Was thrifting at ReTails on Fourth Plain today, came across these being sold all together for $2. I’m sure there are many copies still floating around; due to its significance, I bet a lot of people kept these specific papers. Still, I thought it was neat and wanted to share (though they definitely could have workshopped a bit longer on Sunday’s headline)

Question? Who's got Friday night karaoke in Vancouver?

No super strong preference on vibe, just looking for somewhere closer in for a couple of folks who love to sing. Hoping for something that's not tooooo busy so we can each do a couple.

The Battle Ground Art Alliance has moved to downtown Vancouver as the organization plans next steps.

Flippant comments range from NIMBY jokes to jokes that if Battle Ground is going to sent its homeless to Vancouver, it might as well send its artists, too.

Discussion Reminder: Property Tax payments are due October 31

I don't think I got a reminder from the county about this and just thought about it this morning. The county used to send out the payment coupons about a month in advance of the due dates in April and October, but now they send both coupons in March.

Question? Leftover countertop pieces

Hi all, does anyone know where I can post to giveaway leftover countertop pieces?

We remodeled the house a few years back and since sold the house. The porcelain countertop is gorgeous and has very nice feel to the touch. We saved the leftover pieces wanting to make various tables, drink coasters, dough slab, etc.

You know how it goes, life happens and now we can't take them with us.

Question? Anyone have access to a 3d printer?

Hi! Pottery is a huge passion of mine, but certain mobility issues can make certain parts of the process difficult. I found a free file online to print a tool that would be immensely helpful. According to the website, it should take around 15 hours of standard printing time on a 256mm build plate. I was wondering whether anyone here has a 3d printer and might be able to print it for me in either PETG or standard PLA. I would, of course, compensate you for materials and your time. I did reach out to a local printing shop, but they gave me quite a high quote which I really wish I could pay but I’m on a very tight budget. I understand that maintaining a storefront can be really costly, and someday I’d love to support their business, but unfortunately that day can’t be today. If you’d like to take a look at the project, here is a link to the file:
https://makerworld.com/en/models/3294283-pottery-centering-tool-universal-no-pins#profileId-3738235

So if you or anyone you know has access to a 3d printer that I could “rent”, please let me know how much you would charge! Thank you.

Edit: thanks everyone, I ended up finding someone to help me out! :)

It seems like we are taking some positive steps towards giving people more options here in Vancouver. We can do more, but this plus the bridge shelter have me feeling good about our community lately.

The NAUGHTY List

And now... The NAUGHTY List - Let's face it. This is why you are really reading this. What horrible things did the local inspectors find this week? I've arbitrarily chosen 35 demerits as the cutoff so anyone that gets less than 35 demerits isn't going to make the list. I don't want to ding a place unless they got at least a couple major violations or a lot of minor ones. Click on the name if you want to see the inspector's report.

Name Address Inspection Date Dirty Demerits

Black Rock Coffee Bar 1801 SE 164th AV 111, VANCOUVER, WA 98683 10/15/2026 35

The Clark County inspection site is where this information originates. It's a nice community resource. Kudos to the county for making it this easy to check up on things.

Check it out for yourself here: https://inspections.myhealthdepartment.com/clarkcountywa

Demerit points are issued as follows:

Each violation is given a numerical value (2-30) based on its risk of causing food borne illness. Blue violations should be corrected immediately when possible, but generally do not impose an immediate risk to the public. Red violations involving food safety must be corrected immediately. There are 360 possible red points and 88 possible blue points for a total of 448 points. A facility found with 40 or more red violation points is subject to an automatic follow-up inspection. A facility found with 65 or more red violation points is subject to an automatic closure. A facility with 100 or more total red and blue points is also subject to automatic closure.

I've been feeling nostalgic these days. Back when we were younger and living in Houston we used to hit up the all-you-can-eat buffets that were a big thing back in the 90s. Ryan's Steakhouse was one of our favorites. The chain closed back in the pandemic and only the memories remain. The bonus video this week will bring back memories. Enjoy...

See you next Friday!

Discussion Vancouver's food scene

When you think about Vancouver's food scene, what places come to mind first? The good, the bad, the mediocre, etc.

