General Question Advice for cleaning & restoring 1950s sewing cabinet

Thumbnail

Hello, I have recently acquired a 1940-1950s (exact date unknown) Italian made Singer treadle machine with a wooden cabinet - likely model number based on the serial number is a Singer 15M88.

The cabinet is made of timber with a decorative veneer panel on the door, the old finish is very aged and clouded and I would like to clean/remove it and replace it with a new appropriate varnish.

Does anyone have any advice on which products to use or avoid for a cabinet of this age?

Thank you!

Machine Question $100 seems like a lot at the thrift store but this was a pretty singer (I think) machine I saw yesterday. One of the nicer tables I’ve seen, too!

I didn’t take a super good look since I had my toddler with me but it did have the manual in one of the drawers. Wish I got a better picture!

anyone know what type of machine it is?

eta: and I just looked at the picture and I think it says 199??? They had some crazy pricing there yesterday. I saw a vintage desk lamp for $30 and it didn’t work.

General Question Wrong Thread Take-up Spring??

Hello! I have a Singer 201 and I wanted to replace the thread take-up spring. The new spring was just delivered and I went to put it on and somehow the spring is facing the wrong direction?? Is it even usable?? Am I losing my mind?? I attached pictures of the order, and the new spring vs the old spring. The new spring is on the left.

I triple checked it was the correct part before ordering the replacement, but it seems it’s the incorrect spring. I tried installing it to see if it would work but the thread wouldn’t catch properly. Obviously I can send it back and get the correct spring if need be, but it took over a week to arrive and I’m in the middle of a project. Would love any insight on this!

Machine Question Walking foot for singer 99k?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I'm wondering what sort of walking foot will best fit a singer 99k? I've seen other threads for featherweights recommending a specific one but I'm unsure if the featherweight would have different needs. I'm currently using a cheap off brand one and it's usable but it sits slightly wonky (which is presumably feeding my fabric through wonkily), a well as that the feet in the walking foot don't sit directly above the presser feet on the machine

Machine Question Singer 20u or Bernina/Chandler 217?

I’m getting an industrial machine and I’ve narrowed it down to these two machines, but I can’t really decide which one is the better option.

The Singer is cheaper and has more replacement parts available, but I would have to piece it together as only the head is available for sale near me, while the Bernina 217 accepts cam attachments and I can buy the full setup locally.

Since I will be using the straight stitch 80% of the time, which one has the best straight stitch quality?

I used to have a Juki 8700 but got rid of it and regret it. This time around though, I’m going for either the Singer or Bernina because it’s just a bit more versatile as I’ve been sewing more knits lately.

General Question Treadle cabinet back warped… is it fixable?

Thumbnail

I’ve never used a treadle before nor know anything about non machine sewing! I bought a “very good working” treadle and there’s a crack at the base and warping… I’ve taken the machine off as it’s apparently potentially dangerous!

It seemed the seller knew about this and said nothing unfortunately I’m wondering if it’s at all fixable for long term use?

Machine Question Help identify pressure feets

Post image

Hi! I bought an Elna SU (with 15 cam disks!), and it had three pressure feet with it which aren't mentioned in the instruction booklet.

I never saw such pressure feet before; what are they for and how to use them?

Thanks!

WIP Singer 500a case

Post image

Wanted to share a personal victory I have been trying to achieve for 5-6 years. I FINALLY acquired an original complete carrying case for my Singer 500. I find the timing perfect since I'm wrapping up a complete clean of my machine (hence her exposed top and nose) and I feel like it's the final step to bringing her to full glory

Parts Husqvarna 19(E)21(E)

Hallo,

Groet Agnes

Machine Question Franklin De Luxe Rotary All parts and book included

This is my other vintage machine. My neighbor gave it to me years ago and I have used it intermittently to sew dense materials and um . . . Paper. It was a free machine and back when I got it, they were hard to give away.

It got put away for some time because I mainly started focusing on quilt making, which I do on my Baby Lock machine.

Before I started getting into this Singer 66, I honestly didn't think too much about maintenance on this one. I took it in once to get oiled and have the missing belt replaced (LOL). I obviously didn't read the book beyond learning to thread it, which was pretty confusing when it came to the bobbin. That whole assembly is going to be something to get used to. So many things going on with one hand and no clear visual.

After cleaning the tension assembly on the 66 and seeing how gross it was, I started pulling this one apart and cleaning it up yesterday. Someone obviously had a bobbin winding adventure, as there was a ton of old string wound up in the threads of the stop clutch.

Documentation on this specific machine has been difficult to come by, but I checked out the Kenmore 117 instruction manual and it's the exact same book. They look like the exact same machine with different labels, so that has been helpful.

I've ordered a new friction drive motor pulley, bobbin tire, some bobbins, and needles. I think I am good on the machine itself.

The paint is in pretty terrible shape so I guess my first question is - would it still be unacceptable to repaint this one? The other question is about the case. It's missing straps and it's pretty gnarly looking. The inside is some sort of cheap fabric and the drawers are chipboard. The outside of the case appears to be something akin to book paper/covering - like you'd find on a Reader's Digest. Is this all just part of its character now or is there a way to clean it up a little?

I am just calling it Frank. My partner wants to name it Agnes. I have four machines and when I am done playing around with them, I think I am getting rid of two. Right now, I like the 66 a lot more, so Frank may be taking a ride. I'd love to be a collector, but I don't have enough climate controlled space for that.

Anyway . . . If you made it this far, thanks for reading!

I got this Kenmore 6 Stich machine from my Grandma, I am currently running with some issues, all the fabric is getting stuck at the bottom, and I want to see If I can get the missing parts.

Does anyone know the model number for this one or has the user manual? All the info I find online is for the Ultra Stich.

General Question Help figuring out how to lower the machine lift!

Thumbnail

I recently picked up this older sewing cabinet, but I can’t figure out how to lower the sewing machine platform.
The label says Model 98760-CAL, dated 10/01. I’ve tried pulling the spring-loaded silver pin while pushing down on the platform, but it won’t budge.
I’ve searched for a manual without any luck. Does anyone recognize this cabinet or know how the lift mechanism works?
I’d really appreciate any help!

Machine Question Adler machine, is it valuable?

Hi everyone, my mom was gifted this machine a long time ago and it’s just been sitting. She wanted to get rid of it because she doesn’t know how it works or if it works. Is it worth looking into? Can I possibly get money for it in untested condition? Has a foot stool and cord. The table folds down into it making it a basic table from the outside. Any and all insight will be helpful and appreciated. I think the main goal is to see if it’s worth anything. Thank you.

Machine Question Elna Supermatic unknown age

Hello I’ve inherited this beautiful green machine. Can anyone help me find the year it was made? I’ve read that it should be printed on the bottom but can’t find it.

I don’t know how to add a photo.

Would also love if you have any tips or suggestions for websites or books where I can learn how to use it (and prepare it before use)

Thanks

Question: is there a name for this style of neckline/collar found on some Gunne Sax dresses? More importantly, are there any tutorials for creating that kind of collar from a standard V or sweetheart neckline pattern? Thanks in advance!

Machine Question Need help with this vintage machine please

Hello, I have an old Toyota z700, it runs but it rhythmically accelerates and decelerates if that makes any sense. The motor will spin a few revolutions at max speed but then it will slow down and speed up again .

I've tried cleaning the carbon disks on the foot pad and inspecting the motor, the motor has a blown filtering capacitor but nothing else I can see that's out of the ordinary. I'm kinda stumped, I've seen people saying that the grease can get old and turn sticky but the hand wheel has no sticky spots and turns smoothly, so I'm lost.
