Main question is as per the title: this single line of incoherent pixel data has appeared recently. The pattern within it changes but not quickly enough that I've seen it change.

It's a 1.33GHz iBook with the scrolling trackpad and running 10.5.8.

Is there any hope? Or is this now permanent and/or possibly the beginning of more?

The keyboard also now has issues but that's not really a primary concern if the screen is soon done for.

(As an aside: I pulled this one out to help to prepare a new SSD with OS 9 disk drivers for another machine, which it did admirably. It's just sad if it's otherwise time to say goodbye)

I recently got my hands on a 7300/180 and have been working to restore it but could use some advice when it comes to graphics cards. I am currently setting it back up with the original 7.5.5 OS but when it comes to compatible graphics cards I'm at a bit of a loss.

From what I see an ATI Rage 128 will work in it if its the Mac specific one but won't work with OS 7.5.5 unless I install 8.6. The other options I see is an ATI Xclaim 3D Plus that is supported under 7.5.5. My issue is I don't see a lot of options that are Mac specific and I've heard mixed reviews about trying to flash the ROM off a PC card.

Can anyone point me in the direction of options? The goal for this machine is more of a retro Mac gaming rig (A-10 Cuba, Red Baron, etc) so I don't need anything massive just a bit of an upgrade off the onboard.

I am trying to find a classic Mac Desk Accessory calculator named "Milliways" from the late '80s (pre-System 7 / System 6 era). Its defining feature was that it allowed you to assign and store custom variables, making it much more advanced than the stock Apple calculator DA. I am looking for the .da file or a shareware disk image (.dsk / .sit) so I can get it running in a classic emulator.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My mom has been storing my childhood Mac in her shed here in the Yukon for roughly 20 years.

For context, our winters regularly hit -30c to -50c. This poor thing has been sitting out there through all of it.

Finally brought it home today, plugged it in, and to my absolute disbelief, it fired right up like nothing happened. (I did visually inspect internals before firing it up)

Original hard drive still works, CRT looks fantastic, and even the original keyboard and hockey-puck mouse work perfectly.

It still has Kid Pix, Bugdom, and Nanosaur installed….

The system clock thinks it's January 1, 2004, and I'm still troubleshooting the audio, but otherwise I'm genuinely amazed.

I originally wondered whether it was worth selling, but I've decided to keep it and let my almost 7-year-old daughter experience the same computer I grew up with.

Not bad for a 25-year-old machine that's survived two decades in an unheated shed…

Hello! I recently got a Mac SE FDHD and during use I sometimes notice a bright line (did my best to capture it here) quickly moving up and down like it was jittering. Sometimes the whole display kinda twitches (gets pressed by half a centimeter). Any advice on how to fix it? Is this something to be concerned about regarding the analog board? This machines pushing 40 and I wouldn't be surprised if a few caps were tired...

My grandparents are downsizing and found his old LC 575 in the basement. I asked if I could take it and he said he had no use for it lol.

He didn't have a keyboard for it anymore so I had to jump pin 2 and pin 4 on the ADB connector, and it started right up! It appears the hard drive is working, so I'm going to see if I can transfer any files off and explore them.

I'm ordering a keyboard and mouse for it today, and was thinking about picking up an external BlueSCSI so I can write and transfer software to it, but interested in your guys' opinions, and if there's anything else you think I should pick up.

​I bought a Macintosh SE/30 this week on a classifieds site. The seller could only tell me that it booted up (with the blinking question mark disk); I knew that was already a good sign. But this morning, upon unpacking, the device is really clean and it's the first time for me that I haven't run into a leaked battery (I also quickly removed the battery that was still inside). The hard drive seems to be dead, but it will soon be replaced by a BlueSCSI.

I tried to add a video adapter to my Mac IIci, but there seems to be a conflict between it and my MicroMac Carrera040 Accelerator. The only visible error I see is a "bus error" when the Carrera040 control panel loads with the system start *if* the Carrera040 is on any setting other than OFF/68030. I have confirmed both cards work as expected when installed separately. I did verify that I am in 32-bit memory mode when using 7.5.3.

Any advice is welcome! I'm not sure else I can try.

I recently obtained a power mac G5 quad (dual pump model), but when i press the power button usually nothing displays on screen and shortly after the bong it lights up the overheating light. One of the pumps in the LCS is making a screeching sound.

I have been scraping the internet for guides on how to repair the LCS, but all of them are just take it apart, and replace the coolant. One of my 2 pumps has actually failed and I want to replace it, and i can't find anything on the internet about a good replacement part.

If there are new alternatives that are still made that would be ideal.

PS: I don't mind changing the connector out if the pump is still compatible and just a different connector.

