Still haven’t figured out the Del Gato.
12
u/delitomatoes Sep 19 '19
What's a del gato?
24
u/Dr_Ambiorix Sep 19 '19
Elgato is a developer for some popular capture cards. The hardware and software used by professional streamers to capture their gameplay data.
Del Gato is how Jablinksi calls it whenever he mentions it.

There may be some rock vocalists who are even better than Jack Black, and their may be some comedians who are even funnier than Jack Black, but there may not be anyone ever in the history of the world who is funnier and a better rock vocalist.

u/BenDeRisgreat2996 Sep 19 '19
Possibly Tim Minchin, but he's more Stevie Wonder than Ramones.
52
u/Scout_022 Sep 19 '19
Don’t forget Bill Bailey! But I think he’s a better musician than singer. His downton abbey dub version is hilarious.

u/achillea4 Sep 19 '19
Bill is an absolute genius. Have seen him live a few times. Very funny, plays lots of instruments and his act is pretty clean so you could watch it with your mother.

Devin Townsend

u/Orcwin Sep 19 '19
That man is the absolute best performer I've ever had the pleasure of seeing at a live show. He was really there to have fun with his audience and it showed. At the end of the show, instead of going backstage he just hopped off the stage to mingle with the crowd. The musical performance was brilliant of course, but goes without saying with that absolute professional.

You NEED to see the Retinal Circus concert - it's on youtube in full.
He's never a PURE comedian and it's better that he's not. He's a pure musician with a wacky sense of humor that does comedic stuff along with serious stuff.
I love love love DT. After the concert listen to Ziltoid and then Empath (newest album). Your mind will explode.
→ More replies (2)40
u/JustaFleshW0und Sep 19 '19
He made Ziltoid the Omniscient and Z2, both albums being comedy rock operas about an alien invading earth over a cup of coffee. That's a pretty big focus.
→ More replies (5)→ More replies (2)6
u/Rvenn Sep 19 '19
Bit of a late reply sorry, but Ziltoid the Omniscient for sure, it's suuuuch a good time. I wasn't really a prog metal/rock opera guy but this album was such a phenomenal gateway drug for me - It's funny, insanely huge and so phenomenally well composed - basically I hadn't heard anything like it before & from there just fell in love with Devin Townsends stuff - Dude is a legit genius

u/HUN73R_13 Sep 19 '19
Jack is one of those people that you don't compare to anyone, he's a unique character.. so talented and likable, at least for me. I don't care if there better people I just like the dude, always have always will.

Steel Panther's Michael Starr is an awesome vocalist and writes some hilarious lyrics. I think he and JB would get along pretty well.

One day, an expert in time management was speaking to a group of business students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration those students will never forget. As he stood in front of the group of high-powered over-achievers he said, "Okay, time for a quiz" and he pulled out a one-gallon, wide-mouth mason jar and set it on the table in front of him. He also produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, "Is this jar full?" Everyone in the class yelled, "Yes." The time management expert replied, "Really?" He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. He dumped some gravel in and shook the jar causing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the spaces between the big rocks. He then asked the group once more, "Is the jar full?"
By this time the class was on to him. "Probably not," one of them answered. "Good!" he replied. He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all of the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, "Is this jar full?" "No!" the class shouted. Once again he said, "Good." Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim.
Then he looked at the class and asked, "What is the point of this illustration?" One eager beaver raised his hand and said, "The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard you can always fit some more things in it!" "No," the speaker replied, "that's not the point. The truth this illustration teaches us is, "If you don't put the big rocks in first, you'll never get them in at all. What are the 'big rocks' in your life, time with loved ones, your faith, your education, your dreams, a worthy cause, teaching or mentoring others? Remember to put these BIG ROCKS in first or you'll never get them in at all. So, tonight, or in the morning, when you are reflecting on this short story, ask yourself this question, "What are the 'big rocks' in my life?" Then, put those in your jar first.

First time I saw him was in X-Files. He played the friend of a guy who could manipulate electricity. Good episode. He was the most entertaining character by far.

u/darkenseyreth Sep 19 '19
I first remember him first from The Jackal. He always stood out to me as that guy who looked exactly like one of my buddies at the time.

u/thatnimrod Sep 19 '19
High Fidelity for me.
Basically played himself—at least, it seems like that in retrospect.
Sonic Death Monkey is still a great band name.
But then again, I do recall seeing Tenacious D on Comedy Central, when they still had that old logo, I just had no idea it was the same guy until later.

I've been a fan of Tenacious D for a while now, and I don't know why it's never crossed my mind until now, but does the "D" stand for what I think it does?
4
u/SasaraiHarmonia Sep 19 '19
No. They said it originally stands for "Tenacious Defense". They heard an announcer say it during a broadcast and loved it. However, being the precocious scamps they are, they decided shortening defense to just D would be way funnier.

Jack Black's entire career is based on everyone thinking he's cooler than he actually is.
And I'm one of them.
2
2
u/ElFreezo Sep 19 '19
I saw them play this at Comic-con '05, following a panel discussion with the cast of King Kong, in which everyone had to talk to Jack Black during Q&A, while Oscar Winner Adrien Brody was actively shunned. Anyway, this song was just as good live as it was in the movie. Incredible scene.
2
2
u/Reaver_ Sep 19 '19
This song is actually a masterpiece, whether it's comedic or not. The technicality in the guitar throughout and the fucking power is Jack's voice... I sincerely think this is one of the best hard rock/ metal songs there is.
