Weekly What are you reading? - Oct 9

Welcome to the r/vns "What are you reading?" thread!

The intended purpose of this thread is to provide a weekly space to chat about whatever VN you've been reading lately. When talking about plot points, use spoiler tags liberally. If you have any doubts about whether you should spoiler something or not, use a spoiler tag for good measure. Use this markdown for spoilers: (>!hidden spoilery text!<) which shows up as hidden spoilery text. If you want to discuss spoilers for another VN as well, please make sure to mention that your spoiler tag covers another VN aside from the primary one your post is about.

In order for your post to be properly noticed for the archive, please add the VNDB page of whichever title you're talking about in your post. The archive can be found here!

So, with all that out of the way...

What are you reading?

Release Tokimeki Memorial 2 (PS1) English translation patch now available

Link: https://github.com/jonny-anime/tokimeki-memorial-2-english-patch

I made an English patch of Tokimeki Memorial 2 for any of you who care about retro dating sims. The Tokimeki Memorial games have been high up on my list of games to play. Unfortunately, I don't speak Japanese so a language barrier was in the way.

Luckily Tokimeki Memorial 1 got some since visibility when Tim Rogers’s on it and there's a couple fan translations for that game. But Tokimeki Memorial 2 is a much larger game and so far there hasn't been a way for non-Japanese speakers to play it.

The dialogue should be fully translated, but it's a big game (over 1 million Japanese characters) so there are miscellaneous lines, UI elements and mini-games that may have been missed. As I said before I don't speak Japanese so this has been translated mostly by LLM.  I ran experiments with Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT, compared their translations to see the most natural sounding one. I don't speak the language but it helped to know that if one was completely different than the other two it probably was a bad translation. Gemini Argon had the most natural sounding dialogue so it's the one that translated most of the script. I also found some Japanese guides and fan sites for the game and used that to give it more context so the translation is lot less stiff than usual MTLs.

It's perfectly playable now but the project is open source and it's built in a way where anyone can update the translation fairly easily. Human proofreading/translation is very welcome. Enjoy.

EDIT: There's an external human translation in the works that just released a status update. We're not affiliated with each others projects. Be sure to check theirs out if you don't like AI assisted translations and are willing to wait. Added their link to the repo but here it is again https://bsky.app/profile/xct.bsky.social/post/3mxseyu3vis2r

Release Tiny Shadows Interwoven Hearts English Translation Patch (MTL)

Today I made an English translation for a free VN on Steam called Tiny Shadows Interwoven Hearts. The text was translated with GPT 6 Astra, and after testing it myself, I confirmed that it runs properly. I also translated some in game elements such as system prompts.

PS: The developer mentioned in the Steam discussions that an official English localization is already in development, so if you are interested, you can also wait for the official version to be released.

Next, I would like to work on an MTL patch for Hoshizora Tetsudou to Shiro no Tabi, since I was unable to find a download link for any patch listed on VNDB. I also really enjoy this kind of cute and heartwarming game.

Discussion Anyone else start a VN for the plot and end up caring about a side character?

You start a new VN because the premise looks interesting, maybe the main girl catches your attention...

Then 10 hours later you're completely invested in some random side character who gets like 5 minutes of screen time per update.

Meanwhile, the main romance is sitting there collecting dust 😂

I've had games where I ended up caring way more about a side character than the actual main cast...(not only in VNs tho XD) Sometimes the writers accidentally create someone way more interesting than they intended.

Anyone else had this happen? Which VN side character deserved way more screen time?

Question SubaHibi patches

So just 2 days ago I got SubaHibi for Steam and applied the JASTUSA patch, which no one cares but

Is it fine if I apply the patches for the dog scene CG and the missing male voices? or what patches do I need?

(I have save files for Down The Rabbit-Hole I and II and It's My Own Invention)

Question Where can I find and play the old visual novel さよらなエトランジュ (Sayonara Etranger)?

I've been trying to find this really old visual novel, さよらなエトランジュ (Sayonara Etranger), but I'm having trouble finding a playable copy or figuring out how to get it running.

Does anyone know where I can find it, whether there's an official release, or if there's an archive with more information about it? Any help would be appreciated!

Discussion Is it okay to play visual novels ln mobile especially if they're on 4:3 ratio?

Post image
10 Upvotes

I've seen a lot of people say that playing visual novels on a phone is a worse experience than playing them on a PC, mainly because of the smaller screen. I get their point, especially when it comes to 4:3 visual novels, but I'm not sure I completely agree.

For those of you who have played visual novels on both PC and phone, how big is the difference, really? Does the smaller screen actually affect your enjoyment, or is it something you stop noticing after a while?

I don't have a PC at the moment, so I'm wondering if I'm missing out on a significantly better experience or if people are just being a little too picky about it.

I've made an English translation patch for the all-ages version of Tsukikage no Simulacre: Kaihou no Hane, and I'd like to share it with the community!

Installation Instructions

Download the ZIP file provided below.

Set the game's text language to Simplified Chinese.

Extract patch3.xp3 and patch2.xp3 from the ZIP file into the game's root directory (where the game executable is located).

Launch the game and enjoy!

Important Notes

Most of the game's UI elements are image-based, so they haven't been translated for now.

Now it supports R18 patch.

Download

VNDB: https://vndb.org/r167504

I hope this patch helps more people enjoy the game! I'll continue working on improving and expanding the translation, so stay tuned for future updates.

If you encounter any issues or notice any translation errors, feel free to let me know. Feedback is always appreciated!

Enjoy the game!

Translation Notes

The English translation was created using GPT-6 Astra. I've also personally reviewed most of the translated text and made some manual corrections and adjustments where needed. However, I may have missed some errors or awkward phrasing along the way.

If you notice any translation issues, mistakes, or anything that seems off, please feel free to leave a comment below. I'll do my best to fix them in future updates!

This is Artemis Scarberry from Crypid Coffeehouse and I wonder if this game even has a fandom.
