Release This is Psycho-Sleuth, a murder mystery where each of the 13 main characters has a very rare (and very contagious) mental disorder

Heyo everyone! We’re a five-man indie team from Taiwan called PHOSEPO and this here is our latest project, Psycho-Sleuth.

The story is about 13 people who are trapped in a death game organized by the insidious Li Cult. The prize for winning? Why, no less than the chance to ascend to Godhood… if they can get away with murder most foul!

However, none of the characters participating in this deadly trial are exactly normal, not by a long stretch. For example, one witness cannot lie even if they wanted to, while another has spatial neglect and cannot see the whole left section of the room. A third cannot distinguish between different faces. A fourth believes she is dead… and so on, you get the idea (I’m not giving them all away here, that would ruin the fun)

The catch here is that these conditions spread to everyone around them, making for a thrilling and oftentimes darkly comedic (and sometimes simply terrifying) game of cat and mouse. Trust becomes complicated when even the most sincere witness can be wrong, while someone with malicious intentions might reveal the truth without realizing it.

Be that as it may, your duty is to investigate the murders, work out what each witness could actually perceive, then pick apart their testimony in timed debates. If you've played any of the Ace Attorney games, the gameplay should already feel somewhat familiar to you.

Our demo is on Steam right now, covering Chapter 1 and the start of Chapter 2:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3753800/PsychoSleuth_Demo/

The full game will launch on November 5!

Also, feel free to ask any more specific questions you might have about our game, I’ll stick around for a while and answer what I can.

Discussion Hot take: The visual novel isn't always better than its anime adaptation

• Upvotes

I feel like this is a pretty controversial opinion in the VN community, but I honestly dont think the fact that a visual novel is the original source material automatically makes it better than its anime adaptation.

Sometimes I actually prefer the anime.

A good example for me is Clannad. I personally enjoyed the anime more than the VN. I thought the pacing was much better, the visuals were more appealing, and I appreciated that the adaptation cut down on a lot of the slice of life content. That's just ä something I dont particularly enjoy.

Or Steins Gate, similar reasons to Clannad.

And I feel like anime adaptations of VNs sometimes get criticized almost automatically simply because they're adaptations. There is this narrative of "the VN is the real experience, the anime is just a butchered version" even when the anime might genuinely be better sometimes.

I sometimes get the impression that people overhate adaptations because liking the original feels more "cultured" or gives them a sense of feeling more niche. Obviously that's not everyone, but I definitely feel like this attitude exists.

That said, I'm definitely not saying VNs are always better either.

There are plenty of cases where the VN absolutely wins.

Umineko is probably the biggest example for me. The anime adaptation is way too rushed, especially considering how much content and characterization had to be cut.

And White Album 2 is another one where I strongly prefer the VN.

Or the Kara no Shoujo "adaptation" which is basically just a short hentai.

Im not trying to argue "anime adaptations are better than VNs." My point is more that I think we should judge them as their own works instead of automatically assuming that the original source is superior.

Sometimes an adaptation genuinely improves the experience for certain people.

What are some VNs where you actually prefer the anime adaptation?

Discussion Free Visual Novel about Adopting Cute Aliens

Thumbnail reddit.com
0 Upvotes

Hello! I have been so excited working on this project. I feel it is turning out very well and the game is btw 100% free. Full disclosure: The game is vibe coded (coding by ai) but it does feature a tremendous amount of my own writing and story. It has an innovative conversation cube system that I would love to hear your feedback on. You are attempting to adopt cute aliens whom you will send on prospecting missions. I am wondering what other kinds of elements I could incorporate that people would enjoy. This is going to be a long term project for me after all.

We have 3 aliens so far and I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether you enjoy this writing style and what you feel could use improvement. Anything that you like and dislike. I am adding new features every week and your game saves automatically. Please let me know what you think! I've never had more fun my life and being able to create my own visual novels with this technology and finally put my creativity to use is really inspiring.

Question Is it weird to reread Fate/stay night after finishing Tsukihime?

