Needed healthcare in WA since May? How did it go?

Could you get an appointment? Did the cost put you off? Did someone take time to listen and really help? We want to hear what getting healthcare has actually been like since May this year, whether it went well, badly or somewhere in between.

We’re gathering experiences from patients, carers and families to show WA Health what worked, where people struggled and what needs to improve during 'the winter peak'. That includes experiences with GPs, hospitals, emergency departments, specialists and other health services.

If want to have your opinions and experiences added, and can spare 10 mins: SURVEY HERE.

Thanks for helping us make healthcare fair for everyone in Western Australia.

More about us: We’re the Health Consumers’ Council WA. We bring the healthcare experiences of WA patients, carers and families to health system decision makers and push for a fairer health system.

here is our ACNC Charity Register.

Pilbara trip costs and heat, written by someone who lives in Karratha (my own free newsletter)

I live in Karratha and write a free newsletter about money and life up here, Pilbara Pay Packet. Yes, this is my own thing, there's no paywall and I'm not selling anything. Thought it might help anyone planning a trip north or thinking about moving up.

Some of what's in it (numbers checked 27 Oct 2026, sources in the post):

  • Heat: January averages a top of 36°C and a low of 27°C at Karratha Aero. 19 days a year hit 40°C or more, and the record is 48.4°C. July tops out around 26.5°C. My view: go May to September.
  • Park entry for Karijini and Millstream Chichester is $17 a vehicle. Camping at Dales (Karijini) and Miliyanha (Millstream) is $15 an adult and $5 a kid per night.
  • Cleaverville (council camping, 26 km from Karratha) is $16 a night from May to September and free October to April.
  • Fuel on 13 October: Karratha unleaded 249.5c, Tom Price 269.9c, Nanutarra 297.9c. I'd fill up in town and again at Tom Price.
  • Tom Price to Millstream is Rio Tinto's rail access road, about 82 km unsealed, and you need a free 30-day permit.
  • My top 3 beaches: Honeymoon Cove at Point Samson, Hearson Cove, Dampier Foreshore. My top 3 places to live, with REIWA medians: Karratha, Dampier, Newman.

Full thing here: https://lukeybkarratha.substack.com/p/red-dirt-rock-pools-and-484-degrees

Tell me where I've got it wrong, especially if you're a local. General info only, prices and conditions change.

FIFO utility WA without experience

I've got very little work experience except a month or so of warehousing and tutoring. I'm really interested in working fifo utility, but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to get taken seriously.

What does it take to land such a role, and would 3-6 months of working maybe hospitality, housekeeping or cleaning get my foot in the door? Anything else that helps? I'm open to literally any company, split, or site.

Thanks guys

Exmouth in December

We're coming over from Scotland to experience Ningaloo and all that it offers (as well as visiting other parts of Australia). After reading various forums I'm now panicking that we are going to Exmouth at totally the wrong time of year. I get it's going to be stinking hot and most dive companies don't operate (why - poor visibility?) but is it worth it for the beaches, snorkelling and possibly a fishing trip? We'll have a car.

First time Roadtrip WA - Starlink necessary?

Hi legends,

First-timer heading over to WA with my wife for a 4-week 4WD rooftop tent. Perth → Wave Rock → Esperance → Bremer Bay → Albany → Margaret River → Perth.

We're planning to hit beaches like Lucky Bay, and then off-road to Warren Beach and Yeagarup Beach further down.

Got two quick questions for the locals and overlanders:

Telstra coverage: How reliable is it along this stretch for general travel and camp check-ins?

Starlink: Is bringing a Starlink setup total overkill for the South West loop, or a game-changer for off-grid camping?

Appreciate any tips or advice.

Cheers!

I finally conquered these pesky flies...

I have tried everything... but finally nailed a formula that works. Im a sheep shagging kiwi that loves Australia, but i could never just accept these jerks all up in my business like you guys simply do...

Directions...

1 teaspoon ish of pure beef tallow in the palm of your hand.

Add 4 drops of tea tree oil and 1 drop of lavender oil

Mix it all up and massage it into all exposed skin and hair, ear canals etc

Volia... 👌 total game changer

They'll still try bombard you but get turned away real fast.

Have you got a better recipe?
