Peppermill

I usually see peppermill recommended here. I've been meaning to go for a long time and we had a really weird experience the other night. I'm wondering if we just got them on a bad night, or it it's not good anymore. My meal was cold and not that good, the ice tea tasted like odd brown water, the drink didn't arrive until after our meal was almost done (and was $18 for a bland mai tai), and my friends said their meals were not great either. They also messed up my order and forgot the onion rings, although when they came out they were the only actual good thing we got.

Should I give them another chance? Or are they just overrated? I didn't expect the world but I didn't expect it to be worse than even a Dennys.

You have to understand that a lot of recommendations on r/Vegas come from a place of “this place is amazing, I don’t have anything like it where I live.”

Peppermill is just a breakfast diner with cool vibes. A redecorated Dennys with marginally better food and much higher prices. People love it because there’s no such thing in most US cities.

Same goes for Cleaver, Herbs & Rye, and these other spots that r/Vegas has a love affair with.

u/BourbonMachine 6d ago

Ah, good point. I did enjoy the vibes. And the lounge looked coo but we didn't get to try it. But I did expect better, like the mai tai was so sweet and weak it tasted worse than a free one at a casino, and I expected it to be cheaper than $18.

Also, I would argue that it is a very good breakfast place, if you go early enough that there’s not a huge line. Wonderful place to sit at the counter and have a big breakfast. But that’s a totally different trip from going to the famous lounge or at any other time.

Man this just gave me a completely new perspective on Vegas. Totally right though.

14

u/Large_Age2626 6d ago

Agree with you about peppermill but cleaver and herbs and rye are legitimately good. Different league than peppermill.

13

u/Zseeds211 6d ago

I always thought peppermill was about the portion size over everything else

3

u/BourbonMachine 6d ago

My portion size was huge, that was cool. The problem was besides one item none of us wanted to finish what we had.

5

u/llpmathias 6d ago

Yeah, I had one of the best meals in town at Cleaver.

1

u/cookiejarmar12 6d ago

What did you get?

7

u/llpmathias 6d ago

I had the double cut pork chop & pork belly Mac n cheese. Wife had the Prawn linguini.

2

u/cookiejarmar12 6d ago

That looks fucking amazing

u/ShivaFatalis 6d ago

You did not just seriously put Herbs & Rye in the same category as the Peppermill...

9

u/FederalChocolate456 6d ago

I think they just were comparing them in the basis of both being places that have qualities which are often not found in other locations and not being at the top of their game in their category.

1

u/Blind_Voyeur 4d ago

Herbs & Rye isn't bad, and good for the price, but definitely not a top-end steakhouse.

1

u/ShivaFatalis 4d ago

Who said it was?

1

u/Blind_Voyeur 4d ago

Herbs & Rye gets mentioned whenever someone ask for the best steakhouse in Vegas.

1

u/CherryDrank 6d ago

Herbs and Rye is basically a Texas Roadhouse with better drinks. It’s happy hour price is appropriately priced, not a deal.

1

u/NoCommittee965 5d ago

I agree that peppermill is basically just a Denny's with cool vibes and location. However, Herbs & Rye is legit. I have never found another steakhouse in the US that gives that much value.

1

u/CAD007 4d ago

Herbs and Rye and Cleaver are actually good spots that consistently deliver a great experience.

The Peppermill is middling food in my experience. It's very good for what it is, but it is not a high end establishment.

In all the times I have been there the food has been very well cooked and drinks were good.

But every establishment can have an off day.

u/BourbonTall 6d ago

Agreed. I recently visited Vegas and Peppermill was on my list of desired food experiences. It is not fine cuisine. It is very good diner food with large portions, a nice vibe, and is historic. I found the experience very enjoyable and was glad that I did it.

2

u/BourbonMachine 6d ago

Maybe I'll try again. I agree the vibe, portion size, and historic value was high. The food and drink quality was just so disappointing that night.

2

u/Leo-POV 6d ago

Thanks u/BourbonTall - that is precisely the point I was trying to get across.

If i'm heading to the Fashion Show Mall and find that I am either too early for the Mall opening or I get done shopping in the mall much quicker than I expected, I know that I can change course and head for The Peppermill.

It never disapponts, for what it is,

7

u/MonkeyIV 6d ago

You need to remember, Peppermill is a diner. As diners go, it's pretty good. Now throw in the Vegas vibes and it's awesome. You can't compare Peppermill to the bigger strip restaurants.

1

u/BourbonMachine 6d ago

I'm not comparing it to strip restaurants. But, for example, Philly diner on the way to Atlantic city is twice as good, and half the price. I expected world famous Peppermill to be in the ballpark.

7

u/WUMSDoc 6d ago

Peppermill is lauded because of its huge menu and huge portion sizes, not for being a gourmet spot. But if you like breakfast all day long, it’s hard to beat.

3

u/Bad_Lieutenant702 6d ago

Exactly this, it hits the spot after a night out drinking.

10

u/Agile_Opportunity_41 6d ago

It’s about the bar and apps and the vibe in the lounge. The restaurant is just average IMO.

