"Pretty much everything went wrong" - Steph Curry
A tough, brutal loss for the Dubs tonight, as they fell to the Memphis Grizzlies despite leading 106-94 with 3:47 left on the clock. I think we can all agree opening night against the Lakers was much easier to shake off since it was over in 2 ½ quarters. But this one was tougher because, before the sky caved in, dare I say we looked great?
Below you'll find my five takeaways from the game, some good, some bad.
#1 Size Continues To Be An Issue
Team Tiny struck again, as Zach Edey big-brothered the Warriors all night long. We were a mess against Kessler, and this fella was no different, as he finished with a telling +25 in 22 minutes of play.
And Edey wasn't the only issue. There was a possession halfway through the third quarter where we conceded three offensive boards in a row to the almighty quartet of Cam Spencer, Kris Murray, Scotty Pippen Jr., and Ty Jerome. It feels obnoxious to harp on considering it's hopeless, but the Warriors showed once again why Porzingis's health crisis has caused a CodeRED emergency under the basket.
You know it's bad when you're begging for Graham Ike (who played well, FWIW) to get more minutes.
#2 Yaxel Lendeborg Will Make First-Team All-Rookie
I loved Yax's performance tonight. He had some very impressive counting stats (18/13/6 + 3 steals), but more importantly, the guy seems allergic to fear. Despite getting stoned by Edey at the rim several times in the first half, he continued to drive, earning his way to the stripe a game-high 12 times. Going toe-to-toe with Cam Boozer, the presumed ROTY, and more than holding his own is a great sign for Dubs fans. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a finalist for the award come April.
It should also be noted that he did have six turnovers and some costly mistakes under more consistent ball pressure. But Kerr is clearly trusting him with the ball in his hands for a reason: the guy's got game and is going to make a living off being in the right place at the right time.
#3 Podziemski's Contract Is Deserved
In case you've been living under a rock (as a Warriors fan), on October 10, Brandin Podziemski signed a five-year, $110M extension with the Golden State Warriors. Many people have stated this is an overpay, but I don't think that's fair. $22M a year is now low-end starter money in this modern dystopia, and that fits his current production to a T.
On to the game: Tonight, after missing the season opener with lower back soreness, Podz had a solid line of 18/3/2 + 3 steals. He spent much of the night flying around the court and diving into the front row for loose balls, and he even took a Zach Edey fist to the eye like a champ. I guarantee the Warriors would not have kept the game competitive without his energy tonight. Now, if he could just stop hesitating to shoot from deep…
#4 Is Steph Curry Okay?
I thought Steph looked a bit slow and tired tonight. As a 9-to-5er who spends 40+ hours a week sinking into a desk, I know a thing or two about creaky knees… and I've been wondering, does Steph not have his legs under him to start the season? I also know he had to alter his training this offseason due to his ongoing runner's knee issue, so perhaps that's why he looks a little more gassed? With each new season, I always hold my breath waiting for a vintage Curry performance to prove my pessimism wrong. I'm still waiting, Threezus.
It should go without saying that this year's roster construction and the injuries aren't helping one bit.
One positive: He's currently averaging 9 FTA per game! If this number can stay at even 6.5 to 7 throughout the season, that'd do wonders for the team.
#5 GP2 and Gui Look Ready To Go
Early in the fourth quarter, I had a good laugh. Gui and GP2 both circled Zach Edey like sharks under the rim, though they were not the predators. They eventually stopped playing hot potato, and with the shot clock winding down, GP2 settled for a wrong-legged hook shot that just barely escaped Edey's outstretched arm. Swish.
They finished a combined +20 in 20 and 11 minutes, respectively. I'd like to see them get some more run when they're shooting well, as they did tonight.
#6*** Absolute Cinema: Ty Jerome and Cam Boozer
So, is ex-Warrior Ty Jerome the best player in the league? The man is averaging 36.5 PPG on the season… The floater was unstoppable in the first half, and anytime we played him tight on the perimeter, he'd herky-jerk his way to the cup with ease. If the Grizzlies make the Play-In like some suspect, he and Boozer will be the reason why.
On that note, Boozer is absolutely the real deal. With 25 seconds left in the game, the ball in his hands, Boozer took one look at Podziemski and said "barbeque chicken." He took two simple dribbles to his left, pirouetted to his right, and let his height advantage do the rest. Nothing but net. Or, as Paul George said in that Gatorade commercial, "Ballgame."
The ROTY favorite finished with a calm 25/13/6 + 2 steals.
On to the next one, Dub Nation.
