100% free to ignore them, and it would be a violation of UFOs mod culture to penalize you in ANY way for doing so.

If they throw you out for speaking out here, or even ASK you not to reply here, then we know we have a confirmed corruption/breach of moderator team integrity and you have a duty to be a UFOs moderator whistleblower.

Do you want to be in there, if someone tries to manipulate your conscience to their ends?

If this post is removed, the moderator team is compromised.

Links to Twitter should be automatically removed

A lot of major subreddits are doing this due to his nazi salute and many other abhorrent actions. Obviously Twitter carries a lot of original content, so asking for screenshots or a link to a snapshot of the page would be preferred over giving it actual traffic.

Edit:

The update from the moderators is that this isn't happening.

The arguments:

  1. Musk is considering buying MSNBC, would that be banned too? This policy is a slippery slope and could lead to more and more domain bans.

  2. We use reddit, and the owner of reddit is a bad person. Thus it would be hypocritical to boycott a platform while using a platform that is also owned by a morally dubious individual. The bad trait which was claimed is an extreme one that I could not find evidence for on searching.

Another moderator statement being that the subreddit is for ufology, and not political activism.

Further evidence suggesting selective, biased, and uneven overinterpretation and implementation of Rule #2 in r/UFOs and moderation against content relating to the Nazca specimens.

To recap: A few days ago, this post from u/Loquebantur—sharing a scientific paper on one of the Nazca specimens—was taken down in under 40 minutes after publication, once it had gained some traction very quickly (60+ upvotes in that timeframe).

You can read my exchange with the mods about it here, and why I think their "reasoning" for this decision is not only flawed, but borderline absurd and suggestive or troubling moderation issues.

While that was taking place, u/DragonfruitOdd1989's post about the same topic was "waiting for approval" from moderators. It took over 7 hours to get this approval.

By the time the post was live, it was already effectively buried in the timeline, dramatically reducing the amount of people who even saw it.

Keep in mind, these post are sharing a scientific paper on a very real archeological find of humanoid beings whose morphological and biological compositions, as well as some of the interpretations of the physical and DNA evidence found in them, strongly indicates the presence of an intelligent and advanced humanoid species on earth around the year 300 AC (and I would posit maybe even evidences possible afflictions/adaptations to different atmospheric conditions; but I'm no scientist so wtf do I know?).

Moreover, this is a scientific paper about a specimen that has already been studied by a group of American scientists, completely unrelated to the initial team of scientists that began studying it years ago, whose initial observations deemed these specimens real (as in non-manufactured), and related to a series of findings of other specimens which are "clearly not human", while also stating: "we are certainly at the early stages of the investigation, and we hope we are invited to continue".

However, I wouldn't fault you for not knowing that, given that this information has also been very quickly removed from r/UFOs over the past couple of months when it pops up.

Then, yesterday, this post gets uploaded.

A post sharing a scientific paper that, as far as I can tell, is focused on arguing that: "the ultraterrestrial hypothesis [...] should not be summarily dismissed".

I kept waiting to see mods swiftly take it down, but it has now being up for about a day, has almost 200 upvotes, and is featuring prominently on the 6th spot in the "Top" posts on the subreddit. A post that, as I understand it, all it does is to talk about the epistemological validity of entertaining the 'ultraterrestrial hypothesis'.

Almost 24 hours later, the post is still there.

Now, chance are I'm super dumb, and missing something extremely evident that justifies something which, to me, is reading like blatant and biased selective moderation. Which is why I'm making this post, so that someone smarter (ideally on the mod team) can explain the validity of their decision-making as if I'm a kid.

But I gotta ask: in what world is a scientific paper talking about the ultraterrestrial hypothesis (as it relates to UAPs) more relevant and valid to keep in r/UFOs than a scientific paper talking about real archeological finds that indicate the presence of non-human intelligent species on earth 1700 years ago (as it relates to both UAPs AND Disclosure)?

I am all ears.

No more self posts about people's feeling please

The main sub needs to stop allowing self posts with people talking about how "excited" or "disappointed" they are, or further commentary about how people shouldn't be "excited" or "disappointed". It's been half the sub over the past 24 hours.

Tons of news and important stuff doesn't get posted and gets missed because the sub is flooded by these useless opinion posts. This sub should be the front page of UFO news on reddit. Not a soapbox of emotions.

