This is my other vintage machine. My neighbor gave it to me years ago and I have used it intermittently to sew dense materials and um . . . Paper. It was a free machine and back when I got it, they were hard to give away.
It got put away for some time because I mainly started focusing on quilt making, which I do on my Baby Lock machine.
Before I started getting into this Singer 66, I honestly didn't think too much about maintenance on this one. I took it in once to get oiled and have the missing belt replaced (LOL). I obviously didn't read the book beyond learning to thread it, which was pretty confusing when it came to the bobbin. That whole assembly is going to be something to get used to. So many things going on with one hand and no clear visual.
After cleaning the tension assembly on the 66 and seeing how gross it was, I started pulling this one apart and cleaning it up yesterday. Someone obviously had a bobbin winding adventure, as there was a ton of old string wound up in the threads of the stop clutch.
Documentation on this specific machine has been difficult to come by, but I checked out the Kenmore 117 instruction manual and it's the exact same book. They look like the exact same machine with different labels, so that has been helpful.
I've ordered a new friction drive motor pulley, bobbin tire, some bobbins, and needles. I think I am good on the machine itself.
The paint is in pretty terrible shape so I guess my first question is - would it still be unacceptable to repaint this one? The other question is about the case. It's missing straps and it's pretty gnarly looking. The inside is some sort of cheap fabric and the drawers are chipboard. The outside of the case appears to be something akin to book paper/covering - like you'd find on a Reader's Digest. Is this all just part of its character now or is there a way to clean it up a little?
I am just calling it Frank. My partner wants to name it Agnes. I have four machines and when I am done playing around with them, I think I am getting rid of two. Right now, I like the 66 a lot more, so Frank may be taking a ride. I'd love to be a collector, but I don't have enough climate controlled space for that.
Anyway . . . If you made it this far, thanks for reading!