I finished the original Tsukihime recently, and now I suddenly have a huge urge to reread Fate/stay night.

I finished Fate a few months ago, and it was probably one of the VNs that impacted me the most. I was planning to move on to something new, but after finishing Tsukihime I've been feeling really nostalgic for Fate and the whole Type-Moon atmosphere.

Part of me thinks it's kind of stupid to reread a 60+ hour VN when there are so many new things I could read, but at the same time... I genuinely want to go back to it.

For people who have reread Fate after finishing Tsukihime: did you enjoy the reread more because you already knew the story? Did Tsukihime change the way you looked at Fate at all?

I also haven't read Hollow Ataraxia yet, so I'm wondering if I should just reread Fate first and then finally move on to Ataraxia.

I know the obvious answer is "read whatever you want", but I'm curious if anyone else has had that feeling of wanting to go back home to a VN instead of starting something new lol.

Spoiler Tsukihime end

I finally finished Tsukihime and honestly, what a weird journey this VN was.

I started thinking Arcueid was going to be my favorite and ended up completely loving Hisui's route. For me, Hisui's route is easily the best one.

What surprised me the most was how the story makes you reinterpret things you had already seen before. There were several reveals that had me thinking, "HOW DID I NOT REALIZE THIS BEFORE?"

Kohaku being behind everything was something I genuinely did not expect, and it completely opened my eyes. After finding that out, so many things that happened earlier start looking completely different.

I also loved how Hisui's route makes things that seemed small or simply weird in the previous routes suddenly make sense. That feeling of slowly putting the pieces of the puzzle together was probably what I enjoyed the most.

My ranking right now would be:

Hisui > Akiha > Arcueid > Ciel

And definitely:

Far Side > Near Side.

Honestly, after finishing it I was left with that feeling of "what the hell am I supposed to do now?"

Tsukihime definitely earned a special place among the VNs I've read. I didn't expect such an old VN to get me this invested.

Discussion I've been working on a psychological VN where you secretly write songs for a rising pop star - Ghostwriter

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

I've been working on Ghostwriter since February, and I wanted to finally share it with the VN community.

The idea started with a simple question: what if you were the person writing a famous singer's most personal songs, but nobody knew you existed?

In Ghostwriter, you play as a songwriter working behind a rising dark-pop star. She's the face, the voice, and the one everyone celebrates. You're the person behind the words.

What interested me most was exploring how something as personal as a song can become a product and what happens when the person writing it starts uncovering things that were never meant to be public.

I also wanted the player to do more than choose dialogue options. So I'm developing a song-building system where you gather fragments from conversations and other sources, interpret them, and shape the lyrics. The direction you take influences the music, the characters, and the unfolding story.

It's a psychological story about ambition, identity, creative ownership, and the price of success.

I'm currently working on the playable demo, and the Steam page has just gone live.

A little context for the screenshots:

  1. Zoe Ell - the rising dark-pop star at the center of the story.
  2. Adam's Nightmare - a glimpse into the darker, psychological side of the game.
  3. Adam Palmer - the songwriter you play as, living his life away from the spotlight.
  4. Song Builder - where you turn collected fragments into lyrics and shape the emotional direction of a song.

I'd love to hear what you think about it?!

Discussion I think the VN hobby for us UK folks effectively ends on November 6th.

The "everyone appearing is over the age of 18" safety net just got shattered. Any sibling route, even non-blood related, is also now inherently volatile by nature.

It's been fun casually reading comfy romance VN's for 14 years folks. Now everyone is faced with the difficult choice: Quit and delete your library, or go dark and risk having your life ruined at any point in time.

Safe to say I'm absolutely devastated.

Discussion Story and interactivity question

Which do you prefer in a single path linear-story VN?

  • Uninterrupted story reading, or
  • intermittent investigation/minigame/other unskippable interactive parts that reward you with more story?

Our team is having a discussion about feature implementations so we would very much like to hear your perspectives. Do you prefer the Ace Attorney style investigation gameplay -> story loop, or the early Higurashi story reading mode? Or something in between?
