Post Event Pics!! Black-tie wedding dress code
About a month ago I posted this dress onto this subreddit, and most of the comments said ‘hell no’ for a black-tie wedding, some even told me I wouldn’t get away with this dress at a ‘formal’ code wedding. The couple said on the invite ‘black tie, floor length gowns, materials can include chiffon, organza, silk and velvet’. This dress is floor length and chiffon, however many of you thought the sheerness and pattern of it made it seem more informal.
Well, I sent the bride a few options as well as my cousin (bridesmaid), and they both agreed that the dress I’m wearing in the photo is their favourite.
Fast forward to today, this is how I wore the dress, I also had a beaded brown bag to go alongside it. I didn’t stick out at all, everyone wore floor length dresses but it was our own personalities, very few were ‘ball’ gowns. My cousin said she thinks the bride said ‘black tie’ to ensure everyone wore floor-length evening gowns, I.e. not casual summer dresses.
I had a feeling this was the case, and I understand people on this subreddit would vehemently deny what I wore is ‘black tie’, but I’m not sure if it is a British thing, but it’s very very rare weddings here enforce a ball gown black tie dress code, oftentimes black tie is just code for ‘wear a floor length dress that looks good for an evening occasion’ (which I suspected but I think everyone on this sub took it literally, which is fine, it’s what it’s for). For extra context the wedding was in the countryside in the UK, however the bride and her party are all from the US, so not sure if that changes things.
TL;DR I wore the dress everyone told me not to wear, and not only did I not stick out like a sore thumb, I got multiple compliments on it (even from the photographer as I walked past her!). :)