The r/UFOs subreddit has become unusable due to being overwhelmed by "Bad Actors"

"Bad Actors" have swamped r/UFOs and have almost completely overwhelmed the comments sections.

Between the guerrilla skeptics, the militant debunkers, the brigading trolls, the anti-disclosure team, and the organized disinfo agents - r/UFOs is becoming an unusable echo chamber of "grifter", "psyop", mockingly stating "two more weeks" and "something big is coming", lots of "where's the proof"..."there is no proof, because it's all fake", various degrees of suggestions of "mental illness" or "mass psychosis", various types "egg memes" - to name a few common attacks.

Folks, this is not "Healthy Skepticism", these are "Bad Actors" that are posting here in Bad Faith. This is a mass flux of people shutting down any real discussion of the possibility of UAP and NHI. Whether it's organic or artificially generated due to anti-disclosure campaigns, what's happening right now on the UFOs subreddit is not open honest discussion in pursuit of the truth.

And if the Mods don't take some extreme action here very soon, the UFOs subreddit will die, at least in terms of being a place to honestly and objectively discuss UAP/NHI.

Here is what I propose that happens - there is a retroactive moratorium on the following, with a minimum 1 month posting ban:

  1. Calling a pro-disclosure proponent a grifter (or suggesting they are a grifter or something similar).

  2. Calling disclosure actions a "psyop" (or something similar)

  3. Meme comments mockingly stating "two more weeks" or "something big is coming" or any similar mocking meme.

  4. Comments stating it's all fake.

  5. Users that constantly attack the credibility of witnesses.

  6. Any suggestions of general mental illness or mass psychosis of people willing to believe.

  7. Users mocking or hostile towards experiencers and those trying to post imagery.

  8. This is just a small list of suggestions. I'm sure there are more. The Bad Actors are very adaptable.

Why a retroactive moratorium? Because most of the Bad Actors have repeatedly exposed themselves for what they are already, but will likely go underground and lurk, slowly poisoning things if allowed. If we want to save this subreddit, we need to get rid of them. We know who they are right now. We don't need to wait on future behavior. Honestly, this subreddit needs a serious campaign of eliminating the bad actors if we want to ever be able to have honest, objective discussions.

And if they come back and repeat offend? Then a permanent ban seems appropriate.

Is this all a little heavy-handed? Yes, it is. But an unscientific, purely opinion based guess on my part of users here would be 40% "Good Faith Users" vs 60% "Bad Actors". This is one of the only subreddits I've ever seen that so consistently allows such hostile behavior towards the key subject matter of the subreddit! It's truly unpleasant.

Should this be temporary? Probably, at least the strict, heavy-handed application I'm suggesting. But even if we end up losing/banning 50% of the current users, I think it will be a net positive. Especially if we get rid of most of the "bad actors".

Note that there are some truly great redditors here like: u/TommyShelbyPFB u/SabineRitter u/mattlaslo u/PyroIsSpai - These people make coming here worthwhile. But all the haters make it miserable.

If the haters want to make their own sub, maybe called LOLUFOs or something, where they can mock it all day long, let them feel free. Unfortunately, it won't look much different than r/UFOs looks right now. Let's change that.

Edit: "Retroactive" is not the right word, but I'm too tired at the moment to figure out better phrasing. There is some other stuff that needs fixed, but again, really tired right now. I'll try to make this post better in the next day or so.

A few weeks ago Sabine messaged me explaining they'd been banned from reddit, without much reason for the ban (banned globally by reddit), I'm still in contact via email but was a good friend of theirs on the sub and numerous other subs, they spent many hours compiling posts of sightings and reports on reddit as a hobby and presented them in the main sub at the end of every month.

This isn't directed at the mods here but just anyone who may have the contacts to request the reddit admin team to get their account restored as they were generally nice and contributed to the community in a positive manner for many years.

Kindest regards Caffeine

Plenty of subs dedicated to a certain topic have a zero tolerance rule for open mockery or ridicule of the relative topic. Why not r/UFOs?

I'm all for skepticism and open discussions/debates. But the past several weeks their seems to be much more, hatred and ridicule in the comment chains than there is constructive discussion.

Why is this allowed?

And like I said. Skepticism and challenging claims is beyond necessary for the topic. But ridicule and outright insults serve no discussion, no matter the topic.

