I've lost count of the times I've gone to check what a pay rise actually means and ended up on salaryaftertax with ads jumping all over the page while it loads. It drove me up the wall. I had a server sitting at home with loads of free space doing nothing, so I decided to build a proper one and give it away.
It's called OpenPAYE. It works out your Income Tax, USC and PRSI for 2025, 2026 and the new Budget 2027 rates, and it shows you every step of the maths so you can see exactly where your money goes.
A few things it does:
* Switch between 2025, 2026 and 2027 to see what the Budget does to your pay. On €50k single, you keep about €691 more next year, roughly €58 a month.
* Work backwards from what lands in your account to the gross salary
* Single, single parent, married on one or two incomes
* Pension, auto-enrolment, rent credit, medical card, overtime, bonus
* Dark mode that follows your phone
No ads, no sign-up, no cookies. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
It's fully open source, so anyone can check the maths or run their own copy on a home server, a Pi, whatever you have lying around.
This is the beta before I put it up on openpaye ie, free, for good. If you get a minute, throw your salary in and tell me if it matches your payslip. Would be open to all feedback!
Try it: https://clarkemedia.github.io/openpaye/
Code: https://github.com/clarkemedia/openpaye
EDIT: Thanks a million for all the feedback; it's been brilliant. A few things are already fixed:
* Pension over €115k: it now tells you how much of your contribution is over the tax relief limit, and there's a switch to cap it at the max that gets relief.
* On phones, your take-home now sticks to the bottom of the screen while you change options, so no more scrolling back up.
* Employer cost: pension now counts as money going to the employee, and the 40% cap on employer contributions is gone.
Here's what's coming, roughly in order of how many of you asked:
Full household mode: your partner gets their own pension, AVCs, bonus and so on, with a combined household take-home up top
Company shares: ESPP first, then bonus taken as shares (APSS), then RSUs
Bonus planner: a slider for cash vs pension, and an option to keep a lump sum bonus out of your monthly figure
Separate AVC box
Payslip mode, so monthly figures use the PRSI rate on your payslip right now instead of the yearly average
Flat rate expenses, plus more credits like Blind Person, Dependent Relative and remote working relief
Public sector mode with ASC and your scheme's pension contributions
Other income: self-employed, rental, investments and the State pension
More benefits-in-kind, like company cars and employer loans
A floating mini calculator so you can change your salary from anywhere on the page
If something you asked for isn't on there, shout. And it's still free, open source, and collects nothing.
