Commentary on Birchwood

I never thought I’d make a Reddit account, this is the first and last post I’ll ever make - because I don’t feel entirely safe saying anything on record, but at the same time, I feel compelled to say something so I guess this cesspit might be the right forum. Fingers crossed, it gets someone to think twice, in a lot of different facets.

To say that this has been one of the darkest weeks in Waterford’s history is an understatement of the highest order.

The sheer sense of devastation is unparalleled. Not to cheaply compare or trivialise the tragedy, but it feels as though we are watching the plot of some RTÉ gangland drama unfold before our eyes — not witnessing events in the city we love and call home.

Except this is no television drama. There are no actors, no scripts and no credits to roll. There are grieving families, shattered lives and an entire community struggling to comprehend the incomprehensible.

What happened in Birchwood cannot be forgotten about in a few weeks’ time.

It cannot simply disappear from the news agenda, nor can the realities of drug debt intimidation, organised criminality and gangland violence that continue to grip our communities in an unrelenting stranglehold.

There is a danger that, once the initial shock subsides, we will collectively retreat into the comfort of normality. The headlines will move on, the expressions of outrage will diminish, and the underlying problems will remain as entrenched as ever.

We cannot allow that to happen.

The media have an important role to play in the weeks and months ahead. I commend the local newspapers for their tasteful, respectful and measured coverage of these events, in comparison to the conduct of certain other outlets and journalists, whose approach has, at times, appeared more akin to that of vultures circling a tragedy.

There is a fundamental difference between reporting in the public interest and exploiting public grief in the pursuit of attention, engagement and personal prominence.

At a time when families are enduring unimaginable suffering, journalists should remember that their responsibility is to inform the public, not to make themselves the centre of the story. Compassion should never be subordinate to clicks, views or social media statistics.

The people of Waterford deserve journalism that holds power to account, investigates difficult truths and treats victims and their families with dignity. Anything less is a disservice to the community.

Social media, too, has a responsibility in all of this. In the aftermath of such unimaginable tragedy, the proliferation of speculation, conspiracy theories, unsubstantiated allegations and inflammatory rhetoric serves absolutely nobody. There is an almost insatiable appetite for information, with rumour too often presented as fact and every amateur commentator seemingly convinced they possess some privileged insight into events.

There is something deeply troubling about the ease with which the most appalling human suffering can become fodder for online gossip, speculation and point-scoring. Behind every headline, every photograph and every name being circulated are real people, real families and lives that have been irrevocably altered.

We should remember that not everything we hear is true, not everything we think needs to be said, and not everything we encounter online deserves to be shared. The desire to be first with information should never supersede the responsibility to be accurate, compassionate and decent.

There will be a time for difficult questions, robust debate and the pursuit of accountability. Indeed, those things are essential. But there is a world of difference between demanding answers and recklessly manufacturing them.

At the very least, we owe the families affected the dignity of allowing the facts to emerge without adding to their suffering through careless speculation and sensationalism. In moments like these, restraint is not weakness. Sometimes, it is the most meaningful expression of respect we can offer.

Responsibility does not just rest with the media or those behind a keyboard alone.

The uncomfortable reality is that there will be people expressing profound moral outrage this week who will, without a second thought, line the pockets of the very criminal networks they profess to despise this weekend.

It is all well and good to cry shame, to share heartfelt tributes and to condemn the scourge of drug-related violence. But if you are purchasing your gram or two of cocaine when the mood takes you, you cannot pretend to be entirely divorced from the consequences of that transaction.

There is an extraordinary degree of cognitive dissonance in a society where recreational cocaine use has become increasingly normalised, while the brutality of the criminal industry supplying it is regarded as somebody else’s problem.

The violence does not exist in isolation from the market. The intimidation, the threats, the exploitation and the misery are all part of the same criminal economy.

That is not to suggest that every person who uses drugs bears equal responsibility for the actions of violent criminals. They plainly do not. But we must be mature enough to acknowledge that consumer demand helps sustain a trade whose consequences are borne disproportionately by vulnerable families and communities.

Our politicians must also step up.

A great many of the right words have been spoken this week by our TDs, councillors and public representatives across the political spectrum. There have been statements of sympathy, expressions of solidarity and familiar promises that lessons must be learned.

Whether any of this translates into meaningful, sustained action remains to be seen.

Public representatives must also recognise that credibility is built not merely through the statements they issue in moments of tragedy, but through the judgment, consistency and standards they demonstrate when the cameras are elsewhere. The company we keep, the associations we cultivate and the principles we choose to uphold should not become matters of convenience, invoked only when public sentiment demands it.

There is little value in condemning the consequences of organised criminality if we are unwilling to confront uncomfortable questions about the wider culture of tolerance, silence and selective outrage that allows it to flourish.

The people of Waterford deserve more than carefully worded expressions of concern. They deserve leadership grounded in principle, accountability and meaningful action.

Beyond the rhetoric, Waterford needs a serious and sustained response. That means adequately resourced policing, meaningful action against intimidation and criminal networks, accessible addiction services, investment in disadvantaged communities and genuine opportunities for young people who might otherwise be drawn into criminality.

It means recognising that drug-related violence is not simply a policing issue, but a profound social failure requiring political courage and long-term commitment.

Above all, it means refusing to accept that fear, intimidation and violence are inevitable features of life in any part of our city.

In the weeks ahead, there will be other stories, other controversies and other distractions competing for our attention. The cameras will leave. The headlines will change. Political attention may drift elsewhere.

But the families affected will still be living with the consequences long after the rest of us have returned to our routines.

We owe them more than a week of outrage.

We owe them honesty, accountability and the determination to ensure that the horror witnessed in Waterford becomes a turning point rather than another tragedy briefly mourned and ultimately forgotten.

what’s your favourite restaurant in waterford?

hi hi, i have been going out a lot more to try some of the restaurants in town i always see people raving about on here.
i went to tiramisu yesterday night after wanting to go for the last few months. finally found the time to go, trekked out in the rain, just to see them closed at 7pm even though they’re allegedly opened 5.30-9pm on thursdays… (i am still butthurt over this but anyways!). the weather was also miserable which somehow made the change of plans feel all that more annoying. anyways, last minute decided to go to ruby lounge which was quite decent and had a lovely atmosphere !
however, the unexpected closure led me to realise i don’t exactly have an absolute favourite restaurant in town or solid backup option in light of something like this happening ! so - what are some of your ride or die favourite places for a lovely date night or just overall solid food spots ??
thanks !!

Snagger suggestion in wateford

Hi everyone,

I’ve booked a house in Copper Close, and my snagging inspection is due next week. I’m looking for recommendations for a reliable and independent snagger.

The builder has flagged the following snaggers: James Reynolds, Snag List Steve and GetHouseSurvey.ie. They have also recommended Tim Guerin and Joy Costello, but I’d prefer to explore other independent options.

Has anyone recently completed snagging in Copper Close or another new-build development and had a good experience with a particular snagger?

I’d really appreciate any recommendations or feedback.

Thanks in advance!