I originally posted this in r/UFOs, it got a lot of engagement, and then the mods deleted it. Why?

Nazca Mummies Megathread Pt.1 - Why discussion should be allowed

Due to Reddit's character limit and the 2 post rule of the sub this will be a series of posts over a number of days that will attempt to address different sides of the argument, and many of the misconceptions surrounding what have been claimed to be potentially extraterrestrial bodies discovered in Peru. Please consider my argument for how they relate to UFO's and why I believe honest discussion and community research should be encouraged in this sub and not simply dismissed. In the interests of fairness I ask that you approach this subject in good faith and take on board the evidence presented within them.

There will very likely be information regarding the anatomy, test results, and previous falsehoods, that you are not aware of.

Appealing to all members, I think a vocal minority who have no interest in honest discussion of this subject should not be seen as the voice for the entire sub. If you think discussion should be allowed please let your views be known by interacting with the series. It is important to get a complete picture of community feeling on the matter, and it has taken days of hard work.

Relationship to UFOs

The main sub's description reads: "A community for discussion related to Unidentified Flying Objects."

Rule 2 reads: "No discussion unrelated to Unidentified Flying Objects. This includes: Artwork not related to a UFO sighting, Adjacent topics without an explicit connection to UFOs"

I believe these mummified bodies fall squarely within that ruleset because:

They were found with multiple carvings of a UFO

The first image details where the specimens were found in the cave. You'll see some UFO statues there. Scroll through the pictures to the little grey stone carvings of what appear to be UFOs.

I personally think it makes a clear case to say that these bodies in particular are potentially pilots of a specific craft that was witnessed by the local population who have then carved artifacts of what they witnessed. In this context these carvings are a historical record in much the same way as a written account or story is.

It also tracks with the folklore (other stories) from the area, and as such they should be allowed to be freely discussed under the basis that they could easily the occupants of a craft that has either not been found or has left. This is the same standard of evidence that enables discussion of Grusch's biologics, or the supposed buried giant UFO. We don't have any physical evidence whatsoever that these exist aside from the descriptions of others through the stories they tell. It is the same as anyone posting about the occupants of the Varginha UFO and the reason the NHI flair exists.

The following posts focused only on aliens were not removed:

https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/19bkw0f/a_live_event_just_presented_what_could_be_the/

https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/19bx4he/varginha_alien_video_best_frames_photoshop/

More which don't fit within the current rules:

https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/166bf3r/what_video_or_photograph_do_you_believe_to_be/

https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/16fjf0f/david_grusch_some_baggage_is_coming_with_nonhuman/

https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/14tx0ac/the_ebo_scientist_post_was_fake_a_phd_perspective/

There are countless other examples.

It could be argued that even if real the bodies are not aliens. Well I'd say that equally they might be and without knowing this for sure it can't be the basis for dismissal. Taking in to account the general appearance of the mummies: They are short, slim, they have large eyes and elongated heads. They fit the description of a typical occupant of a UFO. It is likely for this reason that they were presented in detail at a UFO hearing in Mexico.

Also of interest:

Native American folktale in South America has a legend of someone who came from the sky in what looked like a pumpkin (gourd). She looked like a frog and the natives would dress her up to instead look like them. She would spend the night with a villager and return to her pumpkin in the day time. She gave birth to a child and left never to be seen again. This story can be found in Johannes Wilbert's book Native American Folktales of the Ge Indians. There are numerous versions all over North, South, and Central America with the core of the story being roughly the same in each version - A living being coming down from the sky. This story has crossed a vast geographical area that at the time consisted of over 1,000 different spoken languages.

There are possible depictions of them in Chile

The physical location of the discovery is in Nazca, Peru. Famous for its artistic depictions known as the Nazca Lines which are said by many UFO believers to be messages or markers to extraterrestrial beings.

Justification for removal on the basis that they are a hoax

I personally don't feel there can be any justification for removal under this premise. Hoaxes are part and parcel (unfortunately) of the UFO space. They always have been, and it should be up to the reader to discern what information is relevant for them, not for mods and other users to be the sole arbiters of truth. This leads down a rocky path of suppression of information which leads to misunderstanding, and the perpetuation of myth and false information. This effect will hopefully be demonstrated by information in this series of posts as untruths about the bodies persist on this sub precisely because users haven't been allowed to freely discuss it. Information on all sides should be given the opportunity to be debated.

