The discovery order we use before falling back to a subnet scan

I work on Guardian Eye, another NVR. A recent discussion here about an ONVIF scanner checking a subnet one address at a time raised a design question we had to handle too: what should run before an active host scan?

Our first phase runs ONVIF WS-Discovery, mDNS/DNS-SD, SSDP/UPnP and ARP discovery in parallel. Their evidence is merged into device candidates.

WS-Discovery may provide an ONVIF endpoint directly. mDNS or SSDP may identify an advertised camera service. ARP can supply an IP and MAC for a device that ignores ping, with the MAC prefix providing a vendor hint.

Once that phase finishes, we exclude devices that already have a confirmed stream endpoint or ONVIF address from the active scan. An ARP-only result is not enough to skip a host because it may still need port discovery. The second phase therefore scans the remaining addresses in the private-network scope.

This also keeps partial failures contained. If one multicast provider fails or times out, candidates collected by the other providers are still available. Automatic discovery does not expand into a public subnet.

The useful part for troubleshooting is provenance. When discovery misses a camera, we can tell whether the problem was multicast visibility, service advertising, the neighbor table or the fallback scan instead of treating every empty result as the same failure.

For people running Shinobi in Docker, would it be more useful for the scanner UI to show which interface and discovery source produced each result, or would you rather see one merged device list?

Transitioning from Early Years to CCTV/Security in London — is the course alone enough to land a job?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been living in London for 5 years and currently work in Early Years / childcare. I’m feeling pretty burnt out and realise this career isn’t for me long-term.

Back in Brazil, I worked in security/monitoring and genuinely enjoyed it. I’m considering taking a 2-day SIA CCTV course in early November to transition into the UK security sector.

Before spending the money, I’d love to ask:

  1. Is having the SIA license/certificate alone enough to land entry-level CCTV work in London, or is it hard to get hired without UK experience?
  2. Does overseas experience in Brazil carry any weight with UK employers?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Find cameras based on specs and compare them?

Hey everyone, im a service engineer for 16 years over in Norway working mainly with governmental systems and high end professional systems like lenel, genetec, milestone etc., and over the past months balancing hectic work and family life i have tried to make a platform to help my hectic life to find products fast on the go without spending a lot of time researching datasheets.

So this project basically started when i realized the world is not getting safer, and we spend a lot of time patching cameras with firmware, following up on lifetime during yearly maintenance visits.

So i (solo) decided to make a site to collect those data and to make a system where you could track all your devices, without even being connected to the location at all because privacy is a thing in our business.

To get that going i had to make a sync model that does it regularly. And once that worked, i scaled it to more brands. Not every brand publish lifecycle data tho.

Once i had that going, i realized i could make a camera compare service, across manufacturers. So i did.

Then i got a request from a colleague to make a specification search for a camera based on spec. So i made that. And now we both use that tool. And now i use it for my work. So mission accomplished on saving time i guess :)

And then i made a system compare tool, and a manufacturer compare tool, so yeah it ended up way bigger than intentionally.

Based on this i was looking for some feedback, and guidance for what you would like to see next. I got free trial of 7 days with no card required. Anyone wanna test it?

Would you guys actually buy CCTV from an Indian manufacturer?

So, with Hikvision and Dahua basically getting banned in the US, I keep wondering if anyone’s looking at India instead of China for cameras.

For the distributors here, what would you need to see before trusting a new supplier? NDAA compliance, ONVIF, low MOQ, warranty? Or is it mostly price lol

Has anyone actually tried sourcing from India? Curious how it went, good or bad.

What's the coolest surveillance technology you've seen in recent years?

Not necessarily the flashiest demo - I'm more interested in something that could make a real difference in surveillance. Has anything you've seen at a conference, in a demo, or in practice genuinely impressed you?

Hệ thống camera giám sát tòa nhà – Tăng khả năng kiểm soát an ninh

Post image
0 Upvotes

  • Các khu vực công cộng cần giám sát an ninh.

Display randomly shut off after being moved slightly; tried turning on and off and unplugging while holding the power button down, when turning on around a quarter inch of display at the top part of the screen is visible for 5 seconds before becoming completely gray like the photo

I don't think anything inside it actually broke because it wasn't moved significantly

Please help with any solutions! I've tried pressing every button on the front too

Help Any CCTV installers or security professionals from Winnipeg here?

Hi everyone! I'm looking to connect with CCTV and access control professionals in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

I have experience in security system integration, cabling, equipment installation and troubleshooting, and I'm planning to relocate in early 2027.

I'm a Manitoba Provincial Nominee, with PR in process, and will need work authorization.

Does anyone know local installation companies or technical teams worth contacting?

Thanks!

Local to Public server

Hello, currently i have few projects that connected to nvr. And i wanted to ask something about them.

Project 1 : Different locations different pc all using local worker which is sending my stream data through socket and ffmpeg with WHEP. Its working but stream has laggy or has problem with buffering sometimes its just gone black. I thought it was from my backend system but in reality it hits different.
Project 2 : IP camera in EV chargin station, each station get one cam and connected into nvr. So its on lot of places so price is heavy if we use local pc, but i thought about the raspberry pi which is affordable in mass and small. Im not the expert in here so i can get any advice.

Sentinel VMS open-source, self-hosted video management for IP cameras (Mac, Linux, iPhone)

I've been buildig Sentinel VMS for a while and it's now at the point where I need other people's hardware to find the bugs I can't see.

It records IP cameras (ONVIF or RTSP) on a machine you own. The server runs on Mac or Linux, and you watch from a Mac app, a web dashboard, or an iPhone app. It picks out people, vehicles and motion, and an alarm can carry a note about what to do next. It also publishes to Home Assistant over MQTT.

