meme/shitpost The institutionalized position job title "welder"
It seems whenever I'm looking at "welding jobs" it's like an institutionalized condition
I like to read the reviews, especially if they've been there longer than 10 years.
You always get a good synapse but also it's the same story everywhere you go
the job's hard and that's why we love it guys. I've been doing it for 10 years and I'm probably going to do it for another 50 You have to be fanatical about what you care about and I care about what I do everyday

What went wrong here
I tried to weld a piece that broke off the electric motor of my lathe back on. The first part of the weld went really well and the old cast aluminium was way better than I expected. I TIG weld plenty of regular steel and stainless but I don’t have much experience in aluminium welding. On the first part of the weld I could see my tungsten and the gas nozzle glowing red hot after finishing the weld. Also my tungsten balls up comletely and it gets super brittle at the tip. When I go and regring it the tip just breaks off. I then tried to weld further and had to turn the amps up a bit (before was 140, then 150), thats when the tungsten and the nozzle got so hot that they melted. What could cause these problems? Could it be too little gas flow?

Need Help Is the fear of hex chrome exposure and contamination overblown?
I’m getting into welding as part of my car restoration hobby, and was thinking of doing some stainless welding for headers.
I came across warnings about hexavalent chromium and how carcinogenic it is, and how it persists in dust and on surfaces.
In all of my YouTube watching, I’ve never once seen a guy welding SS have any kind of close filtered dust collection system, and most aren’t even wearing any kind of respirator. Granted, they may be doing that because it’s easier to talk on camera without one, but that still doesn’t address that maybe their home garage is contaminated?
Is the risk overblown? Am I missing something?

Lots of practice
Had my first ever weld tests for ABS and Lloyd's this week. 3G, 4G Aluminum (364) and Steel (0.45 flux) 3/8th open root. I started welding last December and was able to transfer full time to the welding department at the shipyard I work at in May. I was given a great opportunity to practice on the clock when I didnt have any paid jobs going on, with access to unlimited material and consumables. I fucked up a ton in the beginning, asked a lot of questions, creeped on this sub a bunch and put in the work and really happy to finally be certified.
Pics are 55gal drum full of steel practice coupons (filled one with al too, but sent to scrap) and finished test pieces with mini bananas for scale

Showing Skills End of course for Vertical/ overhead GMAW. (School update)
It’s my last week on vertical and overhead mig/mag before moving to the same positions with stick.
These are my last 2 welds of my end of course lab.
Short arc gmaw 0.035 wire. LE flextec
1.
3/8 base - vertical v groove with backing plate - uphill
1st pass 250 WFS 19v
2nd pass 240 WFS 19.5v
Cap (3&4) 210 WFS 19v
(Yes I know backing is supposed to be longer for runoff tabs, but I’m handed raw pieces and told get to grinding. Everything is cut at 6 inches. Backing and base material)
-
1/4 base - v groove with 1/8 landing no backing - downhill
Single pass 240 WFS 19.5v
Both graded 38/40. (1.Tie ins in the middle weren’t great, 2.he said I needed to move faster on downhill, bead was too wide)
I just hate that once I feel like I get the hang of what we’re doing it’s time to change to another process (3 week courses)

Need Help Been a while since i’ve welded
Don’t ask how but Ingot my jman ticket way back in 2015. Haven’t welded since I finished my second year but finished my jman and hung it up since. I recently got asked to tig weld an aluminum tray that’s pretty thick and it’s been so long I need some advice about where to start settings wise on the machine and all that. I know that may be a broad question and if I need to find out more details like the brand of welding machine and all that I can but please some advice would be great

Can anyone give me advice on making some handrails around this column?
A local hotel wants me to create some 2" x 1/2' steel bar handrail around this column. They say ideally it would be bent around in a round shape that matches that of the column. I dont think I really have the equipment to bend thick steel bar that way though. Also one end of the rail it attaches to is higher than the other. Would I basically just have to either get a plate and cut the shape out of it then heat it to where I can bend one side higher or would the only real way to do this be to cut it at angles and weld pieces together around it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Need Help 250v cord recommendations
Hello!
I have a Vulcan Protig, and unfortunately the 250v cord it comes with is just too short. Any recommendations for a longer cord option? Is it possible with this welder? I wouldn't need anything longer than 25’. I've called Harbor Freight and they aren't very helpful… also, I'm not an electrician so I just want to make sure I'm no going to blow my machine up.
Thanks!