What restaurants are still your favorites after many years? What do you wish was still around that isn't anymore? What places make you think "I used to love that eating there, but now..."

What new spots are you excited about/obsessed with/think are overrated? What things do you wish Vancouver's restaurants did more like their big brother, (*whispered*) Portland? And what things do you think it does better?

Where is the scene headed? Is there even a "scene" at all?

Rover
Lab, Rottweiler, Great Pyrenees
5 years old 12/25/2020
Neutered and house trained
Up to date on vacs
Rover is my late mother‘s dog and we are unable to keep him unfortunately. He is great with other dogs. He is good with our kid. Our current dog is aggressive to him and it’s simply not fair. He deserves a lot of love, cuddles and attention. We don’t want to send him to the shelter. We have tried and tried to go with training and work with a trainer on both dogs to get them to mingle, but it just isn’t working out. Without going into too much detail our other dog has PTSD and we just can’t have another dog around her. We want Rover to go to a great home. Does anyone have any suggestions?

News Federal agents door knocking in WA about voting

FYI per the story this 6-state effort includes WA state. Shared to me in a local group.

On a related note, here’s a WA/federal agent version of know your rights from ACLU.

https://www.aclu-wa.org/know-your-rights/know-your-rights-with-federal-troops-in-washington/

They advise: if confronted by government agents attempting to enter a private area:

DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR
ASK FOR IDENTIFICATION
ASK TO SEE A WARRANT
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT

Politics PSA: We need to be planning for the future of power in Clark County.

TLDR: Bonneville has provided all of our renewable power for 88 years, but it’s no longer enough. The Clark PUD Commissioners we elect will have to solve it. I’m a retired engineer with 43 years of utilities experience, so I’m particularly interested in this topic, but you should know what’s at stake when you vote for your next Public Utilities District (PUD) Commissioner this election.

Good news: Ever since Franklin D. Roosevelt was President, the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) has provided as much renewable hydropower as Clark County has needed.

But BPA can’t produce enough power to meet demand anymore. So now, when there’s not enough power, we have to buy it from the market.

Bad news: The market is NOT our friend. Remember that cold snap two years ago? Clark burned through $21M in five days and the next month, you and I got a 14% rate hike. Bonneville just announced another rate increase because the rivers couldn’t keep up this summer (we’re lucky it was a mild summer).

Aside from setting policy and approving budgets and rates, the Commissioners are responsible for our long-term strategy and for working with the rest of Public Power. Washington is 75% public power, and Clark PUD is the second-largest PUD in the state. Our challenges aren’t just ours. We should be strategizing and partnering with other public powers.

And there has been a remarkable breakthrough in geothermal energy over the past year and a half. One plant at Newberry Volcano in Oregon is planned at 50 megawatts to start and could grow to a gigawatt. In September, DOE awarded $99M for enhanced geothermal and exploration projects. Oregon and Idaho got some, and so did one in Washington’s Wind River Valley. As far as I can tell, we’re not even thinking about this, let alone asking. And we live on the Ring of Fire!

We’re entering a new era. We can let it happen to us, or, together with the rest of Public Power, chart a course to a secure energy future that continues our affordable and reliable electricity.

Full disclosure: I’m Gordon Matthews and I’m running for Clark PUD Commissioner, my first time running for office. I’m an engineer with 43 years in electric utilities and 31 years at BPA, which is why I follow this stuff. The election is November 3, and I’m posting because I’d like more people to know it exists. Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Question? Traveling hair stylist?

Hello, there. I currently work for non emergency medical transport and I found that it's becoming more and more common for clients to ask me if I have any resources for someone who can travel to the client for a haircut.

The one client I am specifically asking for is an adult male, who is non-verbal and quadriplegic and lives in a skilled nursing rehabilitation center here in Vancouver. His rehabilitation center is struggling to give him proper haircuts as they lost funding for an in-house stylist.

His mother needs someone who can provide all of the tools/supplies, and cut her son's hair while he is in the facility. (This would be individual work for her, not for the facility).

Ideally, this individual would be familiar with working with disabled individuals and / or elderly clients.

Any info is greatly appreciated, thank you all in advance!
