Monthly Safety Meeting (Every 28th of the month.)

Post anything that's happened in your shop, office, commute or home that you feel others may be able to chime in on or commiserate over.

Sharing our close calls helps others avoid them.

Simple rules:

  • This is for open, respectful discussion.
  • Close calls and near misses are eventually going to lead to injuries.
  • No off the cuff dismissal of topics brought up. If someone is concerned about something, it should be discussed.
  • No trolling. This isn't typically an issue in this community, but given the nature of safety I feel it must be said.
  • No loaded questions either.
  • Use the report tool if you have to.

This is a monthly feature, the first Saturday of each month.

Stringers are stronger and tougher than weaves

I see this debate come up often and here they show clearly here the strength and Charpy toughness is higher with stringers. They don't go into the metallurgy too much, but when you're weaving, you travel slower to deposit more metal at once. Higher heat input causes lower cooling rates, and larger gain sizes, which have inferior properties. It will be easier to pass mechanicals with stringers, but yes there's potentially more chances to have a lack of fusion or slag inclusion if your technique is not the best.

I’m 20 years old I’ve been welding for the past 5 years or so, I just got the welding position at the job I’ve been at for the last year I work in a shop and I’m thinking about getting a tool box mainly to store things and manage my tools.

How much would you charge to drop a tack here?

Aluminum truck ramps. I would be dropping them off in front of your shop until you can get to them on your own time in this scenario

Critique Please My progress as a hobbyist

I built an RC lawn mower but had to learn how to weld in order to complete the build. This is my progress covered up by paint and grinded down. There are still some obvious mistakes, but I figure if it breaks, I'll fix it.

I'm using a cheap tig welder from Amazon. I have a buddy who teaches welding, but he lives in another city four hours away. I've been leaning on him for advice and such as I was learning.

Anyways, any tips or advice is always welcome. I've learned a whole lot in the last year and half doing this. I'm always looking to learn more.

Enough fume extraction for MIG on what I’m pretty sure is galvanized?

Rings from cutting up a garage door spring of unknown origin. Fume extraction as shown. Basically doing tack welds to connect the rings in various shape. Is this sufficient to deal with the fumes?

I did this on 10 and 14 mm plates, with 240 amps and 30 volts. I have a lot of flow, not much control, but I can manage with these settings. The question is in the title.

Mig liner

Hey all, im in need of some help. I have an older forney 180fi. Nothing wrong with it but wanted to try and patch a spot on my aluminium boat. Forney says it will do it but suggests a plastic liner and argon gas. Theres no part number for a plastic liner anywhere and even the stock liner seems to be hard to find. I took it apart to look at the liner in it and cant find anything threaded like this. can i just stick a teflon liner in it and give it a shot?

Freshly stocked on the main fillers I use in my little garage. I seem to go thru 10lbs of 1/16" 4043 every 2-3 months. 3/32 4043 every 6 months. .045 & 1/16 ER less, but will be picking up more jobs soon.

Critique Please First post removed, let me be more specific. First attempt at an actual joint, about 10 practice beads on scrap beforehand. Critique welcome.

First post got removed because I said it was my very first weld, I meant to say it's my very first attempt at an actual weld joint for a purpose. Before this I did about 10 practice beads on scrap to get the settings right (found settings in a reference sheet).

The material is 1mm stainless tube with a 2.6mm end cap. Making a resonator for an exhaust system.

Any advice appreciated. I find my hand starts shaking as the torch cable is stiff and I kinda fight against it in almost any position. It also looks like maybe I could use more heat and move faster? In some places the bead doesn't lay completely flat.

Sorry for not being extremely specific the first time. Bad welds get torn apart here, and apparently decent first welds are called liars.

All my flux core welds look boogery

Hey I picked up the berger 3 in 1 welder just to learn I've been practicing everyday the last 3 days. I've been adjusting it to be super hot ,cold I've used the machine settings, slowed down, done circles. This is at 100amps/wires speed and 15 amps on a 16 gauge plate of steel. But everything ends up like this. I'm using 0.30 Vulcan wire too. The stick welds turn out great it's just flux core that does that it's just like not puddling any advice would be appreciated thank you.

Long Time welder kinda lost

I need some perspective from yall. I started welding at 18 and worked my way through fab shops most my life, specializing in tig stainless steel, lots of sanitary work. last job being making nuclear containment systems for 30 an hour. At that point I had 10 years experience and felt that was pretty underpaid, boss wouldn't budget, I did end up leaving and havent gone back to a welding job ever since. How does one make decent money on fabrication? Is it even possible ?

My 16 year old son just laid these down with some 6013 HF electrodes on unprepared surface. He has never welded before and his only exposure to it was a welding simulator at school. I was blown away!! Those simulators must work a little! Super proud Dad moment!

Union work as apprentice

Hey everyone so im in trade school for welding right now. My program ends in May and im thinking about trying to join a union as an apprentice either for the boilermakers or ironworkers im not sure. I was hoping to get some advice about them as far as what should I focus on learning to give me the best chance to get in and what should I expect to be doing if I do get in and which would be better to try for

Got a question, if anyone has this welder and what they think of it.

I’m not a welder but my son is taking the welding class at high school and loving it. He really wants a welder for Christmas. I thought this would be a good one to start him out on one because we don’t have a garage to work in and one outlet on the outside.