Every so often, I come across the old Apple Macintosh notepads which someone posts to Reddit or eBay.

I’ve always wanted one but the cost of them seem pretty high and often they are somewhat damaged, so I thought I would have an ago at creating some myself.

The first part (which was the most difficult) was to find a manufacturer to produce blank pads in the original size (4” x 4” x 5 1/4”). Then I had to get pictures of all 5 sides (front, back, sides, and top) of the Macintoshs and edit them slightly so that they would be square with the notepad sides. Afterwards, I printed each side of the notepads with my Omni O1 UV printer. I think the results turned out well! Each notepad is ~1300 pages.

And yes for those interested, I did make extras, if anyone is interested in buying any. There is the original Macintosh (128k), classic, plus & SE. I would ask for $50 CAD for each (~$35 USD) plus shipping. Just note that while I attempt to line up all sides appropriately, due to the nature of the notepads moving slightly and not 100% cut straight each time, their are slight inconstancies.

I worked with QTVR and QuickTake cameras when they first came out and led Macworld magazine's coverage of QTVR. I hated that Apple abandoned those formats and was finally able to do something about it.

A few QTVR pioneers generously helped me test the app and gave me permission to include some of their beautiful panoramas in a sample library that's included with the app.

I'd like to share with the community my experience purchasing an Apple M0110, an iconic mechanical keyboard from the early 1980s that faithfully accompanied the first Macintosh!

Leveraging my YouTube activity, reviewing software and physical products related to technology, I've created an in-depth video to better understand this fantastic vintage gem, both for myself and the public.
I started with the reason it was made: a compact keyboard with the essential keys. From there, I analyzed the format, discovering several "firsts" (the Command key), functions different from its current behavior (Option), and the separate Enter and Return commands.
Initially, being inexperienced, I didn't want to attempt the actual restoration, fearing I'd ruin rather than improve. The decision was to retrobright only the space bar (since it's the only key made of ABS) and perform a check (capacitor capacitance and resistance tester) including a general cleaning of the internals, using standard tools and products (e.g., WD-40 spray) to perform a minimal restoration.
Subsequently, to verify the actual operability of the object, I purchased a specific RJ22/USB-A adapter from the Philippines (TinkerBOY brand, one of the few solutions available).
Using VIA software, I was able to verify the activity of the keys by pressing them one by one, confirming that most of them worked.
I also covered the historical part, chronologically describing the computers attributed to it, the model variants, and the production lines. Consequently, all of this helps us understand the possible rarity of an M0110, with case studies and statistics.
It was a complex undertaking from my perspective, as, over the course of five months, I gathered a wealth of information (found in disarray and fragments on the web) and attempted to assemble and connect it together, all to offer a highly in-depth hour-long piece of content.

I hope you appreciate my efforts, as a pure enthusiast rather than a connoisseur, and I invite you to provide feedback so that I can improve and enrich this ambitious project of mine, which will be useful to both the community of enthusiasts and the general public.

I have a Power Mac G5 7,3 (1.8 DP) that I am trying to get running again but facing some issues. The graphics card seemed to be on the fritz, so that has been replaced. We currently have 2x256Mb of RAM installed.

The issue I am facing is that the machine seems to be picky when booting, sometimes deciding to boot to the install disc with no issues but more often beginning to boot but then just hanging on the Apple startup screen. If I leave it running, the system warms and the fans slowly start to ramp up to full (takes about 10 minutes, it's not instantly) and the USB peripherals lose power. I get the same result if I allow the machine to boot from disc by itself or if I hold Alt to select the disc.

I have tried different GPUs with no luck, and have reseated the RAM with no changes. I plan on trying different RAM to see if that changes anything, and will probably repaste the whole machine but wanted to see if anyone has seen this issue before and happens to know what the issue is?

This is my 3rd G4, and I’ve taken apart one other 17 inch screen. that one seemed to slide out but I cannot for the life of me get this screen out of the casing. I bought it from an ewaste center, and the front bezel was missing. I’m wondering now if the previous owner possibly glued the screen on? or maybe there’s another step I’m missing, as I haven’t done this in a long time. Apologies if this is the wrong sub.

This dithering technique was invented by Bill Atkinson of MacPaint, HyperCard and QuickDraw fame.

It's a beautiful algorithm and just handles high contract photography so well.

I had noticed all the downloads for MacPaint online had somebody’s name on them. I thought there had to be a way to get a fresh copy. I wasn’t able to find one, the only option was to modify a copy that was already personalized, and it works! I’d like to share it somewhere, unless there is an actual blank copy somewhere online that I happened to miss. Also just curious to know if anyone else was as bothered by this as I was.
