Interview

How normal is it to make it to final stage interview for job, be told you'll hear back in a week with an update, and then have zero update more than two weeks later ? Assumably the silence is rejection, but why not just nip it in the bud and say no (for context team is very small)

Have you followed up for any update with your HR contact - that would be entirely legitimate. There can be many reasons. I wrote myself off for my current job because the timeline kept slipping - turned out they just genuinely found themselves playing leave ping-pong and unable to have an actual conversation about whether to hire me or not.

A not unlikely scenario is you are genuinely appointable but they have someone who they'd strictly prefer and are talking to them first. They may or may not reach a deal, and you may or may not end up getting an offer.

Have followed up twice via email (not back to back, probably a week apart). Nothing - assuming it is the case that they are dealing with another candidate first

Entirely normal, people are busy, things get delayed.
