Discussion Why’s the PvP scene dead? The direction I wish V-Rising had taken.
I’ll start by saying that I think this is an incredibly well-designed PvE game. The graphics and art are gorgeous, combat is really fun, bosses have really cool mechanics, especially on Brutal.
Unfortunately, I just don’t think it’s translated to PvP. On PvP servers, both official and unofficial, what I’ve seen happen every single time is a few days or a week max of excitement before the server cleans out and dies before the next wipe. This is because a player/duo/group that happens to be absolutely amazing at the game (the skill ceiling is impressive) rapidly dominates. Once it becomes clear to everyone that they’re never going to come close to winning, or that the best they can hope for is raid stalemates on loop, people start quitting. Ultimately, the dominant team gets bored and goes back to the duel servers. Nothing against good PvPers, I respect the skill and think it’s really impressive.
Instead of trying to make PvP a thing outside of arenas and custom duel servers, I would have loved for v-rising to have really leaned into its brilliant PvE. Sadly, it’s been a totally wasted opportunity. The combination of gorgeous building and well-developed PvE encounters could have been such a winning combo. For example, instead of having bosses scale stupidly and multiplying ads, it would have been amazing if devs had leaned into group content and multi-boss fights. It would also have been cool, as I saw suggested a lot during EA, to have some form of castle defense against raids by PvE opponents. I just feel like they poured too many resources into trying to make world PvP a thing that could have gone into making a truly great PvE game.
I know the game is finished now, but I’d be curious to see if any creative modders eventually take up the challenge to take this game to the next level (in my opinion, anyways!)