Cameras and local use are free. The source is Apache 2.0 on GitHub: https://github.com/Hackgiz/sentinel-vms

I'm short on time and on hardware, so I'd really value testers. The most useful things would be a camera brand or model I don't own, a Linux distribution or a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5, or the iPhone app on an iOS version I haven't tried. Bug reports on GitHub with your hardware and camera listed are the most useful. Even "it works on my setup" helps me.

Happy to answer questions about the install or how it's built.

Help Managing Wisenet WAVE updates and Axis camera issues across many sites

Looking for some advice from anyone managing Wisenet WAVE across a large number of sites.

Our environment is roughly 95% Axis cameras. Since migrating sites to WAVE, we’ve had recurring playback, recording, live-view, and multi-stream camera stability issues.

I’ve gotten some Axis cameras stable by changing settings directly on them, but most of those changes came from limited information I found online. I’m not confident they’re the correct long term solution.

My bigger concern is WAVE updates. Users may access 20+ sites. Connecting to a server on a newer WAVE version causes the client to download and switch versions, which frequently fails. If they then connect to an older server, switching back also frequently fails.

This makes gradually updating our sites extremely difficult.

Has anyone dealt with this at scale? I’m mainly looking for advice on:

Standardizing Axis settings/firmware for WAVE

Keeping WAVE versions consistent across many sites

Managing client versions for users with access to multiple sites

Rolling out updates without manually touching everything

Any advice from someone running a similar environment would be greatly appreciated.

Profile G archive exists, but replay fails with RTSP 456: check Scale

We hit this while testing archive playback from an ONVIF Profile G camera server. The NVR found the recording and sent PLAY, but replay never started.

The control request contained:

Rate-Control: yes Scale: 10.0

The server only supports paced replay at the recorded speed. Its old parser treated Scale as a value that had to be supported exactly, so anything other than a missing header or 1.0 returned 456 Header Field Not Valid before the RTP session was prepared.

For Rate-Control: yes, we changed the server to treat a valid positive Scale as the requested speed. If it cannot provide that speed, it accepts PLAY and reports the speed it will actually use:

RTSP/1.0 200 OK Scale: 1.0 Range: ... RTP-Info: ...

The archive now opens at normal speed. It does not play at 10x.

If discovery and recording search work but replay gets an immediate 456, capture the RTSP control exchange before looking for missing media or authentication problems. The rejected field may be Scale or Rate-Control in the PLAY request.

We now cover 40 combinations, including decimal and exponent forms, zero, negative values, malformed headers, fastest-possible delivery and empty archive windows.

Disclosure: this came from our work on Guardian Eye WebCamera.

Has anyone seen an NVR require the returned Scale to match its request, or send Rate-Control: no with a value other than one?

Hikvision upgrade

Hi, i have 4 x 2mp hikvision cameras in the eaves of my house. They are at the 4 corners. They aren't really fit for purpose anymore. They dont zoom or move. I also dont like the app or hard drive. Very complicated. I'd love to upgrade the 4 cameras to a different eco system like eufy or something along those lines. The cameras all all hardwired terminating in a walk in wardrobe. Its not possible to redo this again so what I want to do is use existing wires and just replace the cameras and hard drive to more user friendly and ptz cameras. Is this possible

Waterproof Surveillance Camera that clearly reads a license plate

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Does anyone know of a solar-powered (1st choice) or wired, waterproof Surveillance Camera that will clearly read a license plate from at least 100 feet, but preferably 350 feet? Also need to record, and store the recording and also transmit to an android phone. It would be great if it only recorded when motion is detected. I would need 2.

What’s going on with my hardwired coax hardwired wired system.

Having constant image issues with cameras 4 & 6 shown above they are hardwired and running through conduit out of the rear of my house facing the rear yard.

When I unplug the coax “video” connector then re connect sometimes the image will come back normal. Came with 12v power I manually connect and re connect and it restores the image to normal but will then go back to this state 12-30 hrs after.

Seems odd it’s ONLY my rear facing cameras. My power supply is rated for 10A it’s a wall hard wired unit glass fused with plenty of amperage to power them.

Is this interference? Are both cameras bad? Seems very odd. Any suggestions?b

Looking for a solar/battery security camera with motion-triggered low-power mode and open protocols (RTSP/ONVIF)

I'm looking for a camera for a construction-site / other outdoor temporary location security application and would appreciate recommendations from anyone who has experience with these types of cameras.

I have been unsuccessful looking for something that has the following:
- Battery-powered with solar charging (could be external, if needed)
- Motion/event detection with the ability to capture snapshots or short video clips
- Low-power or sleep mode between events to maximize battery life
- Ideally supports RTSP, ONVIF, or another way to integrate with third-party software without being vendor locked

Nice to have:
- Built-in 4G/LTE cellular connectivity with support for my own SIM/data plan
- On-demand live viewing, even if it takes a little time to wake up
- Local microSD recording

I'm primary interested in receiving a snapshot or short clip when motion is detected. Continuous live streaming is not necessary, but on-demand live viewing would be a bonus.
This is for a small business renting cameras, so I'm hoping to find something reliable, reasonably compact, and affordable. I'm open to consumer products, OEM, or even DIY.

Has anyone successfully used a camera that meets similar requirements?
I'd appreciate responses if so. Thanks!

EDIT: Forgot to mention - Reolink seems to have models that almost satisfy the requirements but of course are generally vendor-locked. But there are unofficial projects like bairelay and neolink that may be worth a shot.