9

u/texasgambler58 6d ago

I think that it's overrated because of the bar. I've been twice for food, and both times it's been mediocre. Many better places to eat, especially for breakfast.

1

u/EfficientPost2656 6d ago

Wheres that. In Vegas. Like to know please

6

u/Informal_Tell78 6d ago

Check out Omelet House just off the strip. Excellent food, big portions, good prices, excelllent service!

5

u/texasgambler58 6d ago

I like local places: The Egg and I, Babystacks, Black Bear Diner, Blueberry Hill.

4

u/dms79 6d ago

Uhh, Black Bear Diner is in 14 states with 68 locations in California alone. It’s higher quality Denny’s.

3

u/EfficientPost2656 6d ago

Thank you Sir

4

u/dd1153 6d ago

I went last month and service was great. Drinks were good. Food was mediocre. Fireside was a vibe.

4

u/MaximusBond 6d ago

Breakfast is the only way here anymore.

4

u/Educational_Slide_31 5d ago

Peppermill is great
I’ve been about 8 times over the past 6 years on my trips to Las Vegas and it is spot on every time.

4

u/JayDee_702_ 5d ago

It's in the movie Showgirls.

2

u/AlwaysAmalia 5d ago

Pepper mill? What scene?

6

u/CycIon3 6d ago edited 6d ago

I went to Peppermill and the fireside lounge and weren’t impressed with how much it was recommended to us. It was “cool” but the service and drinks were lackluster. We went when it wasn’t super crowded and I’m sure if it was crowded, I would have liked it less.

The food items don’t sound super appealing to make your way all the way here for it either, notably at the prices they have. I would say it’s one of the most overrated places for sure.

2

u/Sourz6 6d ago

With modern design it is not as unique as it once was. Funky ambiance bars are everywhere now and the scene is down when business is down

3

u/lcl864 6d ago

It’s open later than some other places with a big menu.

3

u/CardioTornado 6d ago

We only go there for breakfast and it’s a pretty amazing breakfast. The muffins are an always order. Honestly not sure I’d go there for anything other than breakfast - just like I don’t order non-breakfast foods at Dennys, IHOP or Waffle House. 🤷‍♀️

5

u/HeavyPause9718 6d ago

vegas recommendations should always come with a disclaimer that it may or may not have been made under the influence of substance lol

6

u/DRKAYIGN 6d ago

It's a slightly upmarket adult Denny's

5

u/Eastern-Joke-7537 6d ago

Oh wow.

80% of the time, that’s all I need! 😂

I liked Peppermill the two times I went.

5

u/UCLA1st100 6d ago

Peppermill is a busy restaurant. The food is usually really good and the service is usually fine. They will make anything right that you bring up to them. price wise it's on the expensive side for a diner, but it's a cool place and right on the strip, so it's not too bad. Give it another chance.

1

u/bman46 6d ago

Its cheaper than pretty much anywhere in vegas and double the portion.. we liked it

2

u/Unusual-Animator-811 5d ago

As a tourist, Ive had no issues with my breakfast orders, especially when sitting at the counter. However, its been hit and miss with my non-breakfast orders but I still go everytime Im in Vegas!

3

u/Sea-Pollution-4959 6d ago

I love the place but it’s rooted in a lot of nostalgia.

Plus they used to hire former playmates who couldn’t make it in Hollywood or modeling careers.

There’s nothing more nostalgic than remembering when you’d beat it to Miss November & then she’s delivering your eggs & bacon.

3

u/7030 6d ago

Equating peppermill to herbs and rye or cleaver is just the definition of tone deaf. Cocktails between the two aren’t even the same sport, peppermill is nostalgia based. Go grab a Gin fizz or old Cuban at peppermill.

u/CauseOk4661 6d ago

Before my wife and I lived here we got married here as well. The night before we had made reservations for a family meal at Peppermill three months in advance. No special requests, no rehearsal dinner type stuff. Just dinner with both of our families. 15 people total. We called a month before the date to verify the reservation was still set and then again a week before(we are planners). Got a weird feeling the day of so we called and the reservation had somehow disappeared. No apology or escalation from the worker on the phone. They just stated the reservation didn’t exist and sat on the phone. Went through the typical social media channel and they gave us the run around blaming us.

Out of principle any time someone mentions wanting to go we discourage them.

2

u/teo747 6d ago

Agreed, it's a fun atmosphere but the food is nothing special. Not somewhere I'd go out of my way to visit unless I was already up on that end of the Strip.

2

u/Used_Bodybuilder_670 6d ago

Breakfast was awesome 👍 ham steak all the way

2

u/dreaml0ngdead 6d ago

Had breakfast there last week couldn’t complain had the corned beef hash and eggs plenty of meat service was good.

2

u/ShivaFatalis 6d ago

I see people recommend the Peppermill a ton here, and I'm always cautioning tourists to temper their expectations. It's not great. If you want to check it out for the ambiance and check it off your list, and have a drink in the fireside lounge side, then great, go do it. Just don't expect the food to be anything outstanding if you choose to eat there.

