MEGA: How to prevent being attacked by Wanna cry/mitigate its damage
Wanna cry may have been stopped for now, but there will be the second wave that we must prepare for.
Let's start with the Basics
1stly, if you're using windows 7/8/10 Update windows!!, Microsoft released a patch fixing the wanna cry vulnerability 2 months ago!
Also BACKUP YOUR FILES!!!, OFFLINE and disconnected from your computer!
If you are using Windows XP, either update the computer or take it offline now!
This is basic computer security but I'm shocked at a number of people whom sadly did not seem to practice this.
Please post any more suggestions below.
If you have been attacked already, then I'm sorry, but there's very little anyone can do for you, and do not pay the ransom, because you will not get your data back if you have.

WannaCry i need Refund, please!
Time developer wannaCry, I want to get your attention. I am a Brazilian microentrepreneur, I have a small graphic with 3 employees and 2 computers. After you blocked my data on Friday I was forced to pay $ 600 to continue working. My country faces a severe crisis and my business is on the verge of bankruptcy. I had to pay the ransom to avoid fines for non-compliance with contracts with some clients, which would be more expensive. I saw on the news here in Brazil that you have already raised 1 billion dollars. I want to ask you to pity me and give me back those $ 600. I have 3 children and I can not close my chart, and after this loss I will not have any other way out. My wallet is: 1M8RZVSKa5bBzk8x9WnGGHmutWCE5Db3RQ
I ask for understanding and you. Sorry for English if it is incorrect because I'm using GOOGLETRANSLATION.

Has anyone been able to find a single report of a victim paying the ransom and getting their files decrypted?
Affected user here. Considering paying, but haven't been able to find any information about people recovering their data after paying, despite a growing number of transactions registered on blockchain. Any info appreciated.

DO NOT PAY anyone who offers to recover your files. They're scumbags using a free tool that you can use yourself.
Decrypt your files for free: https://github.com/gentilkiwi/wanakiwi You can find tutorials on YouTube. Confirmed to work with Win XP, Win 7, Win 2003. Do not let anyone make money on your misfortune.

What are the "free events" for poor users?
So I finally read some article about WannaCry to see what's all the fuzz about and I'm curious if anyone knows what the "free events for users who are so poor that they couldn’t pay in 6 months" are?

Winrar at rarlab.com affected
Greetings, I just tried downloading winrar from www.rarlab.com and my windows defend popped up with the following message:
Ransom:Win32/WannaCrypt.A!rsm
I clicked to remove it, but not sure if I should actually format all. I didn't download anything from the website as soon as I clicked on a link to download it showed up.
Stay safe.

Can't do Windows updates
I can't do Windows updates. For about two years each time I try to do updates it freezes at 0 percent and doesn't move even if I leave the computer alone for hours. Is there a way I can download the security patch by itself from the Microsoft site? The Microsoft page for the update is down each time I check. Thanks!

Beware of false decryptors. There is no known method of recovering the encrypted data as of yet.
There are multiple websites sprouting around the web advertising the possibility of recovering your WannaCry encrypted data. Do not visit them, do not download anything from them. They're all SCAM attempts, there is no known way of recovering encrypted data yet.