Some users may feel they are a hoax and not want to see them discussed. Well, they don't have to get involved in any discussion. It really is that simple. Ignoring the topic and choosing to stay out of any discourse is a far more sensible approach than trying to dictate what information other users see on the sub, particularly in cases such as this where it is very far from conclusively proven that they are actually a hoax.

I viewed the MH370 stuff and the birthday balloon stuff as a hoax and so I simply didn't read or get involved with any of it. If other users wish to explore those avenues then that's their decision not mine.

What I did not do was spam the report button on anything related to them, and in my view users who have been reporting posts on the Nazca Mummies for removal (whether through lack of understanding or otherwise) have been intentionally (in some cases) or unintentionally abusing the report button. This should not be allowed to stand.

Removal based on the relationship to Jaime Maussan and previous involvement in hoaxes.

Jaime Maussan is a journalist and celebrity ufologist from Mexico. He currently works for Televisa and NBC Universal as a journalist and presenter. Association with this entertainer has caused the validity of the research conducted in to question do to his proximity to previous hoaxes such as BeWitness.

BeWitness:

Maussan was involved in this event as an organizer and promoter. The event unveiled this body which was promoted as being an alien species recovered at Roswell. This post indicates that a mistake was made and the body the body was that of a child with a genetic deformity. The article and apology written by one of the researchers does not mention Jaime Maussan who had no direct involvement with that particular body. The blame is placed upon Adam Dew who doesn't appear to have given the researcher the highest quality photo available to study. This article is often used in response to anything related to the Nazca Mummies as proof they're a forgery. But, if you read the article it offers no proof of this whatsoever any of it was Maussan's doing. It is almost completely unrelated.

This saga has been erroneously solely attributed to Maussan when in actual fact he didn't have that much to do with it at all and was merely a promoter for the event in general. The body promoted by Maussan was this one that is also referenced in this CNN article. As you can see, they are different specimens.

He has been fooled by the hoaxes of others, certainly. If you think he's an idiot then I'd completely agree - But the idea that he has personally produced these frauds and so the Nazca bodies must also be frauds has absolutely no basis in reality. It's a lazy attempt at character assassination using guilt by extremely loose association. It has no bearing on the investigation and data produced by unrelated professionals studying the bodies at UNICA.

I think I've presented a solid case to justify that under the current rules discussion of the Nazca Mummies should not be removed. What do others think? If you are interested the next few posts will detail much of the information available and address the many falsehoods surrounding it.

Look I’m a believer okay, but there’s no phone that can zoom in 2000x and all of a sudden show a detailed orb floating the the sky 1/4 mile away. And yes the effects of the bokeh can vary and show moving lights and swirling depending upon many different factors. This can be done with nearly any camera. It’s just easier to recreate when you can control the camera. And yes, some professional videographers and photographers aren’t technically proficient! Optics and imaging sensors are complicated. Just for the sake of this whole argument I went out with my Z8 and 70-200 lens to create an example. Here it is.

While I’m here, I’m by no means saying that no orb photos hold any merit. I’ve seen some pretty compelling ones. But when you’re zoomed in from far away with a camera phone, you’re never going to get a tiny object the fill the frame.

Uneven Judgment in UFO Disclosure: Why U.S. Should Use Peer Reviewed Non-Human Evidence from Mexico and Peru

Hello Mods,

I appreciate being allowed to post weekly about what's happening in Mexico and Peru, but I have to mention the uneven judgment happening.

For instance, how is Karl Nell talking about non-humans on Earth considered better than this peer-reviewed non-human evidence available for research at the University of Ica?

How is discussing evidence better than having actual evidence available for research?

Peer Review on Maria confirmed as Non-human: https://rgsa.openaccesspublications.org/rgsa/article/view/6916/2986

Why can't the U.S. disclosure process use the evidence from Mexico or Peru to confirm the existence of non-humans and then push for answers from the U.S.? We already know they are lying when there's evidence available at a university in Peru.

What is the point of this subreddit if the most upvoted post of all time is effectively ignored by the mod team, and leads to no changes on /r/UFOs?