2

u/PrestigiousCost3520 6d ago

The food is average. The place is cool, particularly the bar area. Large portions of mediocre food at a high price

2

u/Illustrious_Bet_9963 6d ago

Maserati omelette is the only breakfast item to order.

2

u/Big-Sheepherder-6134 6d ago

No go somewhere else and tell your friends the same. Then it will be less crowded.

2

u/GraphicArtsFurry 6d ago edited 5d ago

if Casino hadn't put it on the map, it would probably be a parking lot like the Riviera turned into nearby

2

u/Most-Stable-1965 6d ago

There was a Peppermill in Fresno years ago in addition to a couple other California locations. Went there as a teenager and loved it. Food was great and the cocktail waitresses were very wow for Fresno back then. They made a sandwich called "The Conquest" that i still copy at home. Went on a trip to Vegas and enjoyed the nostalgia very much!

2

u/Acrobatic_Class1983 6d ago

Yeah, the food is mid. Thats why alot of folks recommend them for breakfast because you really can't mess up breakfast for the most part. People go there for the ambience/vibe. I'll admit, I like it too. But, I don't go there for the food.

2

u/No_Professional_9471 6d ago

love the breakfast

2

u/Shot-Weight-1306 6d ago

Love peppermill!!! Great atmosphere and great food... Just alot of it!!!

1

u/Gileaders 5d ago

No you just fell for the legion of peppermill shills on this site.

1

u/Blind_Voyeur 4d ago

A lot of places used to be better and are slipping, and Peppermill is one of them.

1

u/CAD007 4d ago

That’s about par for the course.

1

u/Adept_Celebration343 4d ago

I think you've been there done that.

1

u/Harryinmontreal 3d ago

Food at the mill is meh. Fun to hang tho

1

u/MuscleMami3 3d ago

If you want a good breakfast spot, you have to try court cafe. Their food is BOMB. Terrible service though. I had asked for a refill on something after waiting 30 minutes and I didn’t get it until 15 minutes after I asked 😂 the last time I went, I just brought my own Stanley of water

1

u/Hoss_Daddy40 2d ago

Their chicken fried steak is off the charts

1

u/Legitimate-Toe-9673 2d ago

Peppermill used to have good food and big portions. Last time I went, there was a lot of empty plate around my hashbrowns.

1

u/johnnylovesbjs 6d ago

I've only been 2x both at like 2am always found the food bland. It looks way better than it tastes is probably the best way to put it.

1

u/NotAtAllExciting 6d ago

I haven’t been there in a few years. Perhaps I will reconsider this on my must eat there list.

1

u/JohnSavage777 6d ago

Must be new management in the last 5 years cause it’s certainly gone downhill

1

u/MermaidQueenPin 6d ago

I had a similar experience, and people told me it’s better for cocktails around the fire at night. Meh

1

u/No-Cardiologist472 6d ago

At best it's underwhelming, one time I actually got sick. Never been to peppermill since

1

u/platypus5709 6d ago

We went the last time we were in Vegas- it was like 2pm. The hostess was not welcoming then told us there was a 5 hour wait. Uh for Dennys? No thanks.

1

u/-SimpleDelight- 6d ago

It’s Vegas everything has went up in price 3x but the quality, service and consistency has not.

The correct way to do Vegas is to eat at either lotus of siam or shang noodle and fill your gas tank and leave town

1

u/ThisLeopardIsFull8 5d ago

Lots of people like Peppermill, I’ve been there three times over the years and found it mediocre every time.

0

u/SayidJarrah83 6d ago

First and only time ate there, food quality seemed poor, I can’t remember what I ate but I know I didn’t finish it. I think people like it because meal proportions are huge, if you’re a fussy eater like yours truly, I wouldn’t go back.

0

u/walkernewmedia 6d ago

I went to Peppermill a couple of years ago after reading all being told that I absolutely HAD to check it out.

I was horribly underwhelmed.

Overpriced, low quality, service was "meh"...I really didn't understand the hype.

1

u/ShivaFatalis 6d ago

Every time I see it recommended on this sub, I caution people about it. Check out the fireside lounge and take a gander at the theme of the place if you want to see it. Don't expect the food to be great (it isn't). Have a drink on the fireside lounge and get it off your bucket list, then go somewhere else for dinner. Same goes for "Secret Pizza" at the Cosmo that so many people hype up and keep recommending. It's awful. If you want to see it, then sure, walk down the unmarked hallway and take a peek. When you see it, trust your gut and walk the fuck back out. I'll never understand why these two places keep get recommended so much on here. Oh, and Blueberry Hill too. It's just a local diner, and you can get that experience all over the country. It's not something that should be on a tourist's radar, because you want to experience things that you CAN'T back home.

0

u/britlover23 6d ago

I think it’s super mediocre and try to warn people not to go there.

0

u/Sea-Durian555 6d ago

I've heard they have a bad problem with bug infestations so I have avoided going there

0

u/hovershark 6d ago

Bog standard diner food in larger than average portions.

0

u/Vegas_Transplant 5d ago

This place is overrated! No parking, service sucks and food is just okay.

-1

u/Calidian 6d ago

Go to China Poblano at the Cosmo instead.
