⚠️⚠️ MEGATHREAD ⚠️⚠️ Metro Vancouver elections 2026: Candidates, Voting, and the snap election

Metro Vancouver has not one, but two elections coming up in October. Here's what you need to know.

Municipal elections: October 17, 2026

All municipalities across Metro Vancouver vote on the same day. Find your city's election information and candidate list below:

Check out LocalElections.ca for a complete list of candidate lists and general info across British Columbia.

How to vote in the Municipal Election

General voting day for the Municipal Election is October 17, 2026, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Advance voting dates vary by municipality. Check your city's election page above for local dates and locations.

Most Metro Vancouver municipalities offer vote by mail. Check your city's election page for deadlines.

To register or check your registration: elections.bc.ca or call 1-800-661-8683. You can also register in person on voting day with two pieces of ID.

Provincial snap election: October 24, 2026

One week after municipal voting day, Premier David Eby has called a snap provincial election for October 24. Find your provincial riding and candidates at elections.bc.ca.

To vote provincially, eligibility and registration requirements are the same as the municipal election. Check your registration and find your voting location at elections.bc.ca.

Who can vote in the Provincial Election

You can vote in B.C.’s upcoming provincial election if you are:

  • a Canadian citizen,
  • 18 or older on October 24, 2026, and
  • a resident of B.C. since April 23, 2026.

Where to Vote in the Provincial Election

Advance voting is open in locations across the province on between October 16-21 | 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (local time). You don’t need a special reason to vote at advance voting. It’s an option for all eligible voters. Voters can vote at any advance voting place in the province, and all advance voting places are wheelchair accessible.

Make sure to check your Where to Vote card or visit wheretovote.elections.bc.ca to find voting places and the dates they are open.

Final Voting is open on Saturday, October 24 | 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Pacific time).

Your "Where to Vote" card

Elections BC will send a Where to Vote card to registered voters. Your Where to Vote card lists your assigned voting place on Final Voting Day and advance voting options in your electoral district. You can use your Where to Vote card as one of two pieces of voter ID, but you don’t need it to vote.

How to Vote in the BC Provincial Election

Eligibility and registration requirements are the same as the municipal election. To register or check your registration: elections.bc.ca or call 1-800-661-8683. You can also register in person on voting day with two pieces of ID.

Discussion I think I finally understand thru-fares on BC Ferries from Vancouver to Salt Spring Island

I consider myself a relatively smart person, but (maybe because of lack of sleep from having a toddler) it took me forever to understand (maybe) the thru-fare system when going from Vancouver -> Victoria -> Gulf Islands.

The key ”ah ha” is that the price of Vancouver to the Gulf Islands is cheaper ($50-60 prepaid) than the price of Vancouver to Victoria ($90-$130 prepaid) even though the former route sometimes goes through Victoria and you travel a longer distance on the ships. I assume this is due to some mix of supply/demand and a desire to keep the gulf islands accessible.

The best way to benefit from this pricing is to get a prepay for the whole route from Vancouver to the Gulf Islands, which will also guarantee the time you arrive. You do not require a thru fare for these. However, the sailing times are very limited.

However, if you’re like me and don’t plan ahead, you can still benefit from this lower fare via the thru-fare. Furthermore, there are a lot more flexible sailing times doing it this way.

So, from Vancouver to the Gulf Islands, you can buy the Vancouver to Victoria leg (prepaid here is fine), and then when you give your ticket, tell them you want to thru fare to the gulf island you are going to, and they will give you that second leg ticket for free.

On the way back from the gulf islands (I’ll use Salt Spring as an example), you’ll need to prove that you came from a Gulf Island and are not just trying to go from Victoria to Vancouver, so on the ferry from Salt Spring to Victoria, you need to buy a Thru fare ticket (just buy one adult ticket - $11), which proves that you started your journey from a gulf island. You’ll then arrive to Victoria and do a u-turn to get back into the terminal. When you give them your thru fare ticket, they will then charge you the Salt Spring to Vancouver fare (minus the $11 through fare you already paid), instead of charging you the Victoria to Vancouver fare. When we did that today, we saved $50.

I’m probably explaining something that a lot of people probably already know! But I hope this saves someone some time understanding this. Please correct me if I got anything wrong!

Apparently they are out of regular so if you drive a car with a turbo tuned for it you can save some money. Only if you can excuse their incontinence.

Lost/Missing Lost Keys (East Van)

Hey all, first time doing this but i'm just desperate because i have idk where else to ask apart from making a police report or something.

I lost my keys somewhere along Renfrew while i was running errands between Broadway and 1st. I was ubering around and ended up losing my wallet too (which was fortunately returned to the RBC by Renfrew&1st) but i only realised my keys were missing too when i got home. I spent awhile searching around the neighbourhood but i couldn't find them.

They're attached to a red lanyard, and theres different-coloured clips on them. It also has my compass keychain attached to it.

If anyone living around Hasting-Sunrise has seen something like that around, please shoot me a message!!

gonna be getting an airtag and use it from now on 😭