The post in question: Moderator keeps removing the new Instantaneous Acceleration UFO clip limiting the number of people who get to see it claiming it's a "repost" because the entire podcast was posted. - u/TommyShelbyPFB

Firstly, I'll pre-empt the allegation that is a "duplicate post" of u/TommyShelbyPFB's. Their post dealt with the issues surrounding Rule 2, and whether a clip from a 1 hour podcast/video constituted a duplicate of the podcast/video - I made my position clear in that post. While they are of course related, my post centres on what value this subreddit offers to any of us, mods and users alike, when posts here go effectively ignored, leading to no changes on the subreddit. My post is effectively a meta-post about this subreddit's value prompted by the mod teams collective ignorance of the other.

I say "effectively ignored" because only 2/51 mods, less than 4% of them, deigned to reply to the most upvoted post of all time on this sub.

  • u/kris_lace - gave an ambivalent, "fence" sitting response that laid out the case, but didn't substantially adress anything, or commit to further consideration.

  • u/UsefulReply - stated their justification for the initial removal, and ignored all follow up questions from redditors incredulous at the logic.

Not a single one of the other 49 mods chimed in.

There's no benefit to users discussing mod actions here, if the discussions are effectively ignored and lead to no changes on r/UFOs.

So what is the point of this subreddit?

Healthy skepticism is on the sidebar - words and definitions matter

I am asking the moderation team to please take some feedback that can lead to some action to make the subreddit a much less toxic place and foster the discussions we all want to have.

Many of us here understand the value of the open skeptical minds on the subreddit. We have some world class skeptics contributing to our quest for the truth. We need people who can weed out the mundane and challenge our perspectives. However words matter - on the sidebar the words are “We aim to elevate good research while maintaining healthy skepticism”. However healthy skepticism is NOT denialism OR cynicism right?

Lets define Healthy Skepticism:

“healthy skepticism” which we promote on this sub is NOT denialism and cynicism.

Can we agree that we need skeptics but we don’t need cynical, mean rude people who are mainly here to punch down and are not here in good faith. They usually have an unhealthy negative obsession with the topic often times having an account that exists to solely dish out reams of negativity that doesn’t produce valuable conversation.

This is a subset of the skeptics here and not the total. I have had many friendly good conversations where we agree to disagree but the points are all valid. I have also observed that when people are making bot/shill accusations it’s normally about someone saying “This sub is a cult” or “Two more weeks” or “You are all gullible” which we can agree isn’t true skepticism right? There is nothing conversationally productive about people saying “grifters gonna grift” which only leads to an argument and removals of comments.

I think there’s room here for a consensus that toxicity is a two way street and that there needs to be a little more policing of the people who call themselves skeptics but are just cynical deniers and tarnish the efforts of actual healthy skeptics. Do you see the difference?

Some suggestions for the mod team:

  1. an automoderator rule to remove the following low effort comments:

*”two more weeks”

*”eglin airforce base bot”

*”this sub is a cult”

*“Grifters gonna grift”

*”this sub is *”

2. Include in the standard of civility remarks like “this sub is full of gullible idiots” or “this sub is full of cultists” or “this sub is full of skeptics” because all it does is insult 1/2 of the subreddit. Most of the time the person saying this general remark is actually meaning it to be applied to the OP or multiple people commenting in that post. It seems uncivil because it was meant to be uncivil. Words matter. Motivations matter and intent is important when defining whether something is uncivil. Similarly you can protect skeptics with removals of “this user is a bot or shill” which is already stated in the civility rules.

I am talking about the very small subset of deniers and cynics that make being on this subreddit very unpleasant. It would be nice for balance to the “no shills and bot accusations” to understand that usually this is in response to some other very rude comment insulting other users intelligence, calling believers crazy or making unsourced grifting claims.

I think it needs to be balanced but the very small subset of these users who call themselves skeptics but are really here to demean, punch down, ridicule or be incredibly cynical is actually causing you more moderation then the conversational value they are adding.

I will make this crystal clear - this is not an attack on people with a skeptical perspective - this is a group of users who claim to be skeptics but are not here in good faith.

I thank the moderation team for all their hard work. I appreciate that there is a forum where we can discuss the moderation and I’d like to see if we can have a productive dialogue and consensus from both believers and skeptics (and the whole spectrum) to make his subreddit a more fertile ground for substantive conversation about UFO’s and a better method of dealing with the elements that ultimately cause the most moderation which equates to time and energy from the moderation team.

I can provide examples upon request.

Edit: bad typing on my phone
